and I wonder how long till these are perfected so they do not break often?

One of the biggest problems with newer cars is that one needs to hook up the computer to fix them. And the computer is not always correct. I had an intermittent problem with the car almost stalling out. I would be driving at 55 mph for a while (30 min, 2 hours+) slow down for a toll (didn't have to stop easy pass) hit the gas to go again. The engine rpms would drop to under 100. I usually took my foot off the gas then hit it again. Take it to the shop/dealer no error code == nothing wrong. I finally got an error code. The code was spark plug #4. They wanted to due a tune up. I just had a tune up ( a freaking good one with better stuff then stock). A second tune up later. It does it again. Again with spark plug number 4. Now they say the lower O rings are bad and need changing. These have been changed already (20k ago for a different issue ethanol gas killed the original ones). I asked that they make sure all the o rings are ethanol gas proof. A year later guess what the error code is, spark plug number 4. And they say it is the lower o rings again. I tell them the o rings have been changed twice now. They tried to talk me into yet another lower o ring replacement (they had started without my approval already) when I told them that they had done the repair last year they decided to check other thing besides the error code. The whole time the air mass sensor was going bad. One $200 repair cost me $3500 because the thing that was broken didn't throw a code. And the first spark plug in the firing order, number 4. Which was not getting the correct air-fuel mix and throwing the code.

So letting a computer control more of the car? Not until I have been convinced it works without failing. Which may be why we have yet to see these in regular cars.

We had a major failure of all systems one day. All the servers were up and running fine when we looked at them locally. The network went down, (not the database/web/file servers) the actual network blade thing. The network blades were working fine. We had communication on each blade, just not cross blades. We asked the network guys why they didn't have a backup plan. We had to have 5 sets of backups, (backup on site, backup off site local, backup off site within an hour, backup off site regional, backup off site far away). It was a pain to keep all the servers sync'd. The network guys were responsible for getting the 5 layer backup model approved by the board. Then their blade network thing went down.

I still think someone hacked into the blade and killed it. Cause all the hardware worked fine. The blade bios was cleared. (according to the network guys) And adding 5X to everything you wanted to do made getting things approved a lot harder. And to this day I do not like blade based servers/network components. The blade enclosure is the single point of failure.

Wheel chair access and your other examples have nothing to do with company abc's decision to stop offering a product or service. Should ms be forced to support xp for a while? Hell yes probably through 2010-2012 at least. A company can change what it is offering. Actually wouldn't ms action of not offering 98, 2000, and XP actually comply with the monopoly rulings? Those products were where the lock in happened. Can IE be uninstalled from vista? What API's are we talking about here?

    Exchange? file server? application server?

Application server: Talk to the people that made the application, not all the apps installed on the server are from ms. Not all application servers are ms based. The application writer/provider decides what platforms they are supporting.

File server: Shouldn't be an issue now and hasn't been for some time. We have had linux, *nix (sun, and something else I forget), and ms servers all letting ms, apple, and linux clients read and right to them for a few years now. (We didn't have the ms file server until a few years ago.) The biggest problem is people forgetting their password. Which is not a ms, apple, or problem though. The file servers store different things. The video files are on the apple server, and the regular doc files are on the ms and *nix ones. Depending on the user role, one may have access to all of them or just a few.

Exchange server: Don't get exchange. There are other choices. If the business decides to go with one all in one system, that is a decision for that company to make. People in that company use that software.
Email: there are a lot of email server choices.
Address book/contacts: again lots of choices that work with email and some that are stand alone.

The biggest thing about exchange I hear is calendar. If you have to share your calendar with the world, then use something everyone in the world can use. Personally I hate the exchange calendar. If you need to have a public calendar so everyone can see where/when you are all the time, then get a stand alone public calendar.

The more one software title does the more a pain it becomes. Software should do one thing well and consistently. You have 5 different programs to do 5 different things, fine. Email and scheduling (calendar) are two different things. They should be two different pieces of software.
