The Windows world won't go away, but let me tell you how great Chromebooks are in an education environment. We have about 1/3 of our fleet in Chromebooks and 2/3 in Windows 7 (no, I won't even consider 8 thank you). I spend several hours a month dealing with Chrome issues. I spend several hours a day on Windows issues. It becomes a simple math problem. Plus, if you really need a Windows program mainframe2 will launch soon. Run that thing in the cloud.......

x120e doesn't have an optical drive due to the size, and several different CPU/chipset configs. Changing the internal WiFi is dead simple. I've had middle school kids do it. Why you got a lockup? It's a mystery....... Not sure I would run linux on such a tiny (and frankly fragile) device. I have 240 x120/30/31's in my fleet. Never tried Linux on them. Got a couple getting new HDD's so now I have to try it. Damn you!

Not that it would have made the car great, but it was designed with a different motor. GM had a Wankel in development and DeLorean (and AMC in the Pacer) was going to use that. Sadly it never got out of development and JD went with the PRV V6 (not know for much of anything other than being in a lot of Volvos) DeLorean went with the "cocaine rebate" instead. If nothing else you have to admit John had some grande cojones trying to pull that one off.

FOG can destroy everything (if the client is set to PXE boot), but you still have to know what you are doing. If FOG f'd up things you can be pretty sure it's on purpose. I have been using it for years and have deployed thousands of images with it. Never once did I image a machine I didn't intend to. One other thing it does is automate most of my inventory tasks, and join the domain. That alone is worth the trouble!

I never got to experience PAL (Phase Alternation by Line) but it had some serious advantages. The biggest one, color phase, appeared to be much better since the sender determined the "tint" rather than the user. More luma bandwidth too as I remember. There was a time when RCA/GE put SCART jacks on some units, but 'Merica never took advantage.

Sony VHS consumer units were quite terrible. Nothing like the pro decks. Love the Panasonic stuff, put I suspect all the power supply caps have failed by now. The JVC units has a known set of problems that any good hobby guy can fix (tach cap on the drum motor, guide post repair) Almost anything you find now is built by Funai and that stuff is universally terrible.

As an old VCR tech (it paid the bills for 20 years :)) tepples is right. In VHS and Beta luma and chroma (B&W and the color overlay) have always been separate. Actually, that's true for NTSC broadcast too. Spend some time looking at NTSC you will be amazed how it ever worked. The math required is pretty amazing for the slide rule days. Analog FM stereo uses some of the same tech. SVHS decks were usually better quality and totally backwards compatible. If you find an "S" tape you will be glad that you get the better unit.

  14. Presentation Technology on What Tech Should Be In a Fifth-Grade Classroom? · · Score: 0

As a long time technology coordinator I certainly have doubts about some tech in the classroom, but I can and have pressed for presentation hardware. It really seems to make the classroom less boring for the students. I was a bored student, so I tend to focus on that ;) Epson Brightlinks (projector and electronic whiteboard) are full of win for example. I'm not a fan of Accelerated Reader, but like Accelerated Math quite a bit. We have suffered with some oversold solutions (I won't name Earobics or A+). Over the last 15 years our school has become recognized by the state for excellence and I like to think the proper application of technology is part of that. Parents that support student education is still the most important key to success but great teachers and reliable technology ARE important in the 21st century.

The VIC 20's drive was a cost reduced PET drive, going from an 8 lane bus to serial. But..... there were some extra wires in the 1541's cable (serial control as I 'member) that were put in to play. I have not so fond memories on EA's Pinball Construction Set taking about a half hour to load. And those 45 minute 7 swap copies! The C64 was the last computer I knew what it would do from the code.
