  1. Re:Holodeck or "Minority Report" on HoloVizio 3D, Holodeck 1.0 to Some, Makes Its Debut · · Score: 1

Well, thinks about it. I'd think that even Top 100 supercomputers would struggle to render at that kind of quality/resolution in real time from all the display angles (although it looks like it might just do left/right rather than up/down as well so that simplifies things a lot and makes it more possible), so I assumed that it was like the monsters in Black&White, which had preset animations according to where you 'touched' them.. except that this has pre-rendered graphics as well as preset animations.

People do have just reason to be skeptical, but if this thing is real, then I'd say it's most awesome advance in display tech since the tri-colour pixel.

  3. Re:bad video, lame product on HoloVizio 3D, Holodeck 1.0 to Some, Makes Its Debut · · Score: 1

Uh.. if you had actually read TFA like you claim, then you'd know that this is nothing like a system that tracks people round the room and changes the view accordingly. It works for multiple viewers, so it obviously is putting out different images for each angle. That's what makes it interesting. Anyone with some accelerometers and small displays can do VR headset type stuff, but this seems to be a 'true' 3D display, albeit on a 2D surface

It's quite weird how unenthusiastic people here are. I mean 10 years ago this would have made proper geeks cream their pants in excitement, but these days it's all about the criticism!? It's one step on the ladder to a holodeck, what's the deal with complaining all the time? You really expect us to generate the appropriate deflector and teleporter tech to do a 'real' holodeck with no intermediate steps between our current pure-2D displays? I didn't even think that we'd be able to make the type of display that is in TFA anytime soon, I'm well impressed.

  5. Re:Isn't it just a multitouch flat panel? on HoloVizio 3D, Holodeck 1.0 to Some, Makes Its Debut · · Score: 1

Well, this looks interesting, but isn't it just a multitouch 3D flat panel? You say that as if you build these all the time. If you watch the video then in no way does it seem 'lame'.. it's highly impressive. Obviously you'd need an even more impressive GPU to render everything from all the different angles though (I'm assuming that has to be done at least, I didn't see any useful info on the actual display tech in TFA). If that is the case, 3D pre-rendered movies could be done, but real-time 3D games would need a monster system..

To make your views known to a lot of people in the days before the printing press, you'd either have to write a friggin assload of spam letters (which in itself would cost a lot of money), or spend your whole life travelling the country orating to market crowds.. which is the only way a poor person could do it, and if what they were saying was controversial enough then they'd soon be locked up..

Yes I have limited knowledge of world cultures, despite having learned quite a lot in my life, and most likely more than someone who thinks that learning something makes you 'cultured'. When it comes to music I have stuff from plenty of cultures, from j-pop to Classical, cheesy 80s pop to remixed Indian bhangra. I can understand someone being pissed off at the amount of 'whining', but claiming that they are tone deaf is bullshit. Occasionally some of their stuff is quite atonal, but since I'm obviously so highly cultured in music, I have learned to appreciate that too. But then contrast that to some of their other songs which have glorious melodies and harmonies and it's obvious the guy was just trolling, bitter or both.

Won't somebody please think of the trolls? I'm glad that a 2 dimensional snow man agrees with me even if everyone else is on the Sony hate bandwagon. How could anyone dislike Sony more than Microsoft? It's hilarious to just be blind to Microsoft's ongoing anti-competetive practices and shoddy software, but to get eternally pissed when Sony try to implement DRM to protect their copyright. I don't agree with their methods, or even DRM in general, but with an entity as large as Sony they are bound to make mistakes and poor decisions at some point. The entire music industry have been jerks over the last few years - all large music related companies including Sony gave in to the DRM hype, but most of them seem to be coming around a bit. If it weren't for the rootkit thing then the process would have taken even longer..

  19. Re:I'll pass, thanks. on Sony Gives Educational Access To PS2/PSP SDKs · · Score: 2, Interesting

I know they're separate divisions of Sony and all, but it's hard to make that distinction from far away, watching them get away with murder at the expense of the computer illiterate or trusting ignorant. I don't know how you can feel good about supporting their platform if you're a software developer. Wow. Uh, well like you said.. separate divisions for one.. and didn't they outsource the actual DRM software? The guys who were making the decisions from on high in the music division are probably just as computer illiterate as the general populous. And hasn't it just been a one of so far? Compared to MS, Sony are the Carebears in my eyes.. MS have done far more damage to computing by even frickin allowing CDs to automatically install rootkits like that with their poor security practices. I understand that you want to have principals, but I like Sony because the majority of their products are actually good products, if somewhat overpriced at times. I dislike Microsoft because the majority of products they make are poorly conceived and implemented, and are often sickenly overpriced unless you get OEM stuff.

Yah I didn't say it wouldn't be fun, just it's not what I expected. I was heavily into my CS back then and I much prefer games where you can achieve one shot kills if you are skilled enough (there is always being a sniper in TF sure, but that's not exactly the same). I'm not a huge fan of games where you generally have to fire a bazillion bullets into someone to rack up a kill, but TF isn't really about the kills anyway.. so meh. I think the cartoony styling is pretty funky, but was just disappointed that it had replaced the original TF2. One of the best games that I've ever ever ever played was Operation Flashpoint, but the multiplayer on that was crap. Come to think of it, I should probably try one of those 'Battlefield whatever' games, did they ever make a current day one rather than Yet Another World War II game and that futuristic one?
