I've got two questions for all of you Slashdotters.
What will it take for Linux to become a mainstream desktop operating system? It's the billion dollar question.
To help with that question, ask yourself this.
What do 97% of all computer users do on their computers?
1. They research information for school. 2. They talk to their friends via AIM, Yahoo, Googletalk, Trilian, etc. 3. They send emails to their friends and coworkers. 4. They use it to play games. 5. Watch or Listen broadband content. (Movies, Music, TV)
Linux needs an Open Source Standard in dealing with ALL graphics cards. Plus, a basic way in rendering graphics.
Linux applications need a good commercial look. GAIM looks to ugly for mainstream desktop.
Hiring based on Personality Questionaires are a federal crime and violates the American's with Disability Act. Corporations can not discriminate against a persons disability -- physical or mental. There is many mental disorders that can affect personalities.
Rovers are doing great. An inoperable motor for the front wheel means nothing. It's kind of in genius of them to simply program it to go in reverse instead of giving up on it. It will fulfill it's purpose after all.
The rovers could end up helping during a manned flight to the planet. They could end up being the basis for future manned rovers.
1. Linux Live CDs work suprising well for me. 2. It wouldn't be easy for Apple's development team but benefits outweigh it. 3. Apple is in it for profit but nothing wrong with offering a coupon or rebate towards purchase of a Macintosh. $169 would be a better price. Apple could rebate it so AppleCare warranty is free with purchase. Apple would make money overall with increased computer sales.
Apple moving to x86 is just the first step of many in catching up to Microsoft in market. All Boot Camp really does is help existing Mac Users do cross platform work. It will help Apple to keep the existing user base as Mac Users. What Apple really needs to do is "tempt" windows users to switch using a Live CD. Someone might not be able to flop down 2 grand for a mac but they could put down upto $100 for a Live CD. And if they enjoy using OSX Live, then they might be willing to buy a new Mac somewhere down the road.
I predict that Apple will make a MacOSX Live CD that will run on all Windows pcs. Why wouldn't Apple do this? It would allow Windows users to be able to use a great OS like OSX. And if they enjoyed their experience then they can buy Mac computer.
One, Boot Camp is beta. It's almost certain that Apple will add additional features like Windows Xp 64bit, Media Center Edition, or Vista support.
Two, Apple computer are trying to get Windows users to buy a Mac. This beta release helps them accomplish this goal. A windows user can walk into the Apple Store, buy a iMac, walk out and buy Windows XP from bestbuy, go home and download Bootcamp, install Windows XP, use Windows XP, and then finally realize Windows is a piece of crap and switch to MacOSX.
"This will really help a lot of folks make up their mind whether to move over to the Mac," said Croll. "We think this makes the Mac even more appealing for all those Windows users who are considering the switch."
I don't think it's stupid or funny. I think it is immature and lamest attempt at creating an april fool's joke EVER. At least Google can do a better job.
They promote Linux, but if there's a bug in Linux, IBM is not the responsible party to fix that. It's whoever in the community. And you know, let's say that person has a death in the family. I'm not saying we're perfect, but at least you can expect appropriate commercial responses out of a commercial entity. I think those things are important to enterprise users.
What is Micrsoft response time for fixing Windows and IE flaws?
I am soooooo glad that Futurama returns for a season. Maybe Fox will air the last remaining episodes from the previous season. We can all thank Adultswim for this return. Fox Execs probaly used Adultswim's ratings for Futurama to make a decision on it's return or not.
FYI: The Simpsons are moving onto a movie in couple years.
Exactly what I was thinking. Flexible Organic LCD screens that can roll up into small hand-held device and are voice activated. Organic LCDs is an emerging technology. And such a device would require voice activation to keep it's size down.
If such a buyout was possible, it would provide several benefits.
Disney owns ABC and ESPN. This is a full set of tv stations and radio stations. They are ABC, Family Channel, Disney Channel, and ESPN. Disney also owns couple movie companies (Miramax, Touchstone) too. This would provide alot of media content for iTunes.
Disney also owns large stakes in Lifetime Entertainment Services, A&E Television Networks and E! Networks.
You people assume that such a buyout would merge the two companies. That is not true. Apple could buy Disney and make it subsidary of Apple Computer, Inc. Apple does own other companies like Filemaker, Inc is one such company.
This type of buyout would not stir up an antitrust suit with any President in office. Apple Computer does not bully or strong arm other companies. They tend to care more about it's customers then Microsoft cares about it's customers.
On the other hand, a buyout such as this is highly unlikly but not out of the question.
Space Adventures has been around years before Xprize was awarded. They are the forefront leaders in suborbital flights. Sorry people but this is truely old news.
Automobile prize should goto Honda for developing the Honda FXC. It runs entirely on Hydrogen fuel and is currently in use by ordinally families in CA.
DNA is unique to everybody. I expect they want someone to be able to decode the entire dna completely in 100 people easily.
Education is probaly some sort of technology that helps educating faster and better. Such a technology would be something like the 'learning device' on Battlefield Earth.
Nanotechnology requires building fully functional molecular robots that can be used to build/repair things or repair/heal the human body.
Actually, it is a planet to current standards.
They are however going back to determine what exactly is a planet. This would hurt Pluto more then 2003 UB313. 'Xena' is larger then Pluto. Pluto is about the size of a large asteroid and has the gravity of one also. New Horizons will actually help determine what exactly Pluto is.
2003 UB313 (code name: xena [Not a official IAU name]) is the last known planet in the system. The information about the new planet can be found at Wikipedia but a more trusted and respected source, Caltech, has information as well. Caltech also decribes a possible discovery of a moon of 'Xena'. Perhaps if 'Xena' is nearby, New Horizons can swing by the new planet.
Also, many astronomers argue that Pluto is not in fact a planet.
I like surprises -- especially from Apple. Apple is always innovative about technology.
IMHO, I think apple won't release Intel PowerBook quite yet. Apple won't release OSX x86 until it is fully ready unlike Microsoft who will release buggy and security hole ridden OSes.
Some people are just clueless. I hate it when people try to predict what they will do next. Apple is tight liped on everything they do. They do what they want. This is why I do not pay attention to ANY rumors about Apple on the internet.
I don't sue -- American Center for Law and Justice does that.
FYI -- ACLC has won many cases. One such case is allowing a Bible classes to occur on school property.

Anyone volunteer for a Manned Rover trip?

Quote from Macworld Article:
Thank You, I am glad some one else saw that. US Government has already spread disinformation, especially through world wide tv.
I would classify this article as OLD NEWS.
I will consider this the lamest April Fools joke.

You should visit InPhase site and read their information on holographic storage. They also have few pdfs on the subject.

I was thinking the same thing. I am hesitant in adopting VOIP because of that.

PDAs won't die, they just need to be reinvented. Anyone got an ideas?
