    Are you talking about how they removed Google from the search bar in Firefox? You can add it back really easily by going to http://mycroft.mozdev.org/ There are a bunch of other great search engines you can add too.

    The contempt comes from the understanding that these users don't understand Linux. It comes from knowing what a treasure we have in Linux, and seeing all the "dumb" adopters wishing it were more like "that other OS". It's maddening. I can't wait until HaikuOS kicks in. We can direct them all there and be done with it. Also, "decent graphics" is subjective in the extreme. I guess it's about priorities. Some people can't tolerate a UI that's not super pretty. Some people think pretty is more important than Libre. Yet they still won't just go buy a Mac. Well guess what? Stick around with Linux long enough and you'll get what you want. Just look how far the various GUIs under X11 have come in several years. Imagine how nice and shiny it will be years from now. But I bet even then people will bitch about how it's just not good enough compared to "________OS". I don't _hate_ anyone for this assbaggery, but it sure if good and goddamned annoying sometimes.

    I don't know about anyone else, but I am getting damn sick and tired of devices that NEED firmware. Why does every little peripheral need to contain LOGIC!!! I want DUMB machines, damn it! Why can't an SSD simply be a "mass storage device"?? Let the OS worry about wear leveling, etc.

    MPAA, RIAA etc(?), have put many dollars into tracking users of bittorrent. I'm glad you haven't been sued yet, but who's to say you're not on their 'to do' list? You use a heavy Blocklist? No? Then don't be surprised if you get a letter or phone call. If you're a light BT user, maybe you're too small a fish. Point is you don't know until you get tapped. In contrast, usenet --wait nevermind. Would everyone just STFU now? Cable-Kiddy invasion #2. yay.

    And guess what? You've been eating "GM" crops for years. People have been using selective breeding on pretty much all forms of harvestable plant (and animal) life to increase crop yields, disease and climate resistance, and pest control since at least Roman times. That statement reveals some real ignorance on the part of the public. There's a *really* big difference between cross-pollination/hybridization and genetic manipulation. I think much of the public shares your perception. And again, I call it dangerous. But that's the nature of ignorance ain't it?

    I'm all in favor of scientific progress. In fact, I'm a big fan.

    But until the science of genetic manipulation is (close to)perfected, all they are doing is 'fooling' with it. Coupled with todays climate of unbridled corporate power, this stuff is very dangerous IMO. Please bear in mind, it's not the scientists who get to push 'products' to market. And, corporations will *always* be able to buy a scientist who supports claims of safety.

    I file GM under "not worth the risks". (And _do not_ give me that old "it'll help starving people" crap. No. What will help starving people are governments that aren't run by evil shits).

    I don't like 'em

    I use as few as possible (wifi and 3d accel is all). To the folks of ubuntu who are sad about their distro embracing the 3v1l, I'd like to point out that GNU/Linux is an open system. Go ahead and limit yourself. Please don't presume to limit others. However, IMO, ubuntu did break an implicit promise to its users. Gladly, I've always run Debian.

    If anyone is interested in a distro that actively excludes proprietary stuff *for real*, have a look at http://www.gnewsense.org/. It's sponsored by the FSF. I haven't tried it, mind you, as it's (drumroll please)....based on ubuntu.

    I sincerely wish for open spec 3d hardware and wifi drivers. I just don't have time to wait around for them (nor the ability to "support" their development).

    Seriously.

    *Most* "recycled" electronics in the US end up in trash heaps in China to be picked through by poor people. Gleaned for valuable metals. In these open-air dumps there are no controls on leaching metals into the soil, etc.

    Does Dell *really* recycle or just dump the stuff someplace that pays them by the ton? And don't be mislead by Greenpeaces' approval. They score based on production toxicity not recycling cleanliness. Granted Dell's doing "something", but my point is we don't actually know where the boxes end up. TFA didn't say.

    I'm not a zealot --I use closed video drivers, but these kinds of needless (IMO) upgrades
    just smell like trouble to me. And for the record, Flash 7 has performed flawlessly for me
    on Debian Testing...

    I recommend to try it on any small people you may know.

    I honestly don't understand the hard-on a lot of people seem to have for IPv6. I LIKE NAT. I thinks it's neat. I like the idea that my systems can have un-real IP addresses. IP addresses that can actually change! Wow -cool! When the day comes that each box on my home LAN is required to be perma-identified, I for one, will be royally pissed off.

    AFAIK, Laptops with Windows pre-installed don't come with the install CD. This means if you want to dual-boot with Linux, It's going to be really sketchy resizing the NTFS partition and using Linux on the remainder of the drive.

    What will it take for Linux to become a mainstream desktop operating system? It's the billion dollar question.

    It will take an ubuntu-like distro with a name that isn't goofy and that comes loaded with all the multi-media codecs ready to go, along with a corporation to provide hand-holding... Oh, and a nice fat price tag so sheeple will think they're actually exchanging value for value. Personally, I want Linux to flourish in *business*. I use Linux 100% at home, and I honestly don't care if it ever goes "mainstream".

    Linux needs an Open Source Standard in dealing with ALL graphics cards. Plus, a basic way in rendering graphics. It's called VESA.

    Linux applications need a good commercial look. GAIM looks to ugly for mainstream desktop.

    If you say so. But speaking strictly for myself, "commercial" is not a quality that I long for in my Personal Computer.
