Humans: "We've got guns and know how to use them."
Aliens: "We are communicating with you from a vehicle in orbit around your moon. Feel free to fire your missiles at us but at some stage during the week it takes them to reach our position we will move away. We will head back out to the Kuiper belt and begin nudging asteriods into your orbit."

  11. It's a different country on Cambridge Breached the Great Firewall of China · · Score: 0

I don't understand why Cambridge is so interested in meddling in the affairs of another country. It's a different country, with different laws and culture, their values are not the same as yours, get over it. It's a society that has been around for a long time and I would have thought that it was quite obvious, given China's history, that they clearly do not want to be influenced by the rest of the world. The action undertaken by Cambridge does nothing to help the people of China, it just makes their leaders build a better wall. I can't help but think this is an intellectual jizz fest, if you really wanted to help the people of China wouldn't you be better off focusing on the issues raised by Amnesty International?

I think some people have jumped to the wrong conclusion. The Topic Title is "Self Contained Power Source?". You'll notice the question mark at the end of the title, this suggests to me that ScuttleMonkey read the article and has in fact highlighted the problem with a greater than 100% efficient electric motor, ergo, it becomes a Self Contained Power Source which is of course absurd.

There appears to be a market opportunity for a manufacturer that can certify their equipment is up to xmas party requirements. The statement that "VS forces you to adopt speed and not quality" is as silly as saying "open source development forces you to make non-standardised user interfaces". The quality of the code written depends entirely on the effort, skill and experience of the developer, personally I find no evidence to suggest VS forces people to write bad code. Of course I've seen bad C# and VB code, but to blame the IDE is insane. I've seen bad PHP but I don't instantly blame zend.

  19. Re:China, the Final Frontier on The Why of Space Program Races · · Score: 0

The EU may struggle to overcome regulatory issues but I don't think India will have that problem, the problem India has to overcome on it's quest for 1st world status is natural resources but I think they have a reasonable chance of solving that problem with new technologies and increased use of nuclear power. China's natural resources are too abundant for it to ever look like Japan imo.

  20. Re:China, the Final Frontier on The Why of Space Program Races · · Score: 0

An interesting comment. I think as the EU matures, India evolves and China moves forward, it is feasible that the US may be the 4th world power. That's not going to sit well with the xenophobes. Why are you worried that soon someone will be bale to look into your backyard with their satellites but you have no problem with the fact that other people have had to put up with your govt doing it for years? Ultimately it is going to be sheer economic weight that will establish the world order. The space race is somewhat irrelevant in regards to this matter. Manned space flight will continue to be a veil for intelligence and military research. Anyway is their a space race? I don't see the US stepping up space missions because China have launched a rocket. So where is the race? Also I don't think China is launching space missions to try to keep up with anyone, they are doing it to learn how to build rockets for whatever purpose or for their own goals in space.

hahaha I think someone just lept straight out of Blade Runner and into real life. So it's a matter of survival hey? So what you're saying is that a large portion of the population has to move. How many are you suggesting migrate to another planet? 4 billion, 5 billion, 9 billion? That would probably help the Earth (or Ocean as Clarke prefers) but I have to tell you, the resources required to move that many people to another planet just aren't available. It would require a fraction of those resources to fix the top 5 major problems with this planet.
