    You are only partly correct. My twist on the story is that fake release dates are constantly updated to be in a reasonable timeframe to keep customers from switching to working alternatives. Micrososft is and has always been the king of varporware.

    As long as you dont install any tarballs you are safe from havock, you might have to upgrade a broken packet or two afterwards though. If you love to do tar zxf foo.tgz;cd foo;./configure;make all;make install, you might get some crust in the filesystem to clean up.

    Partly right, 30 minutes is useless information, not for the reason you say though. As a matter of fact 30 minutes is a quite good increase (roughly 15%). I dont understand why some people always tend to talk about changes that way. Maybe becuase they can slant their text any way they want (I mean slashdot posts are tabloid journalism afterall). Huge increase of 30 minutes in battery life. Insignificant increase in battery life of only 30 minutes.
