I've never met anyone that was excited about windows.
Excited doesn't mean that same as enthusiastic, or thrilled, it can refer to negative feelings as well...I think MS cause a great deal of excitement among the Apple crowd (sorry, the Mac Community) and the OSS crowd..I get excited, but not in a good way, by Windows all the time, so excited I could put my fist through the monitor sometimes. I'm pretty sure Torvalds was using 'excited' as an antonym of 'calm' or 'bored'.
What we need are great nerds who're smart enough to appreciate that a human angle as well is something to respect and aspire to. They're the ones we need as managers, they're the kind I'm trying to be and the kind I'd want to be led by.
Well, once you start being really good with people, managing interpersonal relationships smoothly and well....you're sorta stepping out of nerd territory and into 'smart, tech-skilled person' land. I'm sure this will get me modded flamebait, if I'm modded at all, but according to a lot of people I know, one can't be that socially skilled and still wear the 'nerd' tag. I consider myself a nerd, because I'm into technology, science, sci-fi, geek culture, etc - but I'm also outgoing, somewhat charming, if I do say so myself, and I don't look like my mom dressed me. Consequently, a lot of my non-nerd friends would never dream of calling me a nerd.
Ultimately, you just don't put nerds in management roles, you make them SAs, or coders, etc, and put people-persons in management. You know, managers.
fair enough, perhaps my wording sucked. The individual "programming" of the ants is identical for each type (sentry, forager, etc) - which is certainly not the case for humans in a free market.
um...free market economics don't rely on unbending regulation at every turn, like the ants in TFA...I'd say this makes a case that 'things sort themselves out if left to do as they please', or self-regulation, are what you see when you aren't looking closely enough, and that in fact regulation helps large systems operate optimally.
It's nothing but 30 year old sitcoms that weren't particularly cool in the first place! I mean, you can concentrate shit, and what you get is concentrated shit. Which is bad.

I've had 5 mp3 players now, and the iPod was easily the least intuitive, hardest to use, most fucking annoying player of the lot. I'm sick to death of hearing about how Apple's products "just work" because iTunes is by far the most irritating media player on Earth, the iPod is the only player I've owned that wouldn't drag/drop music...I currently own a 1GB Creative Zen Nano & an 80GB iPod video - the iPod hasn't been powered up in months, it's just too annoying to use.
Being reamed anally to the tune of $170 a month for 12mbps down, 2mbps up, with 90GB a month of downloads before being capped to 128kbps. Now THAT is "broadband penetration" and it hurts.
If I go to hbo.com and try to watch clips, it knows I'm in Australia and won't let me watch. BBC news, however, which your license pays for, and I don't, is freely available. There's no real difference between that and BBC television clips being available, is there? Or BBC's world news on radio? Does it affect their production costs if I watch some of their material from here?
Heh, you're a designer, I'm guessing, and you're happy to diss non-designers who compare Photoshop-GIMP. When you're an accountant or a legal secretary, then you can make pronouncements about OpenOffice's usability compared to MS Office. Geez, you just laughed off the non-professionals who make such bold pronouncements.
What I really want to see is a review of MythTV by someone installing it with no clue about linux. Has anyone ever tried starting their linux experience with MythTV? I find linux gurus referring to "a bit of tinkering to get it working" unhelpful, as a bit of expert tinkering can be years of failure for a n00b.
Wow, the woman who made the complaints for "Warriors for Innocence", whose blog is here is quite articulate...see if you can find the excellent new English word she's coined from this blog excerpt (hint - bold):
If there is any doubt in your mind about who your "representatives" are really representing, watch the vote for cloture on the immigration bill today - or, as I like to call it, the "Unexclusive-ing of United States Citizenship" bill.
And while businesses may be a bit slower on the cell-only uptake
I can really see a receptionist who runs a 200-line switch being able to switch to a cell without hassle. And yeah, most of us don't need a landline...oh wait, the internet, we might need a line for that. What unmitigated wank.
Seems to me after reading your excellent comments that perhaps the protections afforded to religions in general need to be revisited. Why churches are immune from standards that the rest of society have consented to is beyond me.
Slashdot has run afoul of these pricks before, and a lot of the/. community has very strong feelings about them. If free speech is considered a fair issue for/. then this is certainly within the scope.
You people laugh all you want...I've been in hiding now for six months, after receiving credible threats from the terrorist group "LOLCATS"

10: n = Now.Year() + 1
20: Print n + " may be the year of the open source desktop"
30: Wait.Years(1)
40: GOTO 10

You silly man. Octopus is GREEK octo=eight pus=foot, so octopuses is fine, or octopodes would sort of work too (podes=feet), but only sorta.

Torrent, schmorrent.
I can't believe it, here I am reading Paul McCartney's words and nodding in agreement. I feel a little dirty, but that's ok.

I dropped out of high school, and I'm doing better than most folk - there are other avenues to education, thanks very much.

I wonder what Nike would pay me to grow a nice thick swish on my back for summer.
