Us too! The cool thing about the Gamecube is we love it (and my wife was NEVER a video game fan) as do our kids, 6 and 3. With Mario Kart, Mario DDR or Super Strikers (how great is that game?) we can all play together. Not that we play all the time, but it's just cool that we can all sit down and play. Of course once the kids go to sleep and my wife goes to study it's all me...
I'm with you, I the Wii is just going to continue this trend and bring more into the fold.
SUSE Xgl versus Dapper's implementation?
on
SUSE 10.1 Released
·
· Score: 3, Interesting
I've been using Dapper Drake at home -- any comments as to how far along SUSE is with their Xgl implementation versus what we're seeing day to day in Ubuntu? (those 'bouncy' windows are just so cool to move! I can't stop!);)... seriously though, they're cool!
I would expect SUSE would have a better Beagle install though, and that'd be fun to have.
Exactly my point, although at this gig we *have* to use XP (bit forture 500 -- already got the SCO letter -- legal said no Linux -- etc) but I have PuTTY to SSH to my homeserver (freebsd) where I can do everything I need, including IRC via BitchX (IRC is blocked at the firewall here at work, and although I could prob work around it via proxy I'd rather keep it all sshhhh quiet.

My thoughts exactly! Whip the Wii controller, the whip flies out...hmmm...seems Nintendo is changing the landscape just as they said they would; and it's still 7 months till the darn console comes out!
Get yr games in now MS and Sony, I think it's gonna be a long Winter for you!
...again, Nintendo is going to win at having the games that are the most 'fun'; but having to stand/twist/turn is just going to bring you into the game that much more, and make you (and others watching you) smile and laugh. All this about the controller, and the more we hear about it, it sounds like it's going to be more of a game feature than anything since the rumble pack.
I'm already cracking up trying to keep up with Super Mario DDR, so I can only imagine how the Wii games will make you move!
What does this mean for people in *this* country that do such things? Let's assume they're treated the same with a adjudication system...what kind of trial could they expect from a jury 'of their peers'? I think this precident would serve as a big deterent showing the long arm of US justice.
I have software RAID 1 (gmirror) setup and working perfectly with two 80Gig SATA drives. How did you set it up? I used Dru's article on OnLamp [http://www.onlamp.com/pub/a/bsd/2005/11/10/FreeBS D_Basics.html], and now I have a fstab that looks like this:
In development over the last 5 years I think the most useful tools are IM (or IRC) and Wiki. Email can be used to setup a time to meet/work on things, from there constant talk back/forth via IM is perfect. Hashing out overall ideas via the Wiki is perfect for before and after, and allows for ones ideas to get fully out there, then edited by others during critque.
This has been true for me working on OSS at night with a partner in Qubec as well as working in the same office with a developer two aisles away.
I had a 6600 GT nVidia card in my Dell/Linux box, and it was overkill for all I wanted to do. Look at the kewl new effects with xgl and 'stretchy' windows -- really cool effects that don't need the kind of graphic horsepower I had. Now I'm looking at a Mac Mini -- years ago I would have never considered on board graphics, but the fact is, it's now more than I need. I love games, but I don't have the time to play the latest ones, so I end up playing the ones that are most fun. Quake II and III don't need allot of graphic power, and I've seen CS:Source running on XP on a Mini and it played great! Those are the only things I need now, so the market for 500$ video cards will diminish over time, as it has. Sure, the tweakers that need the most will get them, but joe and jane user aren't going to need a 512Meg RAM video card to check their email.
I'm tired of the 'hook' of Linux is that it's free -- it should be seen as an equal alternative; albeit one that is free/open and community supported. I'm sure this scares folks off, but to have those fears doused simply because something is cheap seems the wrong tactic. I remeber seeing those crappy 200$ eMachines PCs running some hacked up KDE desktop (that looked about 2 years out of date) at Fry's, and the whole thing was cheap. Cheap keyboard, cheap mouse, all onboard crap, cheap, cheap, cheap. Why not produce a reasonable box for home use? Look at how inexpensive some Dell's are, and they're not using just cheap crap, some of their components are good, and their case design has come a long way. Having them as an equal alternative to a Windows box would be my wish. Before I get the na-sayers, yes, they are equal for 80% of the population; they can surf the web, check email, listen to musak, whatever most of the ppl do...they don't need 14 kinds of cd burning software to choose from for example...Linux has all the apps they need. At that point it would fall to brand recognition, which many would still go with Windows, but I bet more would go for an alternative if they saw it as an equal value, and not just some cheap hacked together box..02
Hmmm...points well taken. I had no problems with Threading though, but they're certainlynot as crowded as/. -- so perhaps you're right on that as well. Still, I maintain that the layout, non-cramped style would serve/. well and take away a big chunk of the clutter.
As for me being rated -1 Troll I think that's pretty funny since I was being serious/honest on where/. design should look for a more useable look (if not function Steve).
Thanks for the reply, I'll try to find another site for a model. (not fark.com, that site is much worse than any other kind of site I"ve seen).
something that looks fresh, something that is not cluttered with tons of boxes/links, something that has a great moderation system with readable threads, something that will degrade perfectly on all browsers (including links/lynx)...Let's see...what can I call as an example...Oh, I know:
Seriously, that site is so much easier to read, navigate, use; it's just years ahead of where/. is, and it would be easy to change the colors, add those BIG icons like CmdTaco wants. I don't create themes/designs myself, but I know when I find a good one.
and I've had much more help from other customers when asking about products.
> the return policy is great - I've returned opened software without a receipt, motherboards, and a variety of other things, many of which had no defects, without any problem at all, and no restocking fee.
That's a good point, and I've had the same experience. The other thing is allot of those 'open boxes' go back on the floor where you can pick them up super cheap. And to your earlier point, the thing I liked about Fry's the most was they *had* all the hardware. Here was motherboards I'd only read about online, and at Fry's I could actually see and touch them.
So yeah, for deals, geeky fun and the most cash registers in one place on earth, Fry's is the way to go, just don't ask any questions.
Funny, I used to live in Austin, so I have shopped at all three of these stores. Out of all of them Fry's pertends to be the most 'geeky' but if you ask any technical question you don't get an answer. This is true when I asked in the Computer section, the hardware section, wireless and yes, Apple. Not trying to sound 'glib' but I knew more than these folks, so when I had a question of something I didn't know, they didn't either. This was frustrating, but since I know how to 'use the internet' I am able to learn/get advice from there, and then go buy.
That way when they try to 'upsell' you, you know it's just a sales pitch and that you really don't need ${FEATURE} since you'll never have any use to ${FEATURE_DESC}.
This does point to 'regular' folks going to buy computers; they're not going to get what they want, because they don't know what they want. I've walked a few friends/relatives thru computer purchases to insure they get what they need, and not more. Of course I think this is going to be true of anything; refridgerators, power saw, car...so I don't think this is a big revelation. Fun article though, I could just hear the subwoofers from the car audio section while I was reading!
Not that I post to/. that much (!) but there's just too much info out there not to take a peek. Of course then you get sidetracked with another link, you have 20 tabs open in Firefox, and you're wondering what you were supposed to get done today (or this week) at work!
Still, it's nice to have the choice rather than no choice at all.
you said a mouthful there, while I don't use XP at home, *if* I had the option to I would run it just to kick off Steam and Download some Half-Life based games to play some different online FPSs (I run RTCW, Q2, Q3, Doom, UT2005, etc under Linux) that my other windows friends play, that I haven't had the opportunity to.
Plus I really want to see if businesses will see the benefit of buying Apples over Dells and HPs for their employees, or at least us IT folks that know a thing or two...
this is nice, but who would have thought the next Power...MacBook Pro would come out, instead of a 'consumer line' (read, NOT a ~2800$ laptop) MacBook to really get ppl switching.
For me I'm really starting to fall for (or lean hard towards) a Mac Mini Duo -- not only can you triple boot on it, there's now video of it doing 'fast OS switching', much as it does its 'fast user switching'.
OT - so nice to see a refused lyric on/. -- but then I see you're afiliated with punknews, so it makes more sense. I hit it every now and then, it's a nice one. Also, you've reminded me to call my local shop and have 'em order the refused dvd that is finally coming out!
Are there any boots out there of any of their shows? I have a french one, but it's mp3 sourced and not the greatest.
that 10.5 (OS X) will run windows apps just like current OS X runs 'classic' apps; just a normal window within OS X. Wow, that would just be killer, not that I need that feature, but it would just open things up so much more than dual booting, or even virtualization. Heck, run X as well, and have GTK apps from linux...

Perhaps you could post the rest of your post here, in the comments section then. Just a thought!

Wow, that's gotta suck, hope he finds it soon! Anyone know what he had in that case?

It's moving so fast I'd be hesitant to grab a book yet -- YMMV.
