Other than the normal Microsoft programs, a list of best practices would almost certainly be useful, i.e:

How to work on the system safely (think before opening email attachments)

How to browse safely (know how to spot phishing sites, avoid providing sensitive data, install a proper browser like Firefox)

How to take care of your operating system (defrag regularly, delete unwanted files), and

Basic security (be careful with passwords, instead of sticking them on the monitor)

It's probably going to be free for a good amount of time methinks. The problem with it is that, the game is just too outdated and old (in MMO years) to generate any good revenue. Compare to WoW, COH or another random name in the industry and you'll notice a huge difference in quality and design that it's almost painful.

  7. Research! on Advice for Linux on a Laptop? · · Score: 2, Interesting

It would be a good idea to list down the brands and make of the laptops you're interested in buying. Don't worry about compatibility at the moment, deciding on how your future laptop would look like comes first.

Afterwards you might want to visit Ubuntu's forums and run a search on them to check out how current users of those laptops are faring with Ubuntu at the moment. There's usually quite a bunch of threads discussing the graphic drivers to use, how much of the system is working perfectly etc.

And check out the wiki as well!

Trunks aren't exactly the best place to stash expensive stuff while you're away from the car. While I'm not sure what heat would do to powered-down electronics, I've known a few people who lost their laptops as the thieves pried open the trunk. Best way: Bring it along, or simply leave it at the office/home.

3.5 thimbles of salt and a lot of water?

Actually just talking about the compression, it would make sense. I'd say most html pages have an abundance of duplicate tags (lots of divs, brs for example), similiar text ('email','me','omg','sex'(i'm actually serious about these)) and so on. I'd imagine that's how Google's cache servers handle it as well. *Unless* you put back in the binary data such as jpeg images, then you get that extra 99 thimbles of seawash.

Interesting thing is whether or not one can come up with a browser to navigate between pages while still in compressed archive...

You're probably looking for a session manager/crash restoration extension, personally I'd recommend Tab Mix Plus. Every time it crashes, I just shrug, restart Firefox, click 'Restore', tadda, all tabs restored, back to browsing.

One thing I've learnt about opening PDFs is... well, don't open pdfs. Check the link first, then unless I know it's a mediocrely sized file, right-click, 'Save as'. Haven't tried the PDF Download extension others are recommending though, trying to keep my extensions at a minimum. :P

You're right, in a way. Most never ever install an OS, ever, themselves.

What happens instead will now be: Mac user family member/friend/colleague tells user they can run Windows on the Mac, user asks the nearest IT-capable family member/friend/colleague/whoever to install it for them, new OS gets installed, now happy user runs Windows app. Word of mouth travels awfully fast remember.

While I suspect Microsoft is well-intentioned this time, note that to 'Extend' they have to at least achieve the existing standard and then increase the value by incorporating new features to said product... which I don't see happening considering the Vista delays and stuff. Microsoft Linux (trust them to not take up cool names like Port25 Linux :P)?? No siree.

And then there's that 'Extinguish'... the only sound method to out-distro every other distro out there is to both ship bundled with OEM's and stay FREE. And then cut down Vista sales?? No siree, not going to happen.
