I once had a job at a wireless ISP where I would regularly troubleshoot disfunctional rooftop routers located on an antenna mast. This sometimes left me balancing my laptop on top of a ladder in order to connect to the crashed device, which was particularly fun on high buildings during windy days. Every tried to troubleshoot and fix a kernel panic by tweaking kernel driver source code in a situation where you could fall to your death if you lost your balance? It would make an awesome geek extreme sport.

All of the "by hand" references reminds me of a certain scene in Back to the Future. Marty is in the future and finds Hogan's Alley the arcade game sitting there. Two young kids are there watching him play, reminiscing at how good he is at the game. The kids' response? "You mean you have to touch it?"

would a story like this actually be posted. And with such hilarity. But really, it seems many times we computer people give us more room for future expansions and inevitably end up hitting it (y2k 'bug', this, 128K should be enough for everybody, that kinda thing). Yes i know, we hit limits eventually. But, you would think that we'd prepare better for this and increase beforehand. (the admins did as mentioned, just missed the other part) Or are we lazy? Or all have A.D.D.? Perhaps we just do this "OOhh...a new piece of hardware/software/whatever. Um....yeah, we can wait to raise that limit."

I really hope they can recreate the feel of the game in the movie. We all know video game movies don't usually do well, but they have potential. I liked in Doom when they had the first-person perspective, i thought it was a great touch. I think I would watch the Halo movie (if it indeed does come out) just because of the many nights I've spent getting my butt kicked. With the huge popularity of the Halo series, I do hope it is a good movie.

But, with the up and down of "Yes it will be made" and "No, we're not going to make it" it makes me wonder if it actually will make it to the theatre.

  18. Apples and Oranges on Gaming Platform of Choice - Console · · Score: 1

Isn't comparing the two like comparing above fruits? There are certain advantages of consoles and PCs. PCs, IMHO, are better suited for first-person shooters. Keyboard and mouse are more suited for that type of game. I know you can get adapters and what not, but I'm going by what you get straight out of the box, so to speak. Upgrading is another thing. PCs can be upgraded as you need to/as you can, consoles cannot. But, with consoles being solely for gaming, less hardware is required in a way. No overhead "OS" in a sense. No other firewalls, anti-virus, etc... So I agree with one of the previous comments. What exactly is better ?

  19. Re:Growing meat... on Cloned Beef Coming Soon? · · Score: 1

well, that depends on how you cook it. For me, I like to get the "raw cut". It has a little hyde on it and that nice piece of fat over it. The fat helps keep it moist and bastes it a little. Since it's lean, you have to watch how you cook it. Before I got my smoker, what I did was trim the hyde off of it and trim the weird layer of fat off of it (if you want) but make sure to leave a pretty good layer of fat on it. Make up a spice rub to rub all over the brisket (pretty liberally) You can use whatever blend you want, premade or one you make. Paprika, salt, brown sugar, garlic powder work pretty well as a basic one. Put a layer of water, oil, Worcestershire sauce and whatever herbs you like. Put a cooking rack over it (not a cookie sheet...the non-solid ones...drawing a blank) and put the brisket on top. Put it on about 200 degrees and cook for about 12-14 hours. Baste it with the same sauce every couple of hours. When it comes out, it will be very juicy, so when you cut it make SURE it's on something to catch the juice. But, that's an easy way to cook it. Much faster and it will dry out, being so lean. But as far as the meat itself goes, the raw cut is the best. Trimming it yourself seems to give for better meat. Should turn out just fine for ya. And mods, please don't hurt me. It's been a long day, and I couldn't find how to message....that, or I'm lazy.

  21. Strange fixes on Computer Voodoo? · · Score: 1

At the school system where I used to work, we had a librarian's computer that would periodically not boot. We tried to see what it was on site, but to no avail. We took it from that school to our central computer fixing place to take a longer look. (it was about a half an hour away) When we turned it on the next day, it booted fine. No problems at all. We took it back to the school and it was fine, until the next time it decided to not boot. Again, we took it back and magically worked fine, same scenario as before. So we tried leaving it unplugged overnight to simulate being at the other place, thinking that would do it. Nope. So we took it back, and of course it worked. So, the 'fix' to the problem was to take it back to the office, leave it in the van, then take it back the next day and everything worked just fine.

[rant]I think these days, with technology, computers, and the internet being so prevalent in society that this term has been a tad over-used. Everybody from seasoned programmers to the typical "newbie" uses this term for a broad range of topics.[/rant]

Personally, I think it remains whichever one you apply it to. (I may be taking "hacking" to be more of programming in this) I like to dabble in game programming and I think in that aspect, more along the lines of game play, it is more of an art than science. When you USE the science to create this wonderful, beautiful world of monsters or whatever the case may be, it becomes art. Having said that, for other parts of the game, it is more of a science in that you're figuring out how to do things or using it as a means to a solution.

So I think it's whatever side you lean towards, or none if that's what you like. If you like art, you may see it as art...if you are more of a science person, then you may very well see it as art. But that's just a Friday afternoon rambling...pay no attention. :-P
