  1. Re:Not so Definitely on Autism Reversed in Mice at MIT Lab · · Score: 5, Insightful

I have to think that the people who say that are mostly saying it because, to date, there hasn't been a way for their child to be any different than they are. It certainly can't help the development of the autistic child for the parent to be running around lamenting the fate that has produced such a child. These statements indicate acceptance of the child as they are, not, as it appears on the surface, that they wouldn't really accept a cure if it were available. I think you would be VERY hard pressed to find a parent who wouldn't go for a cure if it were available. Not saying there are none, just an incredibly small number. And in those cases, a baseball bat might be in order.
I just think you need to cut the parents who make those statements some slack. They are dealing with a very difficult situation.

They are Earth, Water, Air, Fire and Space. Earth and Water have limited and localised availability for the human habitat and growth.

I wonder if one of the five elements will be downgraded now that Pluto is no longer a planet. It seems to me that that last one, Space, is kinda tacked on there. A lot of other cultures only recognize the first four. I mean, the other four kind of define Space doncha think? A little revision in the Paanchbhootas may be in order here.

Where do we get the social stigma associated with "meeting someone online"?
As a species we are oriented toward the visual and faces for recognition, status and bonding. There was an interesting four part series with John Cleese and Elizabeth Hurley The Human Face from 2001 that covered some REALLY interesting face factors.
That, of course, is missing in the online world. Sure you can see a picture, but it's not the same. There is a subliminal information loss that lowers your ability to really "know" someone when you are in the online world rather than face to face.
Face Time, as it turns out, really IS important

One could write a bounds checker that would catch everything, but usually we have better things to do, and that bounds checking piece of code would be monstrously large.
If your point is that we can't even write a bounds checker, how can they work on something harder, I would respond that the bounds checker is there to help a decent programmer, not to do everything for the programmer. If you had another point, I missed it entirely.
