That's interesting. Here in Portugal we also have that superstition, although no special word for it, afaik. Curiously, hours before the latest strong quake (6.0, Richter scale, 12/2009), I remember thinking to myself about the "earthquake heat" that could be felt on that particular hot night. Weird coincidence, I am sure, since the epicenter was located 265 km (165 miles) away.

  4. Re:KeePass on LastPass Password Service Hacked · · Score: 1

I'm very happy with KeePass. It enabled me to have a poor man's authentication token:

Instead of using a password to unlock the database, I use a key file stored in an SD card. I mapped one of my laptop's multimedia buttons to the hot key that triggers the global auto-type feature, so that when I need to authenticate somewhere I just have to press that button and hit enter to unlock the database. The authentication is done automatically and the database stays unlocked for 5 minutes. When I leave the computer I take the card with me and when I get back all I need to do is insert it again. Pretty cool.

This system makes it tolerable to use a master key in Firefox and Thunderbird.

I keep the most important passwords (homebanking, for example) in a different database, requiring both a key file and a password to unlock it.

  7. Re:soundcard recording on P2P Music Downloads At All-Time Low · · Score: 1

Many soundcards have a mode of recording called something like "What You Hear" (Creative, IIRC) or "Stereo Mix" (Realtek). If you select this as the recording device, you can record everything that is sent to the speakers ("what you hear").

In Windows 7, Realtek's Stereo Mix is disabled by default (at least I had it disabled), to enable it right-click on the speaker icon on the taskbar and select "Recording devices" (I don't have Windows in English, so the wording might be a little different). If your soundcard supports it, it should be in the list.

However, I prefer to either download the FLV from youtube and rip the audio or record a stream with VLC.

I own a 40D and an EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens. Can't say I ever experienced what you mention, specially when using the extra sensitive center-point. As long as the selected AF point is on the target, it usually focus accurately.

The only situation where that happens, in my experience, is when using all of the AF points, because it always focus on the closest subject. I find it mostly useless, so it's normally set in the center point. When shooting static stuff at close range using big apertures, I do select the closest AF point, since locking focus and recomposing can change the point of focus.

Other than that, maybe the bird is too small and doesn't "fill" the center-point, thus confusing the AF?

Very true. The only speeding ticket I ever got was on a similar situation, on a national road (90 kph / 55 mph limit) that crosses the outskirts of a small town. Although most of it is has nothing but land and bushes on either side, that section of the road technically belongs to the town administration. In my country, there is a fixed limit of 50 kph / 31 mph inside towns, so that means the speed limit applies there too...

I was going bellow the national road speed limit, but more than 20 kph / 12 mph above the actual limit, which means it was a serious offense, costing me the minimum fee of 120 euros and if I got another serious offense in the next three years they would suspend my driving license for a month...

I got so pissed off I never drive above the 50 kph limit on that place anymore, but now I have to deal with insults from furious drivers who go behind me (it is also a no overtaking zone...) and with the dangerous maneuvers these drivers do trying to pass (remember this experience?).

  17. Re:There are a lot of problems with this book on What Scientists Really Think About Religion · · Score: 1

I wonder what people meant when they answered atheist or agnostic. These two terms describe two very different things: the former deals with the belief in the existence or nonexistence of deities, while the latter deals with claiming to have knowledge about the existence or nonexistence of deities. This page really puts things in perspective.

I would say most people who call themselves atheists fall in the agnostic atheist camp: they do not believe in gods, but don't claim to know they do not exist, just as almost no one (hopefully) believes in a teapot orbiting the sun, although it is impossible to prove it's nonexistence.

According to the story posted in beliefnet.com, these are the statistics regarding the religious beliefs of scientists who answered the survey:

    - Atheist: 34%
    - Agnostic: 30%
    - Having no doubt about god's existence: 9%
    - Having some belief in god: 27%
    ---
    Sum is 100%.

I wonder, if the questions asked clearly mentioned the four combinations of (a)theism and (a)gnosticism, would the results come close to this:

    - Gnostic atheist : 34% - 04% \ split the 64% how you see fit
    - Agnostic atheist: 30% - 60% /
    - Agnostic theist: 27%
    - Gnostic theist: 9%
