Ok, I was fine up until this point: "Strictly speaking, follow through isn't a physical requirement for hitting home runs. Once the ball has left the bat, the bat imparts no more energy to the ball."

Huh? I've never played baseball in my life but it's simple enough - if you were to swing the bat in such a way as to be able to stop it immediately the ball has left it, the energy imparted would be very small indeed; follow through is everything.

Going back to Wii Sports, it is supposed to be incrediably easy to "cheat" in all the sports games, greatly reducing the fun level. Personally I'm surprised that there hasn't been more reviews along the same lines as Sofge's, but I guess Nintendo marketing has done a good job. (Got the journos well liquored up and not let them play the same game too long.)

It looks (ftm) like the Wii is going to be a huge success, however, it will surely depend on how well the remote is exploited vs. how many of the games rely on gimmickry.

I've watched Firefly several times, and I felt that the characters were alive and real, but the film did not have the same level of believability. I know that it's a "2 hour movie" but it was trying to be too many things with too many people. We could easily have ignored Book and Inara completely, just gone with the people on the ship and then after making the Audience get to know and like Wash, BAM!, wooden stake through the heart. What we got was Jayne taking all his funny and then slayer girl River taking his role as pilot.

I agree that it was vintage Joss, and because of that unsurprising. Book's death was crap, not the being killed off but the still being alive to die just before the doctor reaches him. Wash's death was even more boring. He was probably the most uninteresting character in the film. There was nothing between him and Zoe, and all of a sudden she's greaving over his death.

Serenity was one of the better SF films to come out in recent years but the plot is contrived and the final act is just too unoriginal. I do agree that the promotion was not so shiny, but I don't think that Serenity approached anywhere near the quality of Firefly. If it had been as good as Ariel/Out of Gas/Our Mrs Reynolds it would have (imho) been a much bigger success.

(I'm not saying that the Wii can run windows, just that the processor will be good enough.)

Of course I know next to nothing about the Wii CPU except that IBM generally make really nice processors. (The rest of the company tends to let them down.) It really depends on how work IBM and Nintendo have done to customize the CPU to the Wii - I'm guessing some but not enough to make linux/windows sluggish.

The spec of the cpu comes down to how much Nintendo wanted to spend and whether they asked IBM for an order of 5 or 20 million units. If we're lucky they asked for 20 million at $50 each.

I have no idea if MS met their targets with the Xbox but they surely took some consolation with the fact that they sold more (outside of Japan) than Nintendo.

If Nintendo sell the same amount of Wii this time around and MS and Sony grow their markets, heck even if Nintendo retains its market share the Wii may still be a failure for the company. They state that the actual gamer market is quite small; they want to grow the market and they have these mythical non-gamer markets they are chasing after. Basically they want to sell a shedload more than the 106 million units the PS2 has sold. (Of course this might be marketing hype and they may only expect to sell 30 million units.)

I think most of the people who are saying "Eeek" at the price are those who don't have your love of the 'cube.

For us noobs, purchasing any games console is a risk. The Wii is a pig in a poke, we know next to nothing about it. We don't know what the graphics are going to look like, we don't know the speeds of the CPU/GPU, we don't know if the 3rd parties are going to exploit the new remote, etc, etc...

At the price they're charging, (higher than expected,) more people are going to adopt a wait and see attitude and *if* enough people are waiting for the console to prove itself then developers aren't going to be selling enough games and the Wii will truly become the Gamecube V2.

One could argue that the Xbox/PS3's greatly superiour processors allow them to cram in 80% more fun than then Nintendo Wii.

I never thought Nintendo were going to bundle a second controller, I did honestly think that they would give us something useful, like a classic controller shell to fit over the wiimote. That to me would have added value to the package

I was distinctly unimpressed by the E3 video of Metroid, it looked boring, it looked like Halo. Zelda did look more interesting, but never having owned a nintendo console in my life I have no attachment to Zelda, Mario or Samus. There are a large number of people who eagerly waiting for these characters/games and they will spend £180/$250/250 + whatever for their games, but there is a larger number of people who need to be convinced. Nintendo needs the hardcore market, it needs the loyalist market but it also needs the ignorant grand/parents market and the 30 something casual gamer market.

As well as upping their advertising in the run-up to Christmas, I think MS will do one of three things... (I've kinda already said the first one elsewhere)

        1) They can give us something for free - include the wireless controller, Kameo (or something else they own) - just compare the picture of Wii sports baseball with a picture from Halo 2 (an xbox game) - That's going to help convince people that the Wii is a kiddie's toy.
        2) Drop the Core completely, and reduce the price of the premium to £239/349/$349. The point of the Core machine was to get people into the shop and talking to a sales rep, who convinces them that for ONLY 100/$ more they can get everything they could ever want from a system. (Also having only one system should reduce the manufacturing costs.)
        3) Keep the prices/systems and use heavy handed MS tactics to encourage stores to sell Xboxen.

I see your point but (imo) the Wii demands a second controller. I admit that games like Red Steel, Metroid Prime and Zelda won't require a second controller, but the Wii is being sold as a family friendly, casual gamer friendly, friend/party friendly console. Wii Sports for example is supposed to be very very very easy, so it won't hold your interest and you'll need at least 2 controllers and vast quantities of alcohol.

I'm sure they (MS) have lots of options for how to stifle the competition - this is Microsoft after all! - including boring stuff like advertising. Most likely they will keep the price as it is and offer more incentives to the retailers.

It's one thing to say that most people don't have HD tvs but most people like to future proof their purchases. And by spending £20 I can get a far far superior piece of kit. I can buy the core TODAY and upgrade it later. I actually think the Wii games are more "attractive" than the 360 games - but the 360 games LOOK more attractive.

Basically what I'm saying is that pricing the wii at £179/$250/250 is moving the Wii from "definitely must buy as soon it comes out" to "hmmm, same price as a 360, do I really want to risk it for a crappy gimmick."
