I've witnessed that, and I found it to be sheer crap, not beauty. Give me a MS Natural keyboard and Bluetooth mouse any day. The "Mighty" mouse is too touchy, if you have a finger resting anywhere on the left hand side it thinks every click is a left-click, and it just doesn't have enough buttons anyway. As for the Apple keyboard, it has no number pad, which is horrible, and is also missing a whole lot of keys that Apple have just decided that you don't need, such as a delete key. Cmd-Backspace is not a decent alternative.

    >>(Hey, most of the last 10% is taxes anyway, right)

    Not Right.

The idea that at a certain point, the govt takes most of your earnings in taxes is an urban legend.
For anybody working by the hour, there is no "tipping point" where the govt keeps most of each additional dollar - it is just untrue.

It is for me. I'm in Australia, and I have a government university debt. Depending on earnings, this is repaid through tax. If I earn enough in a week, the tax rate on any additional hours I work is around 51%. Also the repayment of the debt is a flat rate on all earnings, that increases depending on gross earnings. So it is actually possible for me to take home more money by working less hours as my earnings approach the amount required to put the debt repayment percentage to the next level. Of course it all works out at the end of the year when I file my tax return, but it can be somewhat frustrating to see that working more has netted me less money at the end of the week.

I'd agree with this. I work 11-12 hours 5 days a week, which gets me great overtime pay (usually make as much extra in overtime as my normal hours). I start at 5:30 or 6:00am, so I don't finish too late, but the sleep debt can certainly creep up on me. I've just started back at work after two weeks off, and I'm now feeling great, before the time off I was constantly tired. My time off was spent sleeping in until midday most days, totally worth it :)
In case anyone is wondering, I'm an express freight delivery driver, in which role I make better money than I could've expected in an IT role, at least until I'd had 5+ years experience. I also love what I do, despite having university degrees, I can't see me changing career in the foreseeable future.

  9. Re:flicker crashes on New York City Street Lights To Go LED · · Score: 2, Interesting

We've been using LEDs in traffic lights for many years in Australia. The whole system runs from 12v DC (it did so for years even with incandescent globes too), so flicker isn't a problem. The issue of differing brightness of each colour of LED is addressed by having differing amounts of LEDs in each colour light, depending on relative brightness. This works quite well, they all appear to be around the same brightness to the eye.

  16. GPS will never beat local knowledge on UPS Using Software To Eliminate Left Turns · · Score: 1

Being a delivery driver who averages 90 deliveries over a 6 hour period each day, I can assure you that using GPS would be a huge waste of time. It's all about knowing the best way to go, and knowing as you leave each drop exactly where you'll park for the next one. In the city, you can't just stop anywhere, so you have to know the locations of loading zones etc.

That said, I have to agree with the idea of minimizing left turns (only in Australia it's right turns I minimize), but I don't need software to tell me when it's a good idea or not. There's also lots of other factors to take into account. Some customers need their stuff early (and if they're paying us for sending freight, they get priority), others close for lunch at certain times etc.

I think the biggest hurdle to efficiency in the transport industry is the high turnover of drivers. I've been in my current position for just under 2 years, and I'm now the second-longest employed driver at the depot. (Only 6 drivers at my depot, but the turnover rate is even higher at our larger depots)

The worst part is, while they don't use ATX, they DO use ATX connectors. So you can plug in an ATX powersupply, and fry the motherboard, PSU or both. You can also do the same plugging a Dell PSU into an ATX mobo. Adapters are available however, I'm sure Google can help with that. Otherwise, if you're good at soldering, you can do what I did, and resolder the PSU wiring to standard ATX format.

Australian currency is so much better. We phased out paper money last millenium (still legal tender however), and now have plastic notes and coins. Our paper money was far more advanced than US currency anyway, it had full-colour printing!

Our lowest denomination is now the 5 cent coin, 1c and 2c have been removed from circulation. We also have 10c, 20c, 50c coins, all of which differ from each other in a logical manner (bigger coin = bigger value). Our $1 and $2 currency is in the form of gold (color) coins, both of which are chunky, and feel as though they're worth something, similar to the way UK Pound coins are. The $2 coin is smaller diameter, but thicker than the $1 coin, and was the most recent to appear in 1988.

Pretty much all denominations are popular. The 50c coin is not seen as much as others, but if your change is 70c, you'll get a 50c and 20c, not 3 x 20c + 10c. Our cash drawers are ingeniously designed to accomodate our currency correctly, so we have no such problems with "less popular" denominations. :) I saw an "old" $50 note for the first time in about 10 years a couple of months ago, I accepted it as payment for a chinese food delivery, knowing that there would be no problem with it, I'd have happily accepted $2 notes too, despite them being out of circulation for 17 years. :)
