If Windows cost $1000 in the US, how many people do you think would buy legitimate copies of it? Consider ontop of that, that people in China are much poorer, on average, and maybe you'll start to see why people pirate.
So that companies realise that people want Linux, which will encourage them to start making drivers/software compatible. If people buy, then add Linux, companies just assume no one wants Linux.
However, if you read the Windows EULA, you can get a full refund from the retailer for the copy of Windows, so that proves a point, and saves you a lot of money.
With almost any kind of text document (not spreadsheets and the like), you can open it up in notepad(++) and access it fine, you just lose most of the formatting.
Yeah, I have serious trouble getting rid of Norton. It crashed half way through the uninstall, an them became impossible to delete. I had to go into Linux and manually remove it. Kaspersky seems better, but occasionally takes up 98%CPU, for no reason I can see.
