I agree with you on Jobs buying out, but to say Microsoft is blundering big-time is dead wrong.

    1. Microsoft just released .NET 2.0
    2. Microsoft just released VS.NET 2005
    3. Microsoft just released SQL Server 2005 (big release IMO)
    4. Microsoft just released a new version of Visual Source Safe with web services and SQL backend
    5. Microsoft is due to release Vista shortly, a new round of Office products, and mroe
    6. Sharepoint IS actually doing well in the govt and growing in the private sector -- all the bid proposals I keep getting faxed to me prove this if anything

It is clear that Microsoft is going to have a huge 2006 and possibly a bigger 2007 in some ways (once some of these things catch on more). You may be unaware, but MS doesn't just make money on software -- there's training, contracting, etc. There will be a new wave of contractors learning all this stuff and spreading it. If anything, Apple may need to increase liquidity or else they could see a lot of their OS/X ground they gained go to waste. Add to that uncertainty over new Intel based Apples. I think you get the idea.

That said, you are also correct about needing to control your own board. The recent trend has been to take a number of companies private. Remember the goal of any public company in the minds of the board is usually to increase Shareholder wealth. That is often contrary to real innovation -- see Intel.

A huge improvement I found using the 2.0 beta of the framework is you can now pass multiple params to threads. Before, the only way around this was to either use Asynchronous Callbacks on threadpool threads or develop a bizarre hack for managing threads which was really ugly and hard to manage. The other biggest improvements for me are Generics and Master Templates. Lets hope they come out with a good version of ATLAS for 2.0 too.

  3. Re:Death of MySQL on Oracle To Offer A Free Database · · Score: -1

I hardly think they see MySQL is their biggest threat. This is very narrow thinking, even if we are just talking about the web. Oracle is an enterprise RDBMS, MySQL is a personal database. I would fire any of my developers if they ever used MySQL for a commercial website. Sorry, but they don't compare.

I would have to say that their biggest competitors are Microsoft, especially with the release of SQL Server 2005 and IBM. The most probable reason for releasing such a free version is to maintain developer loyalty and get their products introduced to people early, especially in academia. These are the people that are going to be using higher end DBs and looking for a solution to implement. Microsoft has taken this exact strategy for years. For instance, MS visits campsuses and hands out free software all the time not because they love education, but to get people to learn and thus later continue to use and promote their products.

FYI, my personal website is running on MySQL so I do feel like I'm not entirely biased.

You used ASP and developer in the same sentence, for shame. Seriously though, you do know a lot of .NET developers use the languages for non-web applications. I think it does try to promote OO Design, for example even a page is a automatically a class. It comes down to people not knowing the technologies, which you get in any language. I've seen my share of bad C, Java, Python, PHP, etc. I see little difference between .NET and Java. There's always horrible coders, period.

Microsoft's big fault was trying to make it easy for asp people to jump into asp.net. It's an entirely different dynamic and why you see so much bad code. Isn't the same true for any popular web language these days?

Apparently you lack understanding of market based economics. Competitive response. It has a name. But I agree, they do seem to be a little lax in the innovation business, but then again has that ever actually been their business. I see it as them just leveraging their competitive advantage, which is simply make things marketable and in some cases *gasp* better.

And I ask Mr. Petzold and anyone else....why is anyone using VS.NET code generation in the first place? You do know that you can turn most of that off. For ASP.NET, never use the designer, set it to the html editor. I write loads of .NET everyday and never once have I wanted or needed for the dev env to generate code for me. Really he needs to realize that so much of the stuff there in the designer is for people who don't have time to learn the entire .NET framework and want to fire off some simple db app in under a day without knowing little or no programming. I'm looking at you ASP "coders." I've never met any real developer that uses the VS.NET designer. Every other aspect of VS.NET is great. Intellisense saves you from looking at the docs, you can easily set compiler options, symbols, etc...you can change the indent of big blocks of text, write plug-ins, doc almost anything anywhere. Sorry but bad programmers promote bad practices, not the dev tool. You should be shot if you use any dev env code generation (hello rational!). You should be able to pickup any dev tool and use it within a few days like a pro. Really, it's not a hard concept. If it's there, doesn't mean you have to use it or the program is evil because of it.

Generally in .NET people don't use dynamic SQL, they use stored procedures. In fact in some cases it's harder to do dynamic SQL. If you're not running your site with at least parameterized, escaped, dynamic SQL if not stored procedures you need to just shut it down anyway. *Waves at all the PHP sites running badly written scripts out there*
