  1. Re:The discipline is played out on Particle Physicists Facing Insane Competition For Work · · Score: 1

We're talking about multiple decades of relatively unproductive but highly expensive research. These folks did string theory for an entire human generation and it came to nothing. Jeez. Move along. Nothing to see here.

Just because its not profitable and you can't find answers you expect when you want, it doesn't mean its a waste of time to the people most qualified to make that determination. It just means that human enterprise is currently driven by a system of values that affords us our current results. Perhaps that is why we have a world with 7 billion human beings and 1 billion jobs. It a crying shame that 6 billion qualified contributing members of humanity must just "move along" just because there is no money available to keep them working at Walmat. Since when did money become the prerequisite value of human existence and purpose? What a sad state of human accomplishment, after all. Bacteria seem wiser.

  10. I recommend the Kaiser Report, Larry King on RT on Russia Today: Vladimir Putin's Weapon In 'The War of Images' · · Score: 1

You'll find RT on YouTube if you can't figure out where its hiding in your cable line up. In my market Comcast has it on two channels that are generically labeled "Leased Access" on all of the TV Listings. I've never seen anything listing channel RT on any published lineup. If you are flipping channels, RT will have a green logo and wire crawl. Its like CNN without commercials, but regular intervals of station ID breaks.

The Kaiser Report runs Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, but I still can't figure out what time, although it often repeats throughout the day. Their news has an ambivelant tone, and their agenda strike me as slightly libertarian with certain left and certain right leanings when it comes to social and political issues. In other words, they will not contradict the Putin anti-homosexual social stance, but are glad to elaborate on occupy wall street and the agony of austerity in Greece. In other words its a refreshing anti establishment voice, but in the end it is no less self serving than any other news organization that is subsidized in order to further a political agenda. Nevertheless, I'll take it rather than leave it, and I just LOVE to hear Max Keiser ( strangely an anagram of "I Seek Marx" ) mouth off on the impending economic Armageddon of the West. At the very least his view illustrates that no economic ideology is immune from the unethical behavior of greedy men. Greed and injustice is every bit as widespread in ANY system, institution, and political system. When you stop paying attention, or blindly think its an "us" and "them" then you may be deluding yourself of the facts. Thinking that your shit doesn't stink and that some people/cultures/nations are better than others, and more deserving of dominating others is a slippery slope. If instead, RT helps to bring us closer to the "Golden Rule" of "To each their own" and "Do unto others" then I think that its great! But we must diligently e x p a n d our perspective of this world and try not to be so quick at ethnocentric anachronistic hegemonic ideologies that are spoon fed to us like preachers to the choir in an echo chamber.

Simply put, its best to listen to unconventional views that challenge the status quo. Expand your horizons, and watch a little RT and Al Jazeera and Democracy Now, for a change... and if you already are, then turn on some Fox News and 60 minutes, now and then.

May the farce be with you.

  12. Social beings engage in social methods. on The Science of 12-Step Programs · · Score: 3, Insightful

I am a strong advocate of whatever works.

It doesn't matter who is right or if its the best way or stupid or God or placebo effect. I think the issue is that human beings effect one another and that people with problems of any kind do have an affect on the people around them. These problems may be the result of their experience of the people around them. Whether or not addiction is a choice or a disease or a spiritual or a social disorder really does not matter. What matters is that those who may be afflicted with this dilemma attempt to engage with society in a way that will help to resolve behavior that is inevitably harmful to the self and to the people around them. I don't mean to judge others, each individual can make that determination for themselves. But if it seems that there is wreckage and damage to themselves and to others, and if it is difficult to ascertain how to get a handle on the situation, then its a pretty good bet that engaging with other human beings might be a good starting place.

While it is also true that 12 step programs derive from a spiritual, albeit even Christian flavored template, that in no way limits an individuals personal approach or beliefs. Its just a social venue in which to engage with fellow addicts. And yes there are all kinds of people out there, from the weird to the mundane. Some with "fight club" agendas and some working on a date for Saturday night. Many are addicted to 12 step groups and some are stoned and court mandated to attend. Whatever. It doesn't matter. Its like the rest of the world - there are all kinds. But if you try to do SOMETHING, try to engage with others in a way conducive to new behavior, or another perspective, then its a good place to start.

Why a 12 step? Because its all around, in pretty much every town in the western world. It is anonymous. It is inclusive of anyone who can just be present and listen. It costs nothing. You can leave at any time. If you don't like the kooks or freaks or holy rollers or drunks then just go and find a group that is normal like you. Or blow it off. Nobody will stand in your way. Just know that it is available to you, even if its not particularly useful or interesting to you, it remains an option. And the possibilities are as varied as the human beings that comprise our world. Some are even Scientologists lurking in narc-anon.

Like most things you get out of it what you put into it. If you spend more time drinking you'll spend more time dealing with those consequences, whatever they are. For some, it just means better wine, for others its a DUI or health concerns or anything else you can imagine. If you spend a lot of times doing something else instead, then you will get other results. It may not make you happy or solve your problems, but it will take time away from drinking or gambling or eating a gallon of ice cream or it doesn't matter what else.

My point is perhaps best stated by the immortal Tom Leher. He once said,

"Life is like a sewer.... What you get out of it depends on what you put into it"

And as with most things that goes for the 12 or 13 steps as well. Let the farce be with you.
