I won't deny that there's some junk you have to delete
Dealing with this "junk" negates any price savings to me.
comes with a full copy of Windows XP Home (as is listed in the system specs).
Oh really? So your Dells came with a standard Windows install CD, not a "restore" CD or a hidden partition?
15" LCD starved for real estate? What are you talking about? It's 1024x768, and perfectly readable.
Some people like to fit more than two paragraphs of text on the screen at a time.
I know this is Slashdot, but maybe you should get a clue.
Yes, the tenuous arguments you put forth most CERTAINLY makes you a superior being. How, oh sage, can I ever reach your level of wisdom? Oh wait, it's not wisdom, it's bullshit.
Also, there are quite a few things that make the article's machine better than the Dell. The Dell you're probably referring to has Intel integrated video, which is most likely a lot worse than the GeForce chip. This matters because crappy video equals laggy rendering of applications and data. A 15" LCD is either starved for screen real-estate or impossible to read.
Dell is also notorious for pre-installing tons of crappy bundleware that cause lag and headaches, as well as not providing a "real" Windows CD (how do you think they get their prices so low?). If you buy a standard copy of Windows (or spend $0.10 for Linux burned onto a CD-R), you won't have to deal with the crappy stuff Dell wants to infest you with.
I was going to say the same thing, but I believe Ghost will make it out sometime (can't say the same for DNF). The push back to "when it's finished" was largely due to it moving from a third-party dev house back to Blizzard, and who knows how much of the original work they decided to scrap. So I guess it becomes vaporware when you add the date it moved back to Blizzard plus the average dev time of a Blizzard game.
What sort of amazes me is that even though [Sony's] last console came out before everyone else's, their newest console is a year behind the latest generation.
Um, that's only if you consider the 360 "next-gen". In my opinion, it isn't. At least not yet.
This is what I was thinking as well, but more along the lines that Microsoft probably has to submit tons of documents during these "disputes". So they basically are playing politics here, similar to governmental politicians, where they release some of the "facts" to try and make themselves look good. And in this case, they get the added benefit of claiming the EU process is "opaque" and that releasing some of these documents makes them saviors of democracy or something.
Not really. In 10 or 20 years, will MP3 still be supported? Perhaps, but there will no doubt be better codecs by then. If you are stuck with a bunch of MP3s, converting them to the lossy codec du jour will generally make them sound worse. A Free, lossless solution prevents this, as you can transcode and not degrade your music as codecs become better, or if the need arises to convert your music into some obscure format that doesn't handle lossy -> lossy very well.
What's the most widely acclaimed feature of the Xbox 360 so far? Xbox Live Arcade and Marketplace (downloading demos).
Who are the users of the 360 so far? Early-adopter gamers, as well as pseudo-gamers who are quick to hop on whatever IGN tells them is going to be big.
Hey, why don't we jail people who sell bottled water too! I mean, you can collect that stuff from the rain or from a lake, for free. Selling it MUST be some kind of violation! And don't get me started on that evil public domain.
When my generation was growing up, our parents did whatever the hell they felt like doing and the kids came along for the ride. Nowadays parents spend all weekend with their kids.
Wrong. Every generation has both types. Your rosy view of the past is only detrimental to this discussion.
It's because our parents didn't spend 98% of the salary on buying shit for us kids.
Yeah, your opinion is OBVIOUSLY 100% accurate and nobody did anything else. Oh wait. Take your crotchety bullshit elsewhere, thanks.
Well, since XP just isn't up to the task of running an original Xbox game, we can only assume the worst. Maybe they'll rename "Ultimate" the Halo 2 edition.
As long as "Blue E" ==== "Internet" for 90% of the population, I think it's perfectly fair to sanction Microsoft.

Human ears aren't lossless either.

No dude, it's going to be Oni, wrapped in shiny "Halo 3" packaging.
The main difference I see is that 99% of PCs still look like ass.
He'd halve the number of chips inside it.
What, is this guy just trying to piss off the Physics department? Maybe his hard drive got erased when they fired up a big magnet or something...

And the same "gamer base" has, for the past ten years, picked Sony. Hmm.
I hope you've never had to study writing... (it would kill you)
Such an assertion requires numerical justification to prove it's not BS.
One would force a Jewish or Muslim person to consume pork?

The neat side effect of this is that people who want to charge unreasonable prices won't get any sales, unlike proprietary software.
Isn't this what most licensed games go for anyway? I don't see that working out all that well...

Yeah, having an opinion is BAD! Only idiots and terrorists have opinions!
Along these same lines, what if one is morally opposed to supporting proprietary software vendors?
Yeah, it's always the man's fault.
