It's cclearly wrong to rip off chunks of people's programming and sell it as your own, but if there's proof of linear progression of programming which achieves a similiar function using a similiar process within the programming framework, there's no reason the other's work should be thrown out, or licensed against the 'prior artists'. I saw a screening of a film last year at USF called The Privledged Planet. Admittedly, it gratuitous in support of "purposeful design", but they did a great job of approaching what makes Earth so suitable for life using a myriad of fields. It may suggest life with a purpose, but it was strongly pro-science, and probably worth a watch, even if you are skeptic of the premise. So here's the FIRST step you want to take if you are thinking of joining into startup venture, and I can't stress this one point enough.
Get an independant lawyer to protect your interests.
Don't just "go with the compny's lawyer", and certainly don't "have faith" that your partners will look out for your interests. From partners failing to sign royalty contracts after the work was finished, when royalties were agreed upon before the work was started to the board seperating you from the company on accusations from a total slut of a partner for spending money.. from your own bank account.
The bottom line is, we're all in business to mke money, and not everyone is concerned with the how.
It sounds like you've got a really good job alot of people I know that have been laid off from startups would love to have after their experience. It's because the capture device used in your $300 camera isn't powerful enough to record HDTV resolutions at real-time frame rates. NTSC video is 648x486, but the few extra pixels are for cropping on the screen edge!
There's a simple answer to your question. You don't have to buy the phone from Verizon, you just need a Verizon SIMM card in your phone. If you want a full featured Motorola phone, I would purchase a phone from T-Mobile or Cingular, and then simply replace the SIMM card.
