When the alternative is dunce AI, any online interaction is welcome. My first online experiences were provided by my father, who created a student acct for me at the university he worked for in the early 80's. Our computer was a thin terminal, so it was online via phone/suction cups or nothing. I fondly recall competing against the college students for Rogue high scores. Later in the late 80's I got invited to join by some neighborhood kid riding around on a bike giving out accounts for his basement bbs. More fond memories of flying asci spaceships and trading. By the time the gui based internet of the 90's came around it felt quite robust and mature.

It looks good at 720p, but given the choice between phone and laptop, desktop, or tv, the phone is in last by a long shot. There is a funny disconnect between network speeds and bandwidth caps in mobile right now, but even with what I consider heavy use and an 'unlimited' plan I'm never even using 1GB. I want to be upset, but I simply don't want or need very much transfer on my phone yet.

  8. Good on Alternative Android Market To House Banned Apps · · Score: 1

When the android market started banning apps based on carrier request it only increased demand for such a market. As the number of people using modified phones increases, the incentive to make something better than the shady file locker/forum distribution method will only increase. Megaupload and similar sites falling apart may help the momentum even more. Cyanogen/Koush are in the best position to launch a new product like this since they can roll out new apps cooked into the ROM and they are already the most well known, trusted, and user base.

I'm thinking Vonage is not going to live up to expectations since you can now get similar things from the companies people know.

Also the POTS companies are waking up a little bit. My in-laws are FINALLY dropping dial up because Sprint is offering them unlimited domestic POTS and ADSL for $70 a month. About the same price as cable broadband + Vonage. Bottom line is that Vonage's previous competitive advnatage (Price) is less of a factor or no factor. And their service is inferior to POTS IMO.

Note. I'm a former Vonage subscriber now using a combination of cellular and Skype for voice. In my case the price of Vonage was too high and the service redundant YMMV

The real problem with this is that: 1. It wasn't documented, so people had to discover this non-intuitive exception. 2. It defeats the purpose of the hosts file. Had they also included the other AV vendors in the list and made the function public it may have seemed like a practical band aid to the hosts file hijacking problem. Instead they made it M$ only and hid it so it looks slimy. The issue is being addressed is also PEBKAC related.. If Windows users weren't logged in as admin the hosts file would be off limits.

  24. Plug-ins to Avoid unfairly targets fasterfox on Firefox Extension Guide and More · · Score: 2, Interesting
Plug-ins to Avoid FasterFox [mozdev.org] - Over the last few months the amount of visitors using Mozilla Firefox has grown to about 25%. The amount of bandwidth being used has also increased a large amount. Part of the reason behind this is that many Firefox users use an extension called "Fasterfox". This extension "pre-fetches" links on a page so that if the user were to click on a link it would load much faster because its already been downloaded. This may be more convenient for viewer, but is a major problem for many webmasters who are low on bandwidth. Since Fasterfox constantly requests new files, it can cause many servers to overload much faster than if a person viewing the same content without Fasterfox were to view it.

Fasterfox does some nice things and IMO belongs on the list of good extensions..
As far as the author's claim.. In the fasterfox config there is a tab for "Enhanced Prefetching" which comes disabled by default and has the following warning:
This setting should be used with care
Visit the FAQ page at http://fasterfox.mozdev.org/ for more information.
That page has some interesting answers on prefetching and seems to show that fasterfox is playing by the rules. I don't think the author has shown much expertise in the extensions field. Also if he's upset at fasterfox for bandwidth wait until he gets the bill from this slashdotting :)
