  1. Good for the drug companies too.... on Anti-Cancer Agent Stops Metastasis In Its Tracks · · Score: 4, Insightful

Ideally, Drug companies would love it if they can make Cancer manageable instead of curing. Look at Diabetes.... its manageable.... meaning the patient spends thousands to stay alive but never gets cured.

Where is the profit in a cure.

    A joke comes to mind,
Back when trades were handed from Father to Son; A son proudly proclaims to his dad, "Dad I cured the wonman who had been coming to you for 20 years and yet you couldn't cure her". Dad replies, "You fool, she was our only faithful customer".

you probably haven't seen indian police stations.

In rural ares they are a building with the most hi-tech equipment being a half dented radio used for comunication and dispatch. some will have a telephone.

In more modern areas they may have a 386 with win95 running on it, and very unlikely any kind of networking. so i wouldn't worry about police using the data for a few decades to come. CBI (think Indian FBI) on the other hand may be in a better position to make use of this data.

...That is the real answer. For the longest time, Nokia had phones that everyone bought. They were expensive, but so were Mercedes and BMW.

Then came the iPhone. Like it or not, it changed the whole mobile market. Nokia was complacent and was caught off guard.

I recall Nokia was so full of themselves that they dismissed Android claiming writing a phone OS is no joke.

Having said all that, I have been for the last 10 years and still am a Nokia fanboy.

I love Nokia philosophy of phone first, everything else later. I hope that stays.

  12. Piracy is a consequence.... on Regulator Blocks BBC DRM Plans · · Score: 2, Interesting

An old quote from where I come from goes like this... "If you see abundance of money and wastefulness of resources, then understand that someone's legitimate right to those resources is being compromised".

Yes, art... like any other field should provide a given artist a stable income.

Yes, the artist worked hard, nonetheless, piracy is a consequence of someone who is finding it hard to pay the bills wanting something beyond his budget. On the other hand, a given (successful) artist who will probably feed generations with the wealth accumulated wants even more money.

On purely human grounds, I find something is wrong with this picture, very wrong.

Once the songs has been composed, the value-added component for every CD or MP3 they sell just doesn't add up to the price they charge consumers. Even if you take into account the effort and labor of composing the song, it still does not add up. This is something fundamental to a working capitalist society. Things should cost a fair price, media does not.

What exactly are the media giants selling, is it art... then why have I bought the same song in LP, Cassette, CD and now mp3s.

I can't put my finger on exactly what is wrong with this model.

IMO, this needs to be revisited to figure out how everyone gets their fair share, consumers and artists.

  18. Cosmic Rays.... on The LHC, the Higgs Boson, and Fate · · Score: 1

Correct me if I am wrong, off what I have heard (and probably on Slashdot so take it with a grain of salt)...

Energies of LHC are already found when cosmic rays hit earths upper atmosphere... its just that we have no way of observing them.

So I would believe that whatever is going to happen inside LHC already happens....

Unless this theory is true and the Higgs boson really doesn't let Cosmic rays hit the atmosphere either... Maybe that is why we are all alive instead of Cosmic rays frying all living matter from earth.

Yah 54g is great, I used it for a long long time, however 3 boxes I had always had some kind of issues with 3rd party firmwares dd-wrt, openwrt even tomato. From hanging to dropping WAN on DSL, I stayed frustrated. In due time, I figured my frustration had nothing to do with me living in my mom's basement.

pfSense + alix has been rock solid.

The best part about my alix board based router... its fully supported by lots of opensource initiatives (monowall, pfsense, zeroshell etc) and come time for N, I just replace the minipci card on it.

Full keyboard only second to thinkpad is a plus, screen is 12 inch or so, thats a bit of a bummer, but I choose portability over larger screen.
