Oracle and Sun are primarily catering to Enterprises, not necessarily start-ups. I have been in development for 12 years now.

Small companies always prefer open source and these smaller systems, and rightly so, who wants to pay couple of tens of thousand per CPU when Linux and MySql will do.

Enterprises where transaction are critical, government agencies monitoring them and auditors watching like a hawk, they can't risk these smaller systems. THEY HAVE TO GO BY THE BOOK. So if the database crashes and backups corrupt, they can at least say, "We got the best, what else you wanted us to do".

    And the finer point.

It costs money to put up these towers.

Europe has a larger population compared to US, yet it has a lesser amount of land to cover with cell sites.

As a result, people/tower ratio is quite good in Europe and partially contributes to better plans.

We have the exact opposite here in Canada, where the population is 10 times lesser than USA and land is larger. You should look at our plans. I am paying 25$/month for 500MB, plus anoter 45$ for voice (I'm rather lucky as I have a grand fathered plan which gives me unlimmited voice).

Today, for the kind of money (about 90$/month). I would get 1000 min and 500 MB and 250 SMS.

Palm has an interesting patent from the days where Palm's could sync with internet content over com port or USB with a PC in the middle. This is exactly what iTunes and its Music store does to an iPod. If I was Palm AND Apple did not license this patent, I would sue Apple left, right and center. At the very least settle for Palm to inter-operate with Apple technology + get a huge sum of money from Apple just for the kicks.

I believe a lot of folks here have no Idea what Bell is doing.

Bell is not just doing it to its own customers but to Internet wholesellers who use Bell's infrastructure for the last mile to customer, something that used tax payers money to lay down in the first place.

What happened is bell was throttling their own customers, people started jumping ships, Bell was loosing customers like sand through a closed fist. When this happened they started throttling all other ISP who used Bell for the last mile. IT IS NOT BELL'S BANDWIDTH AT ALL THEY ARE THROTTLING. Beyond the last mile, the traffic is routed to the ISPs and uses ISPs bandwidth, yet Bell throttles them anyway.

This is a completely monopolistic move on Bell's part.

Bell could not compete on price or performance, so they leveled the playing feild by screwing every other ISPs performance.

Pretty much same thing happened when cell phones came around, all of a sudden, I couldn't remember anyone's phone number. I was used to look up the name in a contact list and click on dial.

Last year, my friend I went to a cottage , I reached first thanks to my tomtom, he got lost and called me for directions, I said "I dunno, the GPS got me here!". After struggling for an hour, he stepped into a big box store along the way in a small town and picked up a GPS, got there in about an hour after that.

So yah, we are becoming quite handicapped due to technology, not judging if this is a bad thing or a good thing, however if GPS were to dis-appear today, I have faith that we will recover quite soon, i.e. if GPS don't stick around long enough to effect our evolution.
