Are you getting upset because only one of those monitors is available in the US? Aww.. for once, we have nice toys in the UK that you don't have over there:D
I know you're already jealous of our budget defecit being much nicer than yours... and all those lovely cars we get over here that can actually turn corners and don't swallow an oilfield every few miles... A prime minister who, although imperfect, can at least form a sentence without prompting or major gaffe. A healthcare system that doesn't discriminate against those who need it most. The lack of the following: Jerry Springer, Britney Spears, Eminem. Lower gun crime. Civility. An armed forces which at least attempts to avoid friendly-fire. Oh, and then there's all the history, art, architecture...
Oh, I'm sorry, was I mocking your country? It's probably because your ego offended me.
What people seem to be forgetting is that the british carriers are 1) small, and 2) old. THATS why this is being done. Britain may already have the capacity for force projection, but those carriers will be phased out sooner rather than later, and replacements are needed.
Congratulations, you've quoted me out of context! Missing out the "for the.com/net/org set - so everything had a location" bit kinda makes me look stupid:D
"There is a.int. It's for international organizations"
Yes, but it operates solo, whereas, as I stated, I wanted everything to have a location AND a type.
So following my idea, the International Red Cross would be redcross.org.int, the American Red Cross would be redcross.org.us rather than just.org (which would no longer exist). The British Red Cross would remain at redcross.org.uk.
Nato would be nato.mil.int
Does that make a little more sense for you? It helps if you read whole posts...
IMHO, the real issue is we've got.com/net/org/biz/info/etc and then we've got country-specific.uk/fr/ie/de/us - but some country specifics subdevide again, giving you.co.uk/ltd.uk/org.uk/co.uk. Inconsistent! Ideally, I'd have had everything subdevided, but had a.int extension for the.com/net/org set - so everything had a location - either international, or country specific - and then a type -.co(m?),.org,.net, blah blah.
IIRC, this caused a security issue a while ago with a CSS issue because of the two-part country-specific domain.
IF we're going to have a system, why not have it consistent?
As much as they may push, will they have the traction to essentially force either companies to change their office software or microsoft to add in support in their software?
If MS does not support the format, it will never be widespread.
From that very page - "A situation in which a single company or group owns all or nearly all of the market for a given type of product or service." I suppose it's how you view the apple control of the industry...
I do note, however, that apple has a monopoly on digital music that can be played on the ipod - and considering the sizable market share the ipod has, having "This service is not compatible with Apple iPod" displayed on your music store website probably isn't a brilliant selling point:P
I'm sure I read on slashdot at some point, probably in a comment, that apple has reduced the rights you get with your itms songs three times, or somesuch...
"Really, the only hope for Napster, Rhapsody, and Real is to create a new DRM standard and try to convince the music companies and the hardware makers to adopt it. Microsoft's attempt to do so has already failed."
I love this comment, along with all the pro-apple comments that are going on in this thread. But consider this: If Microsoft was the monopoly in this field and other companies (like the beloved Napster brand) were having trouble competing because they were having to "get by" without the Microsoft system, everyone would be up in arms and demanding MS used open standards, bashing DRM, preaching the name of the small, independent companies fighting against MS tyrany..
Apple is using a proprietary DRM system - both bad words on slashdot - and the small companies are having trouble competing because of it. Why aren't we complaining? Oh yes... because no matter what the situation, Apple is always right and MS is always wrong. I forgot.
Watch some Gun Camera movies - they're everywhere on the internet. A lot of them, taken from choppers, bounce around a hell of a lot, despite the heavy image stabilisation being used, when when not firing. Helecopters aren't quite as stable a launch platform as they seem!
Being able to give your pilot and gunner a more stable seat would make aiming more accurate, and I'd imagine make the flight much less fatiguing.
Thank you for understanding how the world works, vainglorious:P People who complain about taxes often don't think deeply into their usage.
"don't have children, but they steal money from me to pay for schools."
Did you not go to school? Think of it as paying for your own education, years later;)
"I don't drive, but they steal from me to build roads"
Do you not cycle? Or walk? Road tax pays for pavement, too. Perhaps you use public transport or taxis? They use the roads, too, you know. Maybe you've had to use an ambulance - I wouldn't want to be in one having my spleen poked whilst going cross-country in one of those things:D
"I don't read, but they steal from me to build libraries." ...OK, I can't think of any witty ripostes for this... I clearly need to go to the library and read up a bit more.
IF the TC guys has been stupid enough to use keys that can be cracked as easily as you're suggesting, then it seems to me this won't be such a big problem:P
It's a fair point - but that was an act of civil disobedience. What we're talking here is foreigners interfering with a sovereign nation's lawful, accepted and recognised government.
Governments all over the world 'repress' information.
Is it right for the Chinese to repress Tienanmen Square information? This information is freely available most everywhere else on the world...
Is it right for Germany to repress Nazism? Many other countries allow it as a political movement.
Is it right for the UK Government to make paedophilia completely illegal? In other countries, such as the US with its free speech laws, paedophiles are allowed to lobby the government and try to garner public support...
I suppose the point I'm trying to make is - where do you draw the line, and where do you start saying it's OK to interfere with another country?
Disclaimer: I am not a supporter of communism, Nazism, paedophilia or any of the above. I think the service that's being offered - ways to ger around the firewall - is a noble thing no to. I simply find the whole thing morally ambiguous!
"The e-mails include a handful of temporary Web addresses that host off-limits content and springboards to other forbidden sites."
"Sounds like his company is doing a lot to promote Internet freedom in China, and for all the right reasons."
As much as I hate saying anything that might support the opression of a people, I'm going to play devils advocate for the purpose of ethical debate..
How would you feel if someone from a country that had no laws against child pornography started spamming email addresses in other countries that had laws against it with kiddie-fiddler links? Is it morally justifiable to impose your own political views on another population? Because that's what this is.
I'm pretty sure your government has done things that you might not personally agree with, but they did in what they saw as the best interests of their country. aybe you're a conservative who dislikes the idea of the welfare state - do you actively go around disrupting the welfare state for others?
Yes, my comparisons you could say are nothing like the situation in china, but you have to ask yourself - is it our place for us to go for vigilante justice like this?
right... we all know shilling goes on. Gotta love PA and their expose. GASP! and such... but i don't see Microsoft listed as a Hype Council customer.
Seriously - you're spreading the most dangerous FUD of all - FUD that is plausible. We know companies do things like this, so you imply that Microsoft is doing it too - without any proof that it's going on whatsoever. If you can find a single reputable source that states that Microsoft is doing what you're saying, then fine - otherwise....
yeah... You realise that this is what people have always said? "Music in the [20's, 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's - select as appropriate] was way better than the nonsense nowadays" Think about how many songs from those eras are actually still popular today. 99% of music has ALWAYS been crap, and we only remember the good 1%.
"but it seems to be the only way to stop dead shit marketers from feeling they have free reign to infest forums with their bullshit."
I'd love to know where your source was that this goes on...
Bram doesn't care of Azureus uses "BitTorrent" anywhere. What he's worried about is someone making a program called "SuperBitTorrent++" which is the bit torrent client plus a bunch of malware.
Google mauled by tax? Shares are doing awful? How abouyt we look at their stock history compared with some other big names...

You'd have thought, after the whole penny arcade crusade, people would know what a full stop is :)

This discussion isn't about operating systems or computer hardware - it's about digital music.

Apple has a monopoly in the online music market. Apple's offering is the dominant DRM standard. And no one else can use it.
Doesn't quite seem fair, does it?
