I mean, simply all these extreme weather events we've had should have some meaning to people. These are very concrete things.
I remember I was in Myrtle Beach SC about six years ago, and they had this huge bunch of tornados hit the beach area. That had never happened before. And this was after last years hurrican season.
Winters have changed too, winter seems to be coming later, ending later and it is wetter too. Looks like these are things hard to ignore, even though the data that proves it would be.
Interesting thing, a friend of mine is shopping for a car, and his main criteria is low fuel consumption. So it IS affecting atleast some people.
I wonder though, how common the attitudes you mentioned are?
I remember a place where my mom worked, they had a bunch of rather new PC's that they were replacing with even newer ones. There were many people who would have wanted to buy those, but the company felt it was better to sell them to a recycling firm. Apparently they got more money for less trouble that way.
What causes global warming is totally beside the point!
Yet global warming is a fact, no-one disputes that (anymore). What are we going to do about it? In addition, oil is going to become harder and harder to extract. It IS a finite resource.
Right now we are looking at massive future crop failures. Massive hunger even in western countries.
Large scale flooding of important cities and centers of production, disruption to transportation and communication.
We should be planning for these, stockpiling food, re-thinking food production, massively reducing oil consumption (we'll need it later) and building flood protection.
The POINT is, none of this is POLITICALLY, or more importantly ECONOMICALLY possible right now.
And that is what we should be worrying about right now.
In Japanese atleast. I'm sure it has been mentioned before. In Asian culture, the character X is synonymous with all sorts of badness and is used by teachers to grade really bad papers and has connotations of death and whatnot.
Another words, how about changing the name.
Selling the X-box in Asia is like trying to sella a console for the American market named the "Suxbox", "Shitinabox" or "Crapconsoloe 360" or something to that effect.
Your description was a bit confusing, but I do agree with you in that it really isn't that difficult. You only have to do it a few times to get the hang of it.
Of course nowadays in the States most parking takes place in strip mall parking lots.
So ironically (I think it really is irony this time) if you don't know how to parallel park, it means you probably rarely have to, so why spend $700 on an option you quite obviously wouln't use very much?
Actually, pure clean heroin, when used with clean needles and equipment is perfectly safe and a habbit can be maintained indefinetly with absolutely no medical problems.
My friend was complaining to me, how he was awed by the new claim of Windows XP (when it came out) how it would be the fastest starting Windows ever. Yet, one day he came upon an old computer that was high end in the 1990's and also an original copy of Win95. So he installed Win95 and was amazed by how quickly it booted and how much faster it was than his WinXP on a modern low-end system!
For the one-hunderth-time! These laptops are NOT for people who are goig hungry or living in a tent in some barren wasteland. You go to any village in China, and you can see what Negroponte etc. are talking about. People who farm, who have gone to schools and are already educated, but don't really make a whole lot of cash. People who would otherwise be left out in the cold as far as a higher education goes.
THOSE are the people who would benefit from these laptops! Oh, I forgot, you gringos don't know a damn thing about the world, as the only thing you know you get from CNN. To you, the rest of the world is a bunch of Somalians living under a tent in some dry field. Well how about using some of that cash of yours and go out and visit the world. And I'm not talking about getting drunk in a Cancun hotel room.
Infact, alot of the people working in hotels in poor countries could really use a laptop, but can't afford one. They already have an income and plenty of food, would they sell it for food?
Oh great, an Islander to ask a question I always wanted to ask:
How are the internet connections there? Do they go through space or under the sea or what? And how fast is it? I mean your island IS in the middle of nowhere.
Iceland might be a small island with a pithly 200 000 people and super-expensive beer, but they sure have plenty of energy. No wonder they do energy intensive things like process aluminum and grow lots of vegies in greenhouses.
You know, you are correct. Real war truly sucks. The problem is, most of the people on Slashdot have no idea how much it sucks.
The problem is, they don't show any of this on television. Check out for instance John Simpsons report from Kudistan during the beginning of the Iraq war. They were in a Peshmerga/US special forces convoy and got hit by friendly fire. The whole thing was a huge mess, really bloody, and yet an incident hardly worth mentioning, except that there were reporters there. He caught the whole thing on film.
I don't think anyone on Slashdot would find being in that situation terribly cool or fun.
But since everything in the shops (plus rent etc) costs about the same is here IN RELATION to that nickle, you can have quite a good standard of living. Or if you get bored with working, you could go back to your hut in the countryside and tend pigs for zero an hour.
Well, they can do that already indefinetly. That dirty bomber guy has been in jail for three years and only now got to court. He is a US citizen. So another words the government can already keep you in jail for atleast 3 years without trial.
No, I agree, I think they should ditch the shuttle because it is expensive and a waste of effort. Soyuz would be much better. And yes, the shuttle is inherently dangerous because of its design. There is no escape rocket like with the Soyuz.
But I still think spaceflight should be recognised as a dangerous endevour and though deaths should not be taken lightly, we should push on despite setbacks.
To continue the "why not just use a real mule" line from the "Robotic Pack Mule" -story:
Why not use href="http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=2858">real insects like DARPA is trying to do. Makes more sense to me.
"Repeat after me: "Correlation does not equal causation."
Okay:
Just because global temperatures are rising, does not mean that global warming exists.
I actually find this really surprising!
I mean, simply all these extreme weather events we've had should have some meaning to people. These are very concrete things.

Actually, police budgets are way high. Perhaps the sticking point is lack of recruits. They had to lower standards you know.
Go to IKEA, buy the sturdiest, nicest looking normal sized kitchen table you can find.
Nuff said.

Oh, so now OBL has WMD's as well?! What kind of crazy "You get a WMD! You get a WMD! You get a WMD!" Oprah episode is this.
First Iraq, then Iran, now Osama?!? Jeezus!

The habit can't be stopped, easily, but has no detrimental effect on a person's health.
As far as effect on life, well, that depends. If one is able to receive a clean free supply of heroin, it probably has no effect on their life either.
Your description was a bit confusing, but I do agree with you in that it really isn't that difficult. You only have to do it a few times to get the hang of it.

That aint no troll!

They might be beautiful, but there are only 150 thousand of them, so not many to choose from.
I wonder if Islanders just take what they can get when it comes to mating?

Wouldn't want to live there tho.

Oh great, a ponzi scheme but with ideas.
Most slashdotters don't know a damn thing about China. It is like listening to a bunch of humanities students talking about computers.
"Man, I just re-formatted my processor because I got a virus or a bug or something in my window."
"Yeah I know, you should use that linux-program I heard it really zaps those bugs!"

The Origami is HUGE!
How could anything that BIG and HUMONGOUS ever make it on the market today?!?!
Infact, the Origami is so MONSTOROUSLY BIG that it was big two years ago!
And, no, I don't car if its a gaming PDA/phone or not, since its so big, I wouldn't want one no matter what it does.
Well, okay, maybe you could hide behind it while your friends look for you, that counts as a game, right?
