  1. Re:Good effort, wrong direction on Computer Buying Experiences at B&M Stores · · Score: 1

"ANY GENERIC RETAIL SALESFORCE IS CLUELESS! This holds for kitchen appliances (Target), or power tools (Home Depot), bicycles, televisions, etc. I re-realized this when I was shopping for a table saw: The Home Depot doesn't know shit

I have noticed this years ago. It seems in the "good old days" when you went to a store, the salespeople actually knew something about the stuff they were selling.

Today, if I go to a high volume store, I simply grab what I need according to research I did earlier and don't bother even talking to the people working there. They aren't bad people, just useless to me :)

But consumers aren't stupid, they do some reasearch. So what appliance makers do, is they agree on a certain set of figures that they can throw around to indicate "which appliance is the best". For instance, vacuum cleaners are sold according to how powerful they are, marked in hundreds or thousands of watts. This of course has nothing to do with how good the vacuum cleaner really is, but a consumer can go to the store, and compare how many watts he can get for what amount of money, and try to go with the highest number of watts (or is that "wats"?).

The same applies, of course to computers and many other appliences.

I agree, the studies are flawed. However, no-one has been able to show that moderate alcohol use is HARMFUL either. And as the effect of alcohol is decidedly beneficial, in that it causes a person to relax, open up, I would say that makes moderate alcohol use a very good thing.

And I ask again, how is being permissive towards the use of alcohol, sex or even drug use a problem? Alcohol can be used in moderation, sex can be safe when using condoms and some drugs can be perfectly safe when used in moderation, so safe, that many are prescribed by doctors!

This research is like saying "reading books about food will make people hungry" or "reading a wine tasting magazine will make people more permissive towards alcohol use". Geez!

Yes, this is what most people don't get about China, simply because they have not visited. The US is very centrally controlled. What is set as policy becomes real.

This can be good or bad depending on the situation, but it does not a horrible autocratic dictatorship make.

I can tell you what happens. My girlfriend works at company where they have several different passwords for several different purpose made programs that they use daily.

The passwords can't be all the same, they have to contain numbers and enough letter, and they have to be changed periodically. And the changes have to be more than just one or two (or even three, I think) digits.

You would think this would make the system incredibly safe. Unfortunately, because of the number of passwords, nobody can remember any of them and everyone is totally confused!

So they just end up writing the passwords on paper and hiding the note under the blotter.

So there, whover has designed their "incredibly secure" system has just made it incredibly insecure simply by making it too complicated.

    2. "Advertising" as an industry will basically keel over and die, because products will eventually reach a point at which they will stand or fall on their own merits. This I think is an interesting point, as there is a Spanish clothing retailer called Zara that is a huge success story and is continuing to grow and make tons of money. The interesting part? Zara has never run an ad-campaign!
