I think the problem here is a cultural misundestanding. You see, burqas or women coverin their face, not working and being second class citizens is a part of tribal or nomadic culture in the middle east, just like those were part of the culture in many other ancient cultures. Islam and what the quran say are only used to legitimize these traditions.
I think the brakedown of society leads peole to embrace old customs. It can be seen everywhere, modernizing and wealth usually lead to a liberalization of customs no matter what the religion of that culture.
I think the link to going back to old fashioned concervatism and the brakedown of society can even be seen in the United States.
This is because aljazeera.com is the website for alJazeera magazine. It is not affiliated with the Middle Eastern news network Aljazeera whose website is aljazeera.net.
From aljazeera.com:
"About Aljazeera.com Aljazeera Publishing owns and operates Aljazeera.com, bringing you the world today. Aljazeera Publishing is an independent media organisation established for more than 12 years delivering news and analysis to readers all over the world. Aljazeera.com has a particular focus on events and issues in the Middle East covering major developments presenting facts as they happen.
Important note: Aljazeera Publishing and Aljazeera.com are not associated with the controversial Arabic Satellite Channel known as Jazeera Space Channel TV station whose website is Aljazeera.net."
That is exactly what Rumsfeld wants. White propaganda. I mean, the Pentagon defended the Iraqi story plant thing by saying "everything we say is true".
So another words, say me and a bunch of troops brake down your door at 2am, shoot your father, tear up the place and take you to a horrible prison for six months and later releace you. You learn that they were looking for terrorists and real sorry for your father and gave your children some rations before they left, then Rumsfeld could say:
"We are helping the Iraqi people by fighting terrorists and feeding the Iraqi children."
Nothing he said was untrue, but your father is dead, you were in prison for six months and someone came into your house and busted the place up.
If some Iraqis came and busted up my house in the middle of the night and took me to prison, I know I'd have an IED with their name on it. Once I got out of prison that is....... unless I was involved in some kind of weird human pyramid shit while I was there and came back home packed in ice.
I for one see the debate about wether humans are the cause of global warming as totally irrelevant and a waste of breath.
You see, the fact of the matter is, that:
a) global warming is happening
b) oil is a finite resource
Another words, these two facts alone dictate that we should prepare for global warming prudently. Crops will fail and low lying areas flood. We will have more extreme weather and bad things will happen. We need to consider what will happen when millions are displaced and we need to figure out a way to feed them.
Since oil is finite and probably will be harder and more difficult to extract every year, we should be cutting back on fossil fuel usage. Simply because that way we will have more of it around for a longer time. It is called being smart.
Unfortunately right now, it seems doing these two things is politcally, and perhaps more importantly, economically impossible.
I agree, this is a big problem that I have considered as well. The problem of course is that there is no standard.
I was however encouraged once when visiting a high tech summer house located off the coast. Though there was no electricity, they had a rather ingenious power system. A small windmill attached to a battery powered DC haloge lights throughout the compound, with cooking provided by gas and heting with wood.
It got me thinking, wouldn't having a low power DC system be rather energy efficient? Lighting and electronics with standardised DC, cooking with a 220AC and heating, well, oil or district.
I keep hearing about them cracking down on internet cafes, but last time I visited they were just as plentiful.
Sure, some websites don't work (replaced by advertisements, funny, and says alot about modern China) and they have official licenses posted up, but atleast the internet works. And cheap too. For a few bucks you can surf all day.
My impression from outside of China is of a kind of dystopia where the information police patrol for thougth criminals. However, within China I never had any problem getting news and information about what is going on in the world. Infact, I usually feel way more out of touch with the rest of the world when I visit the US.
I think biofuels are FINALLY a realistic opening in the search for a oil-less way of transportation. After years of BS and dead ends with electric vehicles, hydrogen cars and whatnot, we finally have something that will use existing infrastructure and technology.
The only problem is, this will put the oil companies out of business. Seeing as oil companies have way more money than say, farmers (who look to benefit) and seeing as alot of money has been put into securing middle east oilfields, I don't see much shift in energy policy on this front in the near future. Atleast not in the US.
I mean, leaded gasoline became the industry standard instead of the equivalent of gasolinen with 10% ethanol, because the oil companies would have sold 10% less oil for chrissakes!
Hasn't the Australian government had intern camps for non residents for years now? Barbed wire ringed camps out in the desert for concentrating illegals in the same place?
Riots caused by unions was a government perpetrated myth from the eighties.
I think there is a broad problem with people in the IT industry not being part of organized labour. It seems that programmers and the like "should be happy to be working where they are" and shut up and not complain if they have to work crazy overtime hours.
I think organized labour is a part of a healthy job market. Not having labour organizations is like a market where the buyer or seller has a monopoly on goods, that is not a good situation, though it is always the goal of a business to end up in that situations.
Hence the inherit negativity towards labour organizations by companies. They are after all ending up moving profit to those who actually do the work.
Yes, I agree, the Shuttle-C is a nice idea. I say go for Shuttle-C right now, or then just buy services from the Russians and re-succitate Energia. Buying from the Russians would be kind of a cultural embarrasament though.
This might be classified as hindsight, but NASA has FORSEEABLY painted itself into a corner. The ISS is going to fail without the shuttle, yet NASA (or those that set policy for NASA) procrastinated with building a replacement for the shuttle for years and years. Now the Shuttle has been bleeding NASA dry, yet they can't abandon it without losing the ISS. Talk about being between a rock and a hard place.
They really need to make some hard choices. One possibility would be the diverting of funds to find out how to assemble the ISS with existing hardware, mainly Russian, as they are the only ones with heavy lift vehicles, though this might be very difficult. Another might be to try to reconfigure the shuttle platform as a heavy lift vehicle, thought that would take time and the ISS would be on hold. Of course the ISS is on hold now too...
The problem with the shuttle is, that a tremendous amount of energy is used to lift not only the required ISS part, but also a heavy hunk of 70's junk covered in tiles. This is not a smart way of lifting things into orbit.
I'm sorry, but NASA really needs to find a way to ditch the shuttle real soon. Considering the fact that the new Federal budget gives no hope of fixing the huge deficit, NASA money might be harder to come by in the near future, even thought they did get their money this time around.
I wonder if the money will still be there, as the new budget proposal is NOT going to fix the federal deficit. At some point, NASA too will start hurting and when that happens, everything is going out the window. Right now, things are looking really bad. This years budget is set, but it is the long term financing that will lead to trips to the moon and further. That is in danger.
Right now the whole federal budget is running on money borrowed from China.
Another thing sucking the lifeblood out of NASA is the Space Shuttle that should have been retired ages ago and a replacement sought. Of course, now they can't do that if they want to keep the ISS. So by procrastinating they painted themselves into a forseeable corner -leading to them not having enough money to do anything of value.
"The V600 I owned could only store 30 SMS msgs which was infuriating!"
This also true with RAZR, though I haven't had any crashes. I think this is not really a UI or GUI issue so much as just being kinda stoopid.
But I like other aspects of the RAZR, just beautiful hardware, gotta love that thin metal case. Wish more phones were made with such fine quality exterriors.
I think the problem not understood by the blogging developer is, that it is MUCH BETTER to have unrealized potential at launch than to use up all your potential in the beginning. If the lifespan of the PS3 is 5+ years, then gamers will want nicer and better titles every year on the same hardware they have had for all that time. That can be achieved by squeezing more out of the hardware.
So I don't see a disaster here, infact, this probably suits Sonys aims quite well.
I think the problem here is a cultural misundestanding. Embarrasing, I know.
Frankly, I think watches are kinda old hat.
Cell phones have clocks on them, why would you want to carry two time pieces on you?

I think we're screwed.
I understand. Having no sense of humor can be troubling at times, but I'm sure you will learn to live with it.
Yes, I agree, games should always be excellent.
You wouldn't rape your grand mother, so why would you TiVo?
Remeber kids, piracy is a crime!
I usually prefer a good California Pinot Noir when I'm multitasting.

Sounds good to me!
If everyone would hitchike, we wouldn't need cars anymore.
I keep hearing about them cracking down on internet cafes, but last time I visited they were just as plentiful.

I guess this is the kind of reasoning that let other countries in history get away with similar things.
Not that I'd be evoking Godwin's law or anything...
Hasn't the Australian government had intern camps for non residents for years now? Barbed wire ringed camps out in the desert for concentrating illegals in the same place?
I haven't heard of those for a few years now.
You wouldn't rape your grandmother. Why would you TiVo?
Remember, piracy is a CRIME!
I'll kill myself if you will.
This would be usefull as an alternative for the PASS card that most Americans will eventually have to get.
Oh, no ulterior motive, it is simply easier that way. You see, if you have the chip, you won't need a safety check.
