I'd be curious to see a comparison of the two, looking at the actual output as well as how "easy" it is to actually -open/read- and not just "export" ODF...
For better or worse, at least -someone- is trying to make inroads towards interopability/convenience with ODF. As usual with probably-the-best-way-to-go-but-unpopular-since-it -isnt-microsoft technologies lately, that someone just happens to be Sun. Again...
Who said evolution selected for it? Not -every- trait of a species is a result of survival evolution, if it was we wouldnt have -any- features which didnt directly relate to our survival (appendix, toenails, etc)
I'd wager that one more informed than I could argue that some elephants have higher intelligence potential than some humans. Whales too, perhaps? The issue is, thier physical form doesnt allow them to -DO- anything WITH that intelligence... we got lucky with our opposable thumbs....
"based on windows 2k3 server"... so the target users will think "ok, it wont lock down my content like vista will".... but unbeknownst to them, will have (as usual) more than its share of "critical" fixes neccessitating a service pack in the first 8 months. A service pack that just happens to "upgrade" you to vista-style DRM shit and lock-down existing files.
Either call the EPA and get them to declare a superfund site in your compost pile, or use it as fuel in home-brew nuclear fusion experiments. The end results will likely be simmilar. I'm told its also a good substitute for bathroom grout.
I'm with microsoft on this one. I'm the IT guy for a medium size company, and when we get a new windows laptop its a tradeoff between the time it takes to reinstall and hunt down all the drivers, and the time it takes to skim the pork out of the crap the OEM preinstalled for you (sometimes only to find out that all the BS cant be cleanly removed all the way and having to break out the windows CDs anyway....).
I completely agree with MS' standpoint on this one, however I dont really agree-or-disagree with their reasons for it.
Ive tried some linux desktops here at the company I work for, and the single biggest "how do I?" I get is users asking how to drag and drop between disconnected applications.
For example, user using thunderbird for email and KDE desktop... wonders why they cant drag'n'drop the icon in thunderbird which represents an email attachment onto thier desktop and have it copy the file "like outlook does". (Yes, I know that tbird cant even do that on the windows platform..:-/ )
When I explain that thier desktop is disconnected from thier mail application, or thier IM client, or whatever else I get hit with "but.. drag and drop has been around since the old mac stuff in the 80s? why cant they do it?"
-I- understand the logic of the *nix userland paradigm, but my users dont... and they dont care... they just want to drag'n'drop a movie clip into the body of an email, and have it work. It doesnt matter if they really shouldnt be doing that, its what they want.
Until all that BS "works" like they expect it too, the most I expect to get from end users is "yeah its neat, but I dont think I can get used too it"
Its not just risc vs cisc... the whole x86 system is based around resource-fumbling bus sybsystems. When you get down to it, the whole motto of x86 really could be "get in line, and wait".. its 1970s era crap.
The fact that the CPU now runs at 324236GHz and can chew the math nice and fast doesnt alter the fact that the -rest- of the system (A20 gateway stuck on the KB controller and such.. ahem..) deserves to go the way of Wang...
I've always been a fan of systems like MIPS and Ultrasparc: Engineered right the first time...

Kindof like the crusades you mean? Or abortion clinic bombers? There are nutjobs from every religion, and all the Muslims I know are caring people just like the majority of non-Muslims I know.
Stuff like UI-isms (paperclips, ribbons, hiding the file menu, etc) isnt "innovation".... Stuff like Dtrace , TCP/IP, xml,.. THAT is innovation. Lets have MS give us some real innovation, you know - stuff that wont just change "the way things are done" inside of thier own software ecosystem.

Is $RANDOM-NON-GUERILLA-GROUP failing to fight for freedom? Maybe they are, but so what?

Just swallow the pride and buy a few Soyuz .... too bad its built in the wrong congressional district .... :-(
So how do I get an email addy at one of those 3 million .su domains ?
I say we submit the lowest-karma-rated slashdot account as the best tech writer ..... :-)

You understood perfectly :-)
Are gnome and KDE -really- the only choices? XFCE? ICEwm? Hell, CDE even?! ... or dare I suggest ... Bash ?
