Indeed. Gimli was supposed to be a heroic figure, not a comic relief.

    > No humanity in the characters and dialogue. The movies just don't enjoy themselves. The first one had a mixture of humor and joy and was just having fun with what it could do. That's why things like the lobby scene kicked so much ass. It was like, "We've smashed the barriers of physics, now lets see what we can do with it!" And you had the fun human moments like the discussion during breakfast, the Cipher character, and so on. Neo was just a normal computer programmer who discovered the world around him wasn't real. More importantly, the movie was FUN.

One of the reasons I enjoy watching "Farscape" reruns.
The series mostly manages to find a delicate balance between serious ideas and tongue-in-cheek presentation. And not having somebody else's regurgitated ideas of morals and ethics shoved down your throat (die ST:Voyager, die!) also does wonders to the fun factor.

    * No effective individual rights and freedoms - sure they may still be in the books and, nominally, you'll still be living in "the land of the free" but this freedom will be directly proportional to your resources (see previous point).

    * No power to individuals - you will not be able to influence the decision making process, even "voting" will become meaningless.

    1) See this message: "We helped Trillian awhile back connect to Yahoo when they changed the protocol. They're returning the favor. We have a good relationship with the Trillian people."

    2) The "phone home" misfeature does not mean that Cerulean studios are "evil", just misguided.

  18. Trillian phones home on Yahoo Restored in Some IM Clients · · Score: 5, Interesting

FYI: Trillian 2.0 Pro tries to authenticate the user over the internet and refuses to work if it cannot contact the Cerulean Studios servers.

This misfeature originally appeared in the beta and we (the users) were led to believe (in the forums) that it will not make it into the final release. Guess what, it did.

This creates problems with users behind corporate firewalls, those running local servers on intranets, etc. It makes Trillian vulnerable to DOS attacks on a single source and in general is a pain (for example, on my machine it starts and tries to connect before the SW firewall finishes loading).

While "patches" for this behaviour are widely available (no, I will not link to one, use your favourite "crack search" site then contemplate the fallacy of "copy protection"), I see it more as a trust issue.
Cerulean Studios doesn't trust me (a paying customer) and, after that stunt, I have a hard time trusting them.

Therefore, I am no longer recommending Trillian to anyone. Rather, I urge people to look at the available alternatives (Gaim, Easy Message, AYTTM and others).

Hmmm... Can anyone take it upon themselves to compile a comparison between the available multiprotocol IM clients?

Congratulations, you have been successfully brainwashed by the perpetuators of the 2-party system.

This is a classic circular argument: Don't vote independent because not enough people vote independent...

Now think what may happen if you do vote for an independent representative and also go out and persuade 10 people to do the same? What happens when each of those 10 people persuades 10 others? What happens when this goes long enough to build a critical voter mass?

The real issue is that the imaginary differences between the Republicans and Democrats give the people a false feeling of having a choice when, in fact, they don't.

The Simpsons, in the "Treehouse of Horror VII" episode, said it much better than me:
Kang: The politics of failure have failed. We need to make them work again. Tomorrow, when you are sealed in the voting cubicle, vote for me, Senator Ka... Bob Dole.

Homer: America, take a good look at your beloved candidates. They're nothing but hideous space reptiles.

unmasks them. audience gasps in terror

Kodos: It's true, we are aliens. But what are you going to do about it? It's a two-party system; you have to vote for one of us.

    murmurs

    Man1: He's right, this is a two-party system.

    Man2: Well, I believe I'll vote for a third-party candidate.

Kang: Go ahead, throw your vote away.

Kang and Kodos laugh out loud. Ross Perot smashes his "Perot 96" hat

The next day, Kodos announces the result: "All hail, President Kang."

The field in front of the Capitol has now become a working ground where humans are whipped by aliens and used to carry materials. The Simpsons family is working too, with Homer and the kids carrying wood, and Marge pushing a wheelbarrow of cinderblocks - with Maggie on top.

Marge: I don't understand why we have to build a ray gun to aim at a planet I never even heard of.

Homer: Don't blame me, I voted for Kodos.
