  1. I get it but... on 'Star Wars' Actress Carrie Fisher 'Stable' After In-Flight Heart Attack (abc7news.com) · · Score: 0, Offtopic

I feel like society really has it's priorities out of order. So many people are concerned for an actress while people in their own nations are homeless and getting neither proper nutrition nor appropriate medical treatment. To top it all off, they are shunned, scorned and accused of simply being lazy.

However, I understand celebrity (especially sci-fi centric celebrity) has it's appeal but if we want to talk about it, we should talk about the most likely cause: heart disease. It is the most common killer of people (in the US) and while the cause is seemingly mysterious, it's quite well known it's because of the amount of meat we consume. Meals shouldn't have more than 10% of meat but various industries have changed it so that it seems like it should be 80%. The overconsumption of meat is killing millions of people and I'm sure Carrie Fisher will become one of them soon enough.

Wake up, society! You've got it all wrong!

  7. What I want is an arm mounted computer that is thin and flexible like a cloth yet stays in the perfect adhered to your arm and never runs out of power. What you want is a toy.

  8. Smartwatches have a huge potential but there are significant issues that need to be addressed first.

The first problem is the screen: it takes too much power, it's far too small, doesn't harvest energy from ambient light and can only flex two dimensions at once.
The second problem is the CPU: it takes about 1000x more power than it should and isn't even stateful. QCA based CPUs would solve these issues.
The third is the wristband: it doesn't keep the watch perfectly in place and it's quite the bother. Have the back of the watch exploit van der Waals forces and that should solve it.

So yeah, the only thing Google really needs to do is improve display, electronics and manufacturing processes. If Google really presses their engineers then they could have a sweet prototype ready for CES 2047! ;)

  9. With good reason! on A Record High of 455 Scripted TV Shows Aired in 2016 (vulture.com) · · Score: 3, Insightful

The basic issue is there is a war being waged between media companies. The basic issue is that old media companies like the fat checks they get from cable providers but new online services cannot afford to write said fat checks. The result is that online services began creating their own content because it was much cheaper than licensing it. When there was some exclusive hits like on Netflix, old media decided they needed to quash the rebellion by putting out something that is equally as attractive to avoid people jumping ship. Both sides are upping their game so that customers won't be tempted to switch media providers and thus the media company war.

The funny thing is, the old media companies could have avoided all of this if their demands weren't so unreasonable.

petroleum has some pretty nifty properties besides energy production that I'd really love to keep having easy access to. Like, cheap plastics.

Unfortunately, petroleum based plastics do not degrade fast enough, they just break into smaller pieces and eventually end up in the ecosystem. The pacific plastic soup is proof of this. A much better plan is to switch over completely to bioplastics which actually do degrade.

Burning it for energy is kinda like using our limited helium reserves for toy balloons.

It should be noted that less than 0.001% of helium used is actually used for recreation and it can be re-harvested from the atmosphere if we really wanted to get it back.

They now face the problem of truthiness which has disproven the fundamental theory behind Google, that feedback loops from users selecting links will correctly identify which information should be returned.
