    when the US and the rest of the world loses collective interest in the middle east?

    It's not just the middle east but they are going to be the ones hit the hardest. The answer is that there will be a shift in power and it will ultimately have a positive and stabilizing effect. However, the resettlement of power can sometimes turn very ugly with events like civil wars and genocides. The faster the world abandon's their oil supply, the shorter and more tumultuous the transition period will be. Their economies are going to stagnate if they haven't invested in an educated populous.

    TL;DR: a lot of people are probably going to die but the region will end up being more like Europe.

    That's because the criminal system only seeks to separate the criminal from the rest of society.

    Even crimes are classified differently based on the amount of money taken. IANAL but as far as I know, everything over $10K is viewed as the same level of crime. I find that to be an oddity. Wouldn't it make more sense to view the severity of the crime as being proportional to the amount of money taken?

    There are definitely disparities in the law.

    Just because someone is going to make some shitty systems that might as well be bombs doesn't mean we should start investing tens of billions into creating the smartest most lethal autonomous system because we think we can control it. The Chinese government already compromised and stole everything they need to build their own F35s, do you really want to tempt them with a killing machine with unwavering loyalty and a complete absence of conscious? We already know how they roll, they will sell weapons to anyone that will pay. Do you really want to add automated killing machines to that list?

    What I find so very interesting is that the judicial system doesn't seem to equate the overall amount of economic damage as being the same as if done to a single individual. Basically, you give everyone on the planet a paper cut and get a slap on the wrist but if you give one person 7 million paper cuts then it's somehow worse despite being far less damaging by three orders of magnitude.

I won't just stand here and proclaim that javascript is the largest collective waste of human effort in history since it's gone from novelty to serious security threat, I use a chair like a normal person. Anyway, javascript was neat but now it's a threat and it needs to be stopped. The good news is that CSS3 is very advanced and with a few tweaks to HTML we could provide all the modern functionality for webpages without a single script tag. It's too bad it won't happen because large companies have a vested interest in being able to track you endlessly.

    You would balk if you saw how many of the "top companies in America" don't give 2 shits about security, outside of whatever the latest CNN scare story is. I personally find it amazing how some of these corporations will spend tens of thousands of dollars on fancy security equipment.... that they never bother to actually configure.

    You can show your C-levels the lock and hand them the key, but you can't make them set the latch.

    Absolutely! Except there is going to come a point in time where a concerted effort by a small nation-state sponsored groups will be able to completely destroy corporate giants overnight. When they see empires around them begin to fall they will either start caring or become a casualty of cyberwarfare.

    With the exception of a handful of cars driving about, this is an unproven technology. So when one here about Telsa "autopilot" plowing into the side of a truck without even slowing down, it gives one pause. I agree that they aren't the same technology but this isn't about tech savvy people. Consumer technology has become "fuck the customers, they're our beta testers" so more than a few people are concerned about the possibility of cars suddenly veering and shoving them off the road or driving off a bridge.

    Apple Maps is a good example of to minor errors causing major malfunctions.

    Use AMD chips because they actually are immune to Meltdown and have already mitigated Spectre at the Microcode and OS level with a negligible impact on performance. Intel has yet to get their shit together and it's performance impact is growing with every new patch.

    This is an update to microcode which fundamentally modifies the behavior of the instructions within a processor. You could argue that it's just a specific type of firmware but if that's the case then call it by title it's been given! It's not like this is a website for non-technical people.
