Not true. I picked up two NEC SATA DVD burners (with the full array of format support) for £20 a pop. Work great, and that was some time ago. Scan actually have a section on SATA DVD burners.
Whenever a Mario game comes out, we get articles on how Nintendo are pushing the same thing again, and have nothing new.
Whenever one doesn't, they are neglecting their roots.
You can never win, can you?
For the record, I don't have a Wii because of the lack of games I can see myself playing. Frankly, The only games I have played recently are Rainbow 6 Vegas for my 360 and UT2004 for my PC.
I can remember my home phone number, because I call it when away from home. On the other hand, my own mobile number, I have no idea. I send a vCard over when someone asks for the number. Frankly, I never ring it, so why should I remember it.
And yes, So back then, more remembered phone numbers, but They didn't have a mobile phone number. They didn't have other things either, like I memorize DNS servers, IP addresses etc... because I am configuring networks a lot.
Besides, who cares if you can't memorize specific things? That's what tech is good for, I am very good at getting the idea of something, or a concept, and can explain it again - to me, this is far more important.
I'm sorry, since when does the UK lack that much freedom? Last time I checked, you were the ones with Guantanamo bay.
On another note, 90% of our lacks of freedom come from the US due to our Government copying everything you do blindly and killing everything good in the world.
I'm probably gonna get modded badly for this one.
First off, yes, we do get ripped off for everything. It's amazingly annoying. Not only that, we get everything later.
And as for waiting? Why do you have to presume just because I defended against an idiot means I'm a fanboy? Interesting. A fanboy comment would have been this:
OMGWTF LINUX RULZ!!!!!!! WINDOWS SUCKS!!!
I made a civilized argument.
As to 15 year old wannabe hacker? He's not. He's an artist. He tried to fix something electronic by running a magnet over it.
You read what you wanted to believe, put words in my mouth, and then used those against me. Won't hold up.
If I read through... Oh look, I haven't been put back. You never countered my argument. All you have said is maybe it has done what I said. I'm sorry, but you just shot yourself in the foot, and made yourself look stupid.
And on another note, you just said you didn't run Linux, and if the only reason you can come up with not to run it is there are incredibly stupid people, what exactly does that imply?
I'm sorry, but you, sir, are an idiot.
Installing software on Linux is easier than on windows.
In Ubuntu:
Find Adept/Synaptic in the menu -> Search for Whatever -> Look through results and find what suits you -> Click install -> Watch the pretty bar. -> Find the icon in the menu and run the software.
In Windows:
Go on google -> Search for Whatever+Freeware -> Look through hundreds of results, coming across a million shareware programs and adware/spyware infected ones -> Find the installer -> Run it -> Go through the long trailing installation -> Possibly reboot -> Delete the million icons it just made. -> Run the program.
OR
Spend ages walking around a shop (having to drive there) to find a CD you have to spend £40 on.
I have a friend who is 15. Uses the PC for average stuff. He got a PC, Win95, old one from his dad's workplace. I persuaded him to run linux after my number of talking to him. He did it himself of an alternate install CD (Not enough RAM for the live CD) and it went fine. He got it set up, even worked out how to fix his wireless card thanks to google/#ubuntu. He recently informed me he had just installed Ubuntu Studio, to my surprise.
He now would never go back to windows, loves free software.
If he can do it, anyone can.
I have never had a problem burning a CD. Gnomebaker or K3B and it's done. Simple as hell, nothing special - and I even use SATA DVD burners - you'd think that'd cause hassle.
Again, Java support is simple, something like EasyUbuntu or Automatix makes it easier.
And wireless networking is annoying, I'll give you that, but I stand by the response I give everyone. Get a wireless access point. Hook it up via Ethernet, easy to configure, can use it with way more stuff (I use it with a 360, etc...) and it has better range etc... Plus it's not that much more expensive.
I'm sorry, but GNOME is important. I have friends, they will run a GNOME distro, but not a KDE one. KDE is harder, and ugly as hell. Note that I run KDE myself, because the software and configurability is better, but to most end users GNOME is way more attractive and easier to use. GNOME will be the desktop of choice for the linux masses if the day ever comes, KDE will remain the power-users desktop, as far as I can see.
I stopped reading Nintendo Official Magazine for this reason. Well, that and I stopped being that interested in Nintendo products (good ideas, badly implemented). They used to be very fair, I remember a review for a GBA game where they gave it 5% and bashed it to hell... then went on to offer it as a prise in a competition later on. Then they just started bashing anything Xbox/PlayStation and giving everything great marks.
Easiest way. Store all of your data on a modded Xbox, Ipod, or suchlike. They have the right paperwork to take your PC, but not that. Then you can go and burn your xbox as you please. You are doing nothing wrong by doing so. Old console you wanted to get rid of. I doubt they would even think of checking such a thing. You could even mod it, then unmod it so you can't access the data natively.
I can watch movies. I can do everything I could under windows except play a million games. The only game I did play was UT2004, which actually has a linux port, so It does work better for me,
That is besides the point.
Yes, we have some Gun crime, but due to our laws, a hell of a lot less than the USA. Hence banning guns is the right way to reduce gun crime.
I am a perfectionist, I don't believe in guns, cigarettes, the death penalty, etc... But it's proven that giving everyone guns increases gun crime, giving everyone cigarettes decreases life expectancy, and the death penalty is ineffective (after it's abolition in the UK, Murder rates actually went down. Most murders are done on the spur of the moment, and no deterrent works then.) - So why are these things still allowed (all three in the USA, one in the UK)? Because people fight for things that are ridiculous - and thanks to democracy, if everyone is stupid enough to want guns, they are going to give you guns. (Note I'm not calling everyone in the USA stupid, I'm simply making a point that I believe the right to own firearms is stupid.)
Because I really don't feel like spending hundreds of pounds on what I can get, better, for free. That goes for both the OS and the software. For me, Linux works way better than windows ever did.
I must say, I will *allways* buy nVidia until ATI shape up their Linux drivers. Twinview makes dual monitors as easy in Linux as anywhere else, and that is something valuable to me.
But still, ATI cards *are* important - hopefully they mean nVidia will drop the price.
But until then I am happy with my passive 7600GS.
Unlucky?
Damn, M$ end code is bad enough, imagine the testing stuff!

I disagree. I run Ubuntu on my home PC, and know, personally, at least 10 people who do the same. Video Editing Software and games are not essential for home use. 99% of people's average use on a PC is a web browser, and IM client, and e-mail client, and a word processor. Games are not as abundant, true, but I got EVE online working perfectly easily enough through wine at good speeds, UT2004 has a native port, and there is a version of solitaire ready. Depending on what games you play and what PC you have, VMWare/qemu is also an option.
Grant it I'm not a major gamer - but a gamer is *not* the average PC user. And there is some video editing software out there.

Because of source code. All of it is really designed to be done at source, you download the files in the source that have been edited courtesy of SVN, CVS, etc... and then use a makefile to only compile the changed bits.
Or, at least, that's what I gather.
I've always been annoyed by the lack of Synaptic's ability to install packages while other packages are being downloaded - tell me why that is.

I agree with that, #ubuntu is a great channel, and I give thanks to the people in there who have helped me time and time again. (And I have helped a few, gotta keep the cycle going.)
You are missing something, he said they needed to go and learn to do it to become competent. That was the point. Yes, I would be incompetent if I went and did work in another field - so I would expect training on how to do it.
I would honestly laugh if he paid all that money to fly up for a minute and explode.
Seriously though, I wonder what would happen there? No doubt he signed away his safety for it.
