If I ever download a prince song I hereby promise to kill myself in the most disgusting manner possible. So now everyone is happy.
I think the changing of his name to that stupid symbol was a preemptive strike to make his songs hard to download on gnutella. Or a pathetic cry for help. One of those.
Google (which everyone seems to love around here for their good results) is legendary for it's long hours. The reason they have the cafeteria with the ex-"Grateful dead" cook (which IMO is not that great) is cos your going to be spending alot of time there...

It's funny how salon would focus on a total non-issue like this (for christ sake, just turn off cookies) but completely ignore things like Yahoo resetting everyones mail options to opt-in. I guess there wasn't some crank they could quote for that article.
Clearly I was confused about what servlet container JBoss used. I was pretty sure it used to ship with Tomcat but maybe I just got it confused with Enhydra which does.
That having been said, there are alot of infrastructure tools available for Tomcat from Apache. Yes, you have to install them but the whole point is that they are not "the kitchen sink". The whole problem with BEA is that it is huge and bloated. The guy said, "I'm just doing servlets" and for that, JBoss sounds like it is overkill.
Fundamentally, the benefit to using Servlets / JSP is not only platform migration but also being able to use different servlets containers without a rebuild. If you are using JBoss only features (or BEA only features) then you will be locked into that server vendor. If you wanted to switch away from JBoss now could you? If the answer is yes (because all the add-ons are independent of the container) then it would work in ANY servlet container and if not then you are hosed if you need to switch.
There is no one servlet container to rule them all -- you have to be able to migrate easily (without a recompile) or you might as well be using ASP.
The servlet engine used in JBoss is Tomcat. Since he said he didn't need to do EJB (Servlets / JSP only) there is no value in using Tomcat with an EJB server added. That having been said, if I had to actually use EJB for something (shudder) I would use JBoss.
Resin is significantly faster than tomcat. Catalina (Tomcat 4.x) has close the gap somewhat but if they still have a long way to go. OTOH, if cheap / stable is all you need then Catalina is a great way to go. FYI, Resin comes with all the source but is not free. Any of the EJB server will be total overkill and the overhead will soak you. And Websphere (at least the servlet side) is based on Tomcat (as is JBoss).
Those things UPS uses are 2-D barcodes. Scanners for them are somewhat more expensive and less robust. When you are talking about revving all of the point-of-sale terminals in the US, it's a big deal.
I'm not saying that what your saying isn't true. I just don't believe that is has anything to do with anything. If there is ANY lesson to learn from the last few years, it is that people do not operate (either personally or professionally) in anything approaching a rational way. People operate on the principles of greed and fear. Right now we are in the fear state. Sometime later we will be in greed state again. I always snort derisively when stock market "analysts" say that investors have returned to "value" investing (not that the analysts themselves has anything to do with people doing "non-value" investing...).
Two words my friend: American Idol
I've met quite a few people who have written OReilly books (the **whole** book) so this doesn't seem to be the case. YMMV.
Thanks for the heads up on Wrox -- I never bought them anyway, but now at least I have a reason not to...

Might as well send them a cheek swab now so they can clone you...
Especially considering to get the "Designed for Windows 2000 / XP" Logo on your software, you have to have an install that doesn't require a reboot.
And oh yes,
