  1. Old Han isn't Han on Harrison Ford Turned Down Han Solo Role · · Score: 1

Harrison Ford as Han Solo is less fun to watch than he is to remember. For me, it isn't about the actor/character of Han Solo as much as it is the idea of Han Solo as the underdog self-interested yet caring rebel with the sharp wit and cynical outlook that came from a difficult youth. Old Han Solo wouldn't be interesting, but, beyond that, he would break the idea of Han Solo. For my money, Nathan Fillion as Capt. Malcolm 'Mal' Reynolds was a better Han Solo than Harrison Ford ever was.

As complicated as Valve's anti-cheat system is (checking various dlls, etc.) I'm not willing to risk testing my Steam account on Counter-Strike Source until I know for sure I won't get banned for "hacking" because of a bug in the compatibility layer. I can't find any info on this offhand.

  7. Re:Emulation? on Microsoft Clarifies Backward Compatibility Stance · · Score: 2, Interesting

Is the snes really comparable to an Xbox? The super nintendo had very limited hardware and it still took a good while for a decent emulator to come along. We're 15 years out of the release of the SNES now and there are still some things that the best emulators don't do (see Wikipedia on Snes9x). The Xbox is more complex and the games work in quirky ways that make a catch-all solution impossible. That's why you hear about Sony considering putting actual PS2 hardware in the PS3 rather than going the emulation route...

  13. Re:Override? on Intel and Skype Exclude AMD · · Score: 2, Informative

This shouldn't be a complicated issue. I've got a lot of bundled software from old machines that is supposed to install only on HP or Dell computers and I can trick it into installing just by modifying the registry to spoof a Dell/HP/etc. It'll no doubt be harder to spoof an Intel chip than just modifying the registry, but making your hardware lie has a long history in piracy and software hacks in general. A workaround seems inevitable.

  14. doesn't seem wise on Blu-ray Discs Won't Be Cheap · · Score: 3, Interesting

Fully understanding that new/better technology is traditionally more expensive than old/lesser technology, I think this is a poor decision. If the next-gen dvds were marketed at a price closer to that of current-gen dvds, adoption would catch on quicker ("Why not pay $2 more?") and the format war would seem less important. As is, you're paying a huge entry fee to get into one of the two next-gen formats, then getting shafted again in price comparison to current generation dvds. Is the quality worth the extra $10-$15 bucks per dvd AND the price of the player? Not to me; not to many, i would guess.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I know that I would be more willing to adopt a format in speculation of the final winner if the prices weren't so much more than current dvds.
