Googles foray into hardware is hardly a success , and better than 90% of their income comes just from advertising.

    Huh ????

Google is an advertising company. EVERYTHING they do is designed to capture more eyes for adverts.

Google has a huge history of dumped/failed products.

Go ask Google for their search algorithms and you will soon see how "open source" they are.

Because stored whole blood has a finite life expectancy.

A Mass tragedy of the type in Vegas requires large amounts of all blood types in a very short period of time, which wipes out the normal amount that is stored on site.
This means getting in Donors or blood from other areas.

A Synthetic blood is hope to have a long shelf life (years not months) and be universal, suitable for all patients. Which means larger volumes can be stored locally without the worry of date expiration.

A better option that works in other countries is to limit what guns people can own. There is no gun ban, people can own firearms for hunting, target shooting, (no right to kill anyone else though), and hand guns are very restricted. But guess what, no school shootings, no mass shooting (4 or more people) daily, no dictatorial governments (in fact we often have MORE freedom than the USA).

And while you try and become a civilized country, try the metric system, even in the USA I think most of you can count to 10, which is the whole basis of it (Though in some states I hear having more fingers and toes is common, making 12 inches to the foot more logical). :-)

  6. "To say that this volume is surprising is an understatement,"

Yeah bollocks, it's standard practice to try and swamp the opposition with huge volumes of paperwork in the hope that they will miss something important in amongst the irrelevant crap they pushed your way.

And then its also standard practice to complain about this, try and delay proceeding and maximize the billable hours that eventually gets put onto the end consumer as a price increase.

Trump will have started a Nuclear war and you will be dead long before they implement another system.

But the GOOD news is, all the dead people will make the problem much much smaller, saving the (remaining) tax payers billions.
AND the world will be back to the Stone Age anyways so who needs and ID, you will all looking for something to eat, making fires, and sharpening sticks.

  8. What ever they decide, someone will make lots of money

    oh, and it won't work

Which means someone else will also need to make a lot of money, and they will get to blame the last President of the USA.

  9. Thats right and those research grants are competitive . So if you have 2 applications, one has 3 publications in Nature while the other has 10 publications in Nigerian Animal Digest, guess who gets the money.

  10. Almost. Thing is there are cheap publications, however they are generally used by low quality researchers simply to get published .
To get good research grants its not just how often you are published, its WHERE you get published and how many times your work gets quoted thats important. If its in a prestigious publications the chances of it being read and quoted are much much higher

Getting published in Lancet, or Nature or another prestigious journal can make hundreds of thousands of dollars difference to a research groups annual income, and millions of dollars to a University each year. Subscriptions to these for Universities is just another cost of doing business.

  11. The world is more than just the USA.

  12. However the royalties Universities make (world wide) allow funding of other research, especially research that will not lead to large grants or other funding options.

The alternative is that the government will need to massively increase the amount of money available.

Likewise, many research projects are shared between private/public and the rewards are also split. Any loss of patent protection would see that pool of money disappear too.

    So your choices are
    Leave things as they are
    Increase government spending
Raise taxes to pay for research
Reduce research (Which means China etc will soon surpass the USA, so the US will end up paying China etc royalties)
