Kb/mouse (not mine, maybe what I used to use) is $20 (less on sale) & I mentioned not including monitor as the console doesn't include TV. Heck, lots of gamers use their TV, so it's really an optional bit. I also have a moderately high-end scanner and a tablet (for Photoshop), should I have included them too? (OK, admittedly that was a little cheeky, but trust you get my point - these are options & like my 4k monitor, are really not pertinent as consoles can use none of them - not fully, anyway). Really, what I missed (and you should have gotten me on) is the OS. Obviously I'm not comparing gaming in Linux to a console :) As it happens, I actually had a spare Win 7 key but cost of OS might affect someone else's build. If I needed it and had to stay to an $800 budget, gtx 750 (fine card, not enough to do 4k, tho) and 1 a lesser motherboard leaves room for KB/mouse/OS. Sorry for no line breaks, on mobile. Good sig, BTW

I just built this (all but GPU on NewEgg):

    $180 - Second-hand GTX 780ti (from a buddy that just upgraded to the 980ti)
$46 - Corsair Carbide Series SPEC-01 RED LED Black ATX Mid Tower ($10 rebate)
    $75 - CORSAIR CX series CX750M 750W ($20 rebate)
    $120 - GIGABYTE GA-Z170-HD3P (rev. 1.0) ($10 rebate)
    $220 - Intel Core i5-6600 6M Skylake Quad-Core 3.3
    $70 - CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4
    $120 - ADATA Premier SP550 2.5" 480GB SATA III
$831 before / 791 after rebates. I don't include monitor as the console doesn't include TV & to be fair, I am not including KB/mouse as they were moved from old rig to new. Now, I spent well over 1/2 that on my monitor (Dell P2415Q), but even at 4k, I can play every game I own at med-high or better (at decent enough framerates) & all of my games work at Ultra at 1080p.

As always, YMMV, but the new Unreal Tournament Pre-Alpha detected my rig at Ultra everything at 4k and played great.

    TL;DR

You can build a really nice box for $800. If you don't have the option for used (that you trust - you can always find used, but I totally get not wanting one from an unknown source), you could take 1 step back on GPU and game all day long at really nice settings in 1080p.

If changing an SSD and GPU takes a lot of time, PC gaming is not for you. Too bad, despite console game sales being a lot better than they used to be, they still don't compare to Steam sales.

  7. Ha, yeah, I was poking fun at the idea in the context of TapeCutter above:

Astroturf cost about $0,50 per post.

You seem really happy to speak your mind, I don't see you being voice for someone else's (at least not with your account).

By the way, you wouldn't happen to play KoL, would you?

I do now! (I wasn't aware of it, but I Googled it when you asked - Level 3, Accordion Thief).

  8. Wow, assuming you didn't misunderstand my reply to Gojira Shipi-Taro*, I am really sorry for your experience. I've been gaming in Win7 for years using multiple nVidia cards & never had any trouble (other than my GTX 680 not really being up to playing Fallout 4 in 4k - not the card's fault) ... GTX 260 > 680 > 780ti. My Steam library is 292 titles (I happened to look it up this morning), though I have only played about 1/2 or so in Win7 (many are old, many others were part of a bundle). Do you mind if I ask what card you're using?

*(S)He was saying he had to use Win10, I was asking why 10 vs 7 as the only difference I am aware of is DX12 & I didn't consider DX11 to be "the dark ages."

  9. Well, not a business as small as Yelp, anyway.

  10. Duhno, you could only make $25 a day on /. - still, $25 more than you currently get posing to /. ;)

  11. Legitimate question: What games do you (currently) play that you can't play in Win7? I was not aware of any games using DX12 (but I tend to stay slightly behind the curve for things not Fallout).

I recognize I may have to use 10 eventually (hoping they come to their senses with 11, but not holding my breath), but I'm not there yet.

Mark this date, KGIII, you're going to hear me (semi) agree with a talking head at Fox News (are they still a talking head if on the radio?): I'm not generally a fan of lame duck* presidents doing anything too significant in their final days (although he has almost a year left, so it's hard to say if he qualifies yet - hence the 'semi-agree') as they have very little accountability and tend to do things they previously would not have done (pardoning their friends, etc). In this particular case, we have a constitutional law professor*** who seems to have no problem ignoring the constitution when it is convenient for him to do so selecting a SCOTUS ... in an ideal world, I'd prefer to wait for 'the next guy' but as this is not an ideal world (and whoever 'the next guy' is, we're not apt to be doing much better & quite possibly much worse) ... all I can say is ugh.

I can't stand Fox News - and I am quite conservative, both fiscally and socially** - so I don't see myself listening even for amusement, but I almost agree with part of what they said.

    * I suspect you knew the definition of lame duck and were being funny, link was in case I was wrong

** (Warning, I'm going to stray off topic here) Something I have never shared on Slashdot before is that I'm a Mormon. I'm certainly not ashamed of this, but we're not always a very popular group & I've never wanted a troll of my own (though I have read your thoughts on the matter & am no longer concerned if I gain one), so I've previously kept it to myself (no worries, readers, now that I have mentioned it you know - I'm not going to try to convert anyone here :)). Most people know enough about us to know that we tend to be very conservative - and I am no exception - but for me, it is very important that I not seek to legislate my own morality. So while I abstain from alcohol and drugs, I am in favour of legalizing marijuana (for example). I'll likely never take advantage of it's legality (not for recreational use, anyway), but from what I have read, it's less harmful than alcohol & making that illegal didn't go over too well last time :)

You might guess my view on homosexuality (though good chance you'd be wrong - I believe all sexual activity [hetro or otherwise] outside marriage to be wrong), but I feel it is none of the government's (or military's) business. I'd personally like to see the government get out of the business of marriage altogether (and have an analogue that did roughly the same thing re: taxes, benefits, etc) and let consenting adults be consenting adults. While my own Temple marriage to my wife is very precious to me, it's significance is not universally applicable. My sister's (non-LDS) marriage to her husband is equally precious to her. I have friends that were married civilly that likely feel the same way about their marriage (sorry, it has never come up in conversation, but I feel it is safe to say). I'm ok with (well, more than ok, I would vehemently support) a church (any church, not just mine) not performing a ceremony in a way they feel is contrary to their doctrine, but to withhold the legal benefits based on morality? I do not think a thing should have both religious and legal significance (pretty much ever - things like Sharia law are worrisome to me). These are two different applications, let's have two different vehicles (that are not incompatible, so one can avail them selves of either, both or neither).

At the end of the day, I am accountable for my actions and not the actions of others. I don't see morality as necessary in the law past the golden rule as 'my right to swing my fist ends where your nose begins' - not because it's morally wrong for me to strike you (unprovoked, self defense

I have a tracker on every device my family owns (that support it, anyway - all cells, tablets, laptops, desktops). My wife/kids are just as welcome to look up my location at any time (I tend to be in one of 3 places or commuting between, not very exciting) - the thing is, I have to have a reason to look up where a device is. I don't have (or want) logs; where it is now (or 'last seen') is plenty, but it has helped on multiple occasions where a device was misplaced (Beacon works great) or my wife was somewhere she couldn't hear her phone set to silent - I could see she was still there and not missing my call because she was in a wreck on the way home.

Non-consensual monitoring is wrong (except in some extreme cases with minors that I hope to never experience), also 3rd parties monitoring our whereabouts, but for me and my immediate family to be able to see where each other is (are? Some Grammar Nazi please correct me if wrong) at a glance as needed? I don't have a problem with it. I even use Waze when commuting so my wife knows when (typically within a 1-2 minute margin of error - better than I'd generally know in advance & I don't like to use the phone [other than GPS which is usually running with the screen off] while driving) I'll be home for dinner.

Oh, and I'm not the sort that uses Facebook/Twitter/whatever to broadcast every thing I do (or anything, I don't use any of those) - I'm privacy conscious, but my business (largely) is my family's business (and vice-versa). I think the trouble is when people don't view it as a 2-way street.

    Sorry for the novella :)
