    Seriously, though, the makers of the ransomware are criminals. It's not entirely unrealistic to think they're also the type who would DDoS.

    And the DDoS is probably less of a crime than the ransomware.

    All of this assumes that the (in my opinion likely) possibility that the DDoS and ransomware are coming from the same person or people.

  5. In my experience when I messed up and went over 5 GB, I was still connected via LTE. My connection was getting like 64 kbps (or something like that, it was one month over a year ago, so I don't exactly remember the exact speed), though.

    The only phones where the mic is always on are the Moto X, Droid Mini, Droid Ultra, and Droid MAXX. The Nexus 5 is the only phone with the Google Experience Launcher, which only listens when the home screen is on.

    But I wouldn't think the extra few ms of latency would slow the data flow by 95%. In fact, I don't think it'd even be noticeable to the naked eye except for exceptional circumstances like gaming.

    on the two or three occasions I couldn't get a Verizon signal, she has been able to get a good AT&T signal.

    Anecdote time...
    On Amtrak trains between Chicago and Carbondale, IL, Verizon seems to work almost the entire time, whereas all the other carriers have significant coverage dropouts.
    On the other hand, I have issues with my cell phone in my home.

    My first thought was shareware. The only "innovative" thing in this patent is a s/software/operating\ system/. I suspect this patent will be declared "obvious" and nullified if someone challenges it.

    Where I come from, the ads on the receipt are preprinted and only geographically targeted.

    On the other hand, they do have a separate printer that prints out (presumably behaviorally targeted) ads.

    And completely fails in Mobile Safari.
    Also, for what it's worth, the setting seems to be "use beta index" under "index beta settings" on http://news.slashdot.org/help

    The Android Market is far more open than the Apple app market.

    Plus, IIRC, it's possible to distribute Android apps without having to go through their app store.
