"hit play it will rewind just a bit to take care of overshoot"
I moved from a DirecTivo to a Motorola cable DVR and that's one feature that I miss. Tivo's been out a while, but still has features that others haven't caught up with.
that if you don't like the music, you could just erase it and use the card for something else.
I remember years ago when VHS ruled. If you found one in the bargin bin you'd say to yourself, "Well, if this movie isn't any good, I can just record over it."
Trouble is 99% of lawyers give the rest a bad name.

I'll agree that RPG's great if you just want to read in records and them print them out in a report. But try doing any complicated calculations with them first.
And then try doing it without a coding form:-)
"long descriptive variable names and versose operatives" I'd argue the opposite about COBOL. It may help if you haven't seen the code before. But when you work with it everyday it becomes a pain. It's like having to write everything out in longhand instead of using a word processor.

I've programmed in COBOL (I was young and needed the money). It is the most programmer unfriendly language (except for RPG) I've ever used. It has a large installed base which means it will be around for a while. But that doesn't make it a good thing. I've thought about starting a society to discourage its use.
I remember Compute!. It used to be one of my favorite magazines. You can get the content of some of them and other old computer magazines online at http://www.atarimagazines.com/
"Stealing a pack of gum and robbing a bank at gunpoint are both crimes."
You're right. Robbing a bank will just get you money. But stealing gum may get you the last piece you need for your death-ray which allows you to take over the world!
I would study what we were doing in the early 1900s when we trained the generations that took us to the moon (with slide rules!) and designed the bridges and dams we still use today.

Read thedailywft everyday. Don't do any of that.
And don't waste all day reading slashdot.
Wouldn't that be considered a sequel?
"wealthy and powerful Apple"
Wow. There's a phrase you wouldn't have heard a few years ago.

Has anyone else noticed that every six months Mozilla announces that they're working on a mobile browser?
Except that Vista's new driver model was suppose to prevent that.
"six CR2016"
How much did the magazine cost? It may have been worth the price just to get those batteries.

What I want to know is how was Google able to keep this quite until just before the launch? Android was rumored for months before it was announced.

Well, as long as it only throws out the votes from dead voters it should be okay.

It takes 3.14 diameters to go around a circle, so that is a full circle.
I hate Cobol. But I will say that it could be a decent language with some revamping. Things that make it a nightmare:
All variables are global
No parameter passing to functions
The PERFORM keyword is way overloaded
Can't put comments on the same line as code
A for loop looks like this:
PERFORM VARYING X FROM 1 BY 1 UNTIL X = 10
CODE HERE
END-PERFORM

I don't think MS follows their own guidelines. Every time they release a new version of Office, it looks different than all other Windows apps.

I guess we could just ask them nicely to not hit us.
Or perhaps we could move the planet out of the way until it passes.
"resulting in a short circuit"
You mean it came alive and started demanding "input"?

Yeah, but think of all the money he saves on cat food!

Great! Now can we get back to vi vs. emacs.
