  1. Don't forget the time stamps on P2P Defendant Destroys Evidence, Case Defaults · · Score: 1

If one were going to do a wipe then complete reinstall then one must also remember the timestamps on the files.

In a purely theoretical sense one could set their BIOS clock back a good year or so, install there OS, move it forward a few days, install some apps, move forward a few weeks, install some more apps etc. Finally setting the bios clock back to the correct time.

I think the catch would be to not go online as cached web pages may have dates in them (like news articles).

Could anyone tell in this scenario that it was a recent install?

Are sales declining because of anticipation of this?
Will ATI and Nvidia be able to shift large quantities of cards over the next few months, with people like myself waiting for the next (significant) generation?

Aside: Yes, I am aware that these cards will still pack a punch in DirectX10 games, and will not be obsolete over night, but the unified shader/vertex architecture of DirectX10 seems to be a big shift in card design and will offer a lot of features to game desingers, not efficntly do-able on the odler hardware, so you may be stuck with a less good lookign rendering of a new game.

In the sci-fi book "3001" references are made to a period of human history shorty after the roll out of nuclear fusion power stations (no the fission power used today). The near limitless supply of seawater to power the reactors and the cheap reactor designs with little of no waste to dispose of resulted in very, very cheap electricity. As a result everyone consumed as much electricity as they liked and Earth started warming as a direct result of electrical heating.

Something to think about - we can still cause global warming even without the use of fuels that produce emissions.

    So, Slashdotters-
Would it not be adequate and a lot cheaper to buy a 32" HD LCD screen and a mid-range graphics card and do your gaming at approx 1280 x720 on a 32" screen for
What are the Pro's + Con's of doing this (e.g. response time, general desktop use, too low a res for modern game play?)

  10. DejaVu ! Done ~10 years ago with DVD software. on Work Around for New DVD Format Protections · · Score: 1

This is exactly how PC DVD software playback protection was first defeated when DVD's came out. I remember hacks of Playback software that automated pausing the film and doing single frame advances with screen captures.

The resulting frames where then sent straight to an encoder so a compressed version could be generated.

The sound would be interleaved later with the compressed video AVI container by playing back the movie at normal speed and capturing the sound by looping the line out of the sound card into the line in and using a standard audio recorder program.

This was in the few months before the DVD encryption was cracked allowing easier / "pure" digital capture.

It's is very funny to see after years of development that a work around that was used ~10 years ago on PC DVD playback software still works today.

Yes there will be artifacts and noise fromt his method but if you are taking the 20+ Gb MPEG2/4 HD source and compressing to ~4 Gb of MPEG4 then you would be hard pressed to tell which were artifacts of this process compared to a "pure" digital trans-code / conversion.
