There is more to solving crimes than throwing around some fingerprint dust. Certain surfaces do not lend themselves to dusting, perhaps your residence was one such as this, I don't know. And I can not speak to individual agencies. What I will say is the blanket statement in here are immature and and are, at best, inaccurate. Don't know where you are from, but in my home state, police followup of reported crimes is mandated in the State code. As for that pride, most every officer I know takes pride in being a professional and not letting the shit heads get the better of them. If they came to your house and did not dust, there was a reason. I had an approx 60% clearance rate on investigations and an approx 98% conviction rate on charges I placed, so yes, I took pride in that. took pride in the fact he citizens of my community were getting their money's worth. I know there are some POS cops out there, just like there are POS fireman, bankers, milk men, whatever. Before I became a police officer I got a ticket (well deserved) from a State Trooper in VA and he was a real jerk. Talked to me like a dog. Later I found out he was equally unpopular with the other Troopers and that he was just a dick all around. Didn't skew my veiw of the Troopers in VA though, just because I encountered an ass. Some people just don't take the job seriously, or see it as something it is not (TV). Most of the cops out there are decent hard working men and women who want to put in a good days work for their community.

They do want your help, because "anything you say can be used against you", tell them that you will not speak to them without legal representation, and that you would require (the USA version of) legal aid. That calls their bluff: they have to either arrest you for nothing (opening them up to a poor pay review, civil legal action, whatever), or you can't help them. And if they were going to arrest you from the off, they would have done so already.
I guess it depends on how you ask. They can detain you for questioning based only on reasonable suspicion, which they likely would have if they stop you. As for the Miranda decision, that ONLY applies if you are under arrest. Otherwise they can ask you anything without an atty, and have no obligation to provide you with one. There is no bluff because, as I said, they can detain you, question you, determine your involvement or lack thereof. And contrary to TV shoes, not all arrests are made within the officers first 2 minutes on the scene. And I am not sure from whence you hail, but officers here are not subject to poor pay reviews and civil action unless you can show non or malfeasance. Simply arresting someone and then later having to nolle prosequi the charges does not mean they acted in bad faith. Oh sure, you can try to sue, but you likely will get thrown out of court unless you can prove bad faith or malfeasance in some way.
I must say, this street level "How to Deal With Police 101" is rather entertaining. Makes me wonder how many people here have meth labs or grow light arrays in their basements, or how many are habitual offenders out on the highway.
I will grant that there are bad cops, just as there are bad teachers, doctors, nurses, bus drivers, librarians, etc. Get a big enough group and you will find bad apples. But, I have had a few tickets and was even arrested twice on warrants obtain by my ex (later dismissed summarily) and with the exception of one State Trooper giving me a RADAR ticket, EVERY time I had interaction with Police, I was dealt with professionally and courteously. Dealing with police is kinda like posting on/. , what you bring to the situation can determine your standing. The difference is that when you get modded down as a troll by the Police, you can go to jail, so....don't act like a troll.

The officer can stop you and detain you for questioning. He can even frisk you for his safety if he wishes, it's called a Terry Stop (from Terry v Ohio)
Being polite and cooperative can only help you get away faster if you don't want to be there. Act like an ass and enjoy being detained.

The people who give the most grief to the Police, commit the crimes, drive like idiots etc are always bitching about Police States. The ones of us who obey the laws, report crimes, don't speed and don't act like general idiots have a good relationship with the officers in our neighborhoods. I have friends in the local depts and they are just regular guys and girls doing an impossible job. They put in their time, go home to their families, grill out on Sat, watch the ball games, drink beer with their friends and go to church on Sunday (if they are not working that is).
While I do not support this legislation, it is wrong ludicrous to suggest that Police are running rampant and only kept at bay because of video.
Actually, there is a thing called the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics that many agencies incorporate into their Policy. The second l line of it goes like this:
"I will keep my private life unsullied as an example to all; maintain courageous calm in the face of danger, scorn or ridicule; develop self-restraint; and be constantly mindful of the welfare of others. Honest in thought and deed in both my personal and official life, I will be exemplary in obeying the laws of the land and the regulations of my department. Whatever I see or hear of a confidential nature or that is confided to me in my official capacity will be kept ever secret unless revelation is necessary in the performance of my duty."
So yeah, they can penalize her for stuff done off duty.
Actually I agree. And I am FAR from a MS apologist. Fact is they have done MUCH for the computing world. Of course, you could say the same for war and its effect on manufacturing and progress. LOL
