...Please butt out of our domestic politics...

why? the US doesn't butt out of other country's domestic politics. in fact, the US is known to stick it's nose into affairs more often outside the country (and I'm not just talking about wars, either. just look at industry and technology) than in it's own backyard, so there is no valid or valuable reason to say "stay out of our business". it's a classic troll-like "pot calling the kettle black" nonsense.

and don't troll back with a silly "but we bring democracy to the world! it's our job!"... that's bullshit in general, plain and simple. besides, the US is an oligarchy, not a democracy.

only if you think you can survive on a few dollars a day. at the latest exchange rate, 500 Linden dollars is less than $2.00 US.

and it's not only just swinging around a pole letting an automated/scripted animation do all the work. some places actually require you to 'roleplay' (read: typing out long descriptive paragraphs of your sexy moves) in an effort to entertain the on-lookers into giving you more money. oh and don't forget the club you pole-dance in probably gets a cut of your 'earnings'.

better off going into SL Real Estate- buying server land (called 'sims') and re-selling parcels of land. there are several people I know in SL who actually *do* making a real-world living this way.

for me, SL represents two interests: a 3D chatroom, and a fairly decent 3D CAD/CAM/Animation/Physics engine for designing and developing all sorts of things.

Furries are unusually un-thrifty with their money, it seems.

oh it's not the Furries only (in fact they are a minority in SL still)... when a Linden dollar is just pennies to the US dollar, people throw away their cash at anything that looks novel or mildly interesting. or virtually sexy.

years ago i started with a little mouse avatar, jumped on a pole in an empty sports bar (humans-only sign, no-less), went to make lunch and when i returned i had 500 Lindens. i was still clothed, and had 3 messages from badly tanned, waxy-looking brunettes who thought i looked 'cute'.

and i only like the animal avatars because the human ones just suck badly. why would i want to be stuck in the same species as my real life, when i can be anything i want? (i'm mostly an android of some sort when i'm there)

Email, numerous instant messaging systems, a handful of free forum services. heck even twitter in a pinch. and all without the annoying games and adverts. and for the other comments below the 'grow up' post:

    - if people cared, in this day and age, they would make sure new emails get updated and propagated back to those they care about.
    - email *is* different than a group facebook post: 1) not everyone uses facebook, 2) emails to loved ones do not need to include annoying adverts and silly games, 3) email is typically more reliable and controllable (the spate of FB account info privacy problems, for example).
    - 'convenient' does not equate to 'better'
    - as other poster said: "use the right tool for the job."
    - panic in the form of "waaaaa! i can't post!" does no good. spend your time more wisely by having another means of communication ready at hand, ie: email, IMs, Skype, phone, twitter, forums, *postcards*, etc.

Another reason is weather. US weather has more extremes than Europe. There's a reason that all the early colonists from England died of tropical diseases.

erm.. 'weather extremes' related to 'tropical diseases' = pulling silly connections out your ass without a basis of fact.

Being a former American ex-patriot (I escaped the US in 2000), I've lived and traveled quite a lot in Europe over the last 10 years. Aside from the occassional hurricanes or tornadoes, the US does not have any more 'extreme' weather than Europe does. IF you want extremes, try living in Norway/Finland/Sweden/Russia/Africa/India.

I'm quite happy to live in Denmark now. They have developed a very decent infrastructure for cycling, even for the velomobiles and recumbent trikes that I always ride. Heck the US needs to take a cue from Europe in general, in regards to cycling infrastructure.

It was a fairly neat concept,

and still is. I'm not a furry (although i prefer the furry avatars because the humans ones are just plain boring. I mean, seriously, why would i want to play the same species in an environment where i could be anything i want? Typically i'm a little mouse robot). I do use SL often because it's scripting language is not half bad, and useful for teaching a certain level of object-oriented programming and game design, since you *can* (and there are several good examples) make decent games and immersive environments within SL and see immediate results as you develop. oh and i'm not fat, nor live in my parent's basement. i teach website development and game design at a local tech school in Denmark.

while it is easy to portray SL as some fat-persons paradise, the fact is that many people of all shapes and sizes use SL for good and bad, and from around the world. just like real life. it attempts to provide an environment where you can socialize, create/develop/share work, and (as mentioned earlier about famous architecture in SL) as a way of seeing places and interacting in various environments you might otherwise not be able to see due to lack of money or well-being.

regarding this nonsense about free content being removed. there are always other ways of making that content appear. someone will develop a new resource. problem solved. move along now, nothing more to see here.
