Actually, I'm glad that he didn't link to it. I swear, every other story on Slashdot has some comment with a link to XKCD. Hey, we get the jokes. All of us read XKCD. You don't link to a video of Yakov Smirnoff every time you make a Soviet Russia joke, do you?
If Millikan could neutralize the force of Gravity by opposing it with a simple Electromagnetic Force, then Gravity must be a simple Electromagnetic Force of Classical Physics.
Yeah, I can't stand how much harder it is to copy DVDs than VHS tapes, and it sucks that I can't just pop in a DVD and record a TV show like I could with VHS. I don't need none of that fancy DVD technology. Hey, do you happen to know when Avatar is coming out on VHS? I can't wait to go out and buy it. Oh wait...
Sorry, but I don't buy your analysis. Kids these days aren't substituting "real" interaction with electronic. They're augmenting the real with the virtual. I would argue that the average slashdotter, in contrast, is more inclined actually to substitute real socialising with electronic, and has been doing so since the first BBS servers went up.
Sounds like you're not part of the iGeneration, then. I'm extremely intrigued by this concept. Just a month ago, I got into an argument with my younger brother (1992). He bitched at me for not answering every single message he sent me. The conversation might go something like
Him: sup Me: not much, you? Him: same generic dialogue Him: yeah he's a dickhead I chuckle to myself ... 2 minutes later ... Him: DUDE why do you ignore what I'm saying sometimes Me: Huh?
It's almost like their brains translate the instant message conversation into a telephone conversation. I imagine it would be weird if we were on the phone and he said "yeah he's a dick" and I was completely silent.
Oh God, I've just watched book porno. First they show you the parts of the book scanner slowly, like you're undressing it with your eyes. Then, the protruding scanning mechanism rhythmically penetrates the pages of the prone, inviting book. And then, to top it all off, they present to us an unreasonably large book that takes it from the scanner. What porno is complete without an unreasonably large member? I'm sure that there is a librarian somewhere pleasuring herself to this.
Seriously, I just looked up these two pages. Data on various engineers. Scroll down to the "Earnings" section. The lowest 10% of EEs make about $49,120, which is still more than the average master electrician makes.
I hope (and I know this is optimistic) that the mods who modded this jackass as "Insightful" read this comment before any of the others. Over simplification much? Most of the comments here are discussing quality, quantity, private schools, public schools, etc. Even in pointing this out I realise that I'm feeding a troll. I'd like to think you all can see it, too.
(e.g. not borrowing the car again for month or so)
Not borrowing the car? Why are they allowed to borrow the car in the first place? If they want the responsibility to drive themselves around, they should at least be responsible enough to afford their own car and insurance. Something to do with respecting the things that you earn yourself. I can't tell you how many times I've raged at the sight of a 17 year old smart-ass driving around a new Audi A4 that his daddy bought for him. There's no way in hell that kid respected anyone on the road, let alone his parents who gave it to him. And I'm speaking in general here. I know at least one example of this, and having graduated from high school in a wealthy area, I've seen the same story played out ad-nausium.
Please people, don't buy your children their first car. Make them earn it. I mean, when is the last time someone bought you a car, paid for your insurance, and filled it up every Friday with gas?
And you figured that bit out by messing with the programming code and not actually playing through that far, right? Right?
... Hello?

"Tycho's" literary voice is one of my favorites. It flows well and sounds more like ironic Moby Dick than Moby Dick.
At the risk of being modded off-topic, I'm downloading now and plan to seed for as long as I can :)
ssseeeeeeeeeeeeed
That is, by far, the single most interesting comment I have ever read on Slashdot. Thank you for that post.
Reading his past comments, I can't decide whether he is the god of subtle trolling, or if he actually writes like that. That prospect is terrifying.
Hold me.
Considering this was a good analogy, I think your place in the history books is secure :)
Triforce fail
That or you gave him too much time, he got bored with the idea, and forgot about it. You didn't wait more than 4 minutes, did you?
Wiggity-whack?
Makes sense to me. I wish I was that smart :)
Score:-1, Idealist

He just needs an excuse to explain why he is friends with so few people
I think you mean Mulva

In after every slashdot nerd and his dog creatively misinterprets the parent

To where? That's the story at every campus. Besides, if you run anything non-windows, your exempt. At least, that's the policy at my school.

Yes, but the ambiguity instils curiosity, and curiosity brings clicks.
