    let them use a text editor of their choice and explain the commandline compiler to them - if they use it like that or use an IDE is not of your concern then... you could point them to sites of free IDEs and tell them they might want to use an IDE, but you won't tell them how - they have to find out for their own, this is not part of this course

    thats the way we do it at the RWTH-Aachen

    I think most people that stick with ms software do this because they have no clue how to install alternative software (seriously - my family uses PCs for 14 years now and still they call me and ask me how to install this and that software) so make a "worm" that assists you in making your pc more secure (and shows you that you need it at the same time) maybe put in links to small, easy-to-understand "getting started" sites...

    well you know - programming languages can be used BY HACKERS (just yesterday I commented on a similar thing) to write security software! so forbid programming languages...
    operating systems can execute security software... you have to forbid operating systems!
    oh wait - real hackers can write programs directly in asm - they can run them on processors without operating systems! forbid processors!
    all together this means: forbid computers...

    maybe thats the only way to stop politicians from babbling nonsense about computer-related stuff they don't understand...

    some people want to use community-based software, and they get value out of sharing with other people in the community, the reliability coming from hundreds of reviewers that spend more than 8 hours a day on the programs (because of passion) and the dependability that you can see on millions of servers worldwide

    other people want microsoft products

    seriously, I've seen interviews with ex-ms-employees stating that the deadlines forced them to leave bugs unfixed
    so a commercial software model, that needs deadlines because of the needed income, forcing programmers to leave bugs unfixed is more reliable than a software model that has no deadlines and hundreds of reviewers? I don't think so...

    just like they needed the iraq war?

    lets face it - politicians have found out they can sell ANYTHING to the people by telling them it was needed for fighting terrorism (just a few weeks ago I read on /. about a guy who claimed DRM was needed to fight terror)

    scared people are illogical, they just beleive anything you tell them, so politicians scare people with the word "terror" and then tell them "vote for me - I'll save you"

    now since "terror" means "fear" translated from latin, and politicians make you afraid on purpose, I think it's adequate to say
    politicians are terrorists - abolish software patents to fight them!

    I think google is the wrong adress to file a lawsuit against... it just shows you, which results were most often visited/searched in connection with this keyword...

    this gives me an idea... I'll patend terminating turing machines... and if google has a link to a site containing a turing machine in their search result, they must find out if it ever terminates and filter it out if it does or they infringe the patent...

    maybe I'd use this patent only against msn ;)

    does that mean it overheats five times faster or does that mean apple sues people five times faster who point such disadvantages out publicly?

    well I've also seen video footage on crysis, which blows your mind... and I didn't find the killzone 2 screenshots that great... the texture-quality reminds me to 2002... HL2 already had better...

    it might be true, that you have to update PC hardware more or less often, but I think this is really worth it - I have everything with it... multimedia, games, internet, office, graphic editing and especially: programming languages and math tools - as a computer scientist I need decent hardware anyways and software that just doesn't exist for game-consoles... how should I print 300 page lecture notes from a gamecube or so? I just want more from my entertainment system than just entertainment

    also a PC doesn't bind you so toughly to your vendor... you can buy hardware upgrades (additional hd-space, internet ability, new media drives) from almost any vendor - if you've got a console it has its own interface that other vendors just don't produce hardware for, so you have to buy from the creator of the device (MS, Sony, Nintendo) and their products are usually MUCH overpriced!

    Its strange how often I lately read from people predicting the end of something - does everyone have psychic powers nowadays?

    * apple predicts the end of the pc (although they recently started using an OS and a CPU that comes from PCs)
    * I've read predictions on the end of apple (on slashdot some month ago)
    * linux users predict the end of microsoft (for 14 years now)
    * microsoft predicts the end of linux (because they want to sue it off the market)
    * firefox users predict the end of the internet explorer (although it still has 85% market share)
    * Hollywood predicts the end of big-budget films (because of piracy, not because of the incredible prices they demand)
    * microsoft predicts the end of google
    * AMD and Intel predicted each others end
    * slashdotters predicted the end of sony because of the rootkit
    * Andy Tanenbaum predicts the end of monolithic kernels
    ...
    ...

    there is only one good game console: a PC
    I bought a PC 11 years ago and everyonce in a while I upgrade parts of it, so it ran the newest games again...

    what do you do if you have a game console? you buy complete new systems every 2-3 years and you can't do anything useful with it and don't even have a decent controller (you remember halo 1? they had to put hundreds of extra enemies in the pc version, because with the superior aiming device - the mouse - it was much too easy on pc)

    hey, the cameras in london are very useful... you remember the three bombst in london busses within one week?... well the news on tv got excellent video material of the exploding busses...

    thats the irony - they trade freedom for security and all they get for their freedom is better video footage about how insecure they are...

    I see employers reading apple users application saying "alright, this guy knows how to boot a preinstalled os, surf the web, write text and enjoy multimedia..... WELL I THINK I'll employ the other guy - the one that knows ASM,C,C++,Python,PHP,MySQL - the one that has often disassembled and reassembled his computer, installed windows and linux hundreds of times and set up dozens of networks"

    the world becomes more and more computerized, but as an apple user you are just a consumer - you just spectate how the world around you changes and you are unable to participate in this process, because you've played around with your toy while you should have learned how to participate

    imagine everyone would start using macs... noone ever does anything with the system anymore because its SOOO wonderfully easy. noone learns anything about how stuff works anymore (I mean come on... open source OS-X which is still designed specifically to not-work on non-apple hardware... thats worse than anything MS has ever done, OS-X comes with a built-in browser, mediaplayer etc too - where are the antitrust lawsuits there?) the result would be that in some years only apple would know how system internals work - leading to a world where apple can do anything they want, because the human iPod lemmings don't know what they're doing and if its right or wrong...

    my point is - use apple if you want a system that works out of the box, stable and fast... like a game-console... but if you want to learn anything about computers, OSses, programs, algorithms etc. you should shure as hell use a pc...

    what do they expect will happen when you can't access such websites FROM SCHOOLS AND LIBRARIES?

    the sexual predators sure as hell won't use those terminals for their hunting and I don't think that the victims (children) use those websites from public places like schools and libraries either... therefore this will protect nobody!

    this is just plain stupid vote-hunting... why don't you just close down every playplace? - oh wait! there have been cases where children were raped in their schools... lets close all schools - this would have another positive side effect:

    more stupid people = more people who beleive such idiotic plans would change anything = more votes
