  3. get the facts on Microsoft's IE7 Search Box Bugs Google · · Score: 1

I notice that in my version of Firefox the search box defaults to Google, and that the pulldown menu of pre-entered options doesn't even include MSN Search, but Google seems to have been oddly quiet on that front for the many years prior to IE7 that Firefox has made this feature available.

it would be new to me, that firefox was written by google
    it is this simple:
google: objectively best engine -> it's in firefox default setup
yahoo: popular engine -> it's in firefox default setup
msn: bad engine, unpopular, restrictive terms of use -> not in

you see, Firefox has about 10% market share, IE has 85% so making an engine the default in firefox does not have such an impact on the search engine market like it will have in IE7...
also IE users are mostly unexperienced PC users that don't want to be confronted with manually CHANGING the default search engine... so making MSN default in IE7 will reach more people - which also will mostly not be willing to change the default settings manually (especially since msn already LOOKS a lot like google...)

all together I come to the conclusion that ms does this with a purpose... they want to abuse their market share in the browser market to suppress their competitors in the search engine market...

    - DVD playback
    - mplayer, an mplayer GUI and mplayer-plugin for mozilla

have it in the stores everywhere one week before vista and for half the price of vista (at most) and put up big signs saying "big microsoft is watching you" and the usual statements "more secure", "tons of free open source software", "much lower priced" etc etc

if it was vice-versa it would be like this:

  9. dear MS - just think for once! on Windows Live Goes to College · · Score: 1

At the RWTH Aachen we get an email account on the email servers of the university - alright, the university has to pay money for the servers and maintainers... if a university doesn't want to pay that price, they just might store your personal email adress in their database to reach you, but THIS is ridiculous! forcing you to use a miserable service is just plain stupid... these universities must have gotten lots of money because noone would accept such a poor offer voluntarily

but seriously, MS, you don't need to get people at the age of 20-30 years... if you don't have them already at that age, you won't ever get them - especially not with a poor service that doesn't support POP/IMAP/forwarding...
the only thing you'll reach is pissing people off by forcing them into your narrow-minded "there is nothing in the world but MS" system

but of course as a GNU/Linux user, I'm the enemy - you won't listen to me, although you should, because I switched only few month ago, so I'm a person that still knows why he switched and doesn't hate you dogmatic... and this forcing students into using cheap crap (I say again: no pop/imap/forwarding, so these words are funded) is another reason for me to never use your products again, because it once again shows perfectly that you're evil...

    I don't think so...
but why do they force people to use these properitary software players? (I just say "you want fullscreen? that costs 30$" thank you, apple) first of all this does NOT prevent the trailers from being downloaded, but I guess thats what they think...
but what's the point in that? uh, people might have your trailers on their hard disks, they can watch them multiple times without stressing your servers and their bandwidth - they might show them to their friends and make them interested in your movies...

I can't even come up with a funny or ridiculous example of a reason for forbidding the trailer-download...

    BSplayer (video player)
    XVid (video codecs)
    Audiacity (audio editor)
    blender (3d-modelling and rendering software)
    VirtualDub (video editor)
    gimp (image editor)

    AdAware (malware remover)
    AVGfree (virus killer)
HijackThis (makes a list of your running applications - on http://www.hijackthis.de/ you can get a good analysis of the logfile) ZoneAlarm, SoftPerfect or SecurePoint (Firewalls)
