  1. Re:Deceptive advertising on School Software Licenses Under Review · · Score: 2, Interesting

I have to agree with you; I'm at uni at the mo so I've been in education for about the last 15 years, and with the exception of a crazily old BBC computer or whatever it was I've never seen anything but windows. When your younger I guess you don't tend to notice it as much but I really wish they'd at least given us some ability to use other systems. At uni I recently started a flame war(unintentionally) through my blog because I dared to suggest that our uni might use OO and Linux and other free software. Tellingly I got one reply (from a woman) who said that females don't know how to use computers as well as men so its unreasonable to expect them to learn... which is bullshit, but it gives you some idea of what your up against.

These are views which I saw replicated over and over, "it's too hard to learn" "I don't want to learn" "OMG!!!1 MS is teh best!!111!!!". In order to make any change you have to first get to these people, a ground up change.

I understand why you dislike mines so much (I do too) but I think your anger here is misplaced. Anti-tank mines are perfectly safe for humans to pick up and carry (or even jump on... my mum's husband was in the UK army for ages and during his training he had an instructer who took out one of these mines and jumped on it to prove this point) they pretty much don't kill people who aren't in tanks/cars etc.

I get the point about how they can kill people in tractors/cars after the war but if they only used these mines then they would be able to pick up the mines after a war and send them off safely to be decommisioned... so really the people are better off.

in all fairness to /. - what else could they do on an issue like this? They had to report on it or everyone would say "This site is crap, digg reports on stuff like this...". If they report on it you want them to put a link to a site where you can buy it. I remember when someone submitted a list of "spy gadgets" with no link to where you could buy it and people were up in arms. So it needs to be reported on and needs a link to where you can buy it... all gadgets will be reported on because thats why were here; to know first and be at the cutting edge of nerding

I actually like the idea of the e-reader and I think that this is a good step, but as is mentioned, it is just too expensive. For that money I could buy a pda and then view pda's on that... I might even be able to find a workable tablet pc on e-bay for that price. It also raises the question about how much the ebooks will actually cost for these; the ones I've seen have cost nearly as much as the hardback versions which is simply a rip off. paper will be my method of choice still, not only because of price, but at the moment it also seems easier to read/flick through.

It makes me wonder why the released this whilst the price is so high. I'd be amazed if they sold more than 1000

that was a bit silly telling people how little you paid for something when your profit was so high... although I have to wonder, would they really lose any sales if people knew how high their profit margin was? I lknow for a fact that in restruants you'll pay over 100% of the value of a bottle of wine, I'm sure other people know that too, but at that time it's the only wine you can get. Similarly with Apple; people want an iPod, for one you have to pay £200, so thats what you pay. I think some people might be slightly put off if they knew the profits were obscene but whereas you (sound like you) are a sole trader and therefore can be haggled with, they are not so won't... and I'm sure people will be aware that everyone else is making the same profits.

If a office suite was designed specifically for disabled people then it could freely use the open document format and get updates as soon as is required without having to wait for someone to hack the .doc... infact because it seems that opening any .doc in another program can be hit and miss it would make sense, from the point of view of disabled people to make the move to open standards and then when tools are created they can use them.

I can't imagine MS is being stoped from having open document in their programs... except MS themselves. So there needn't be any compatibility issues no matter what people are using, and disabled people will be just as well served even if MS does give the best options for disabled people (it's an "IF" but I can't really speak on which OS/office is best for this though)...

The interesting thing is my girlfriend also now uses linux pretty much full time... she is fairly indifferent about this; and she certainly won't put linux on her laptop. What is important though is now when I buy my next computer I will be able to get her to agree to have linux as the only OS on the computer and she is now in a possition to understand why it is better.

My children will use linux too, and I would hope their children will. When my mum buys her next computer she will use linux. If I give my Nanna and Grandad a computer (although they're from the generation who is deeply suspicious of computers so they might never get one...).

My point is that the cause isn't as lost as you think... all it took was one interested person who can explain clearly why free is better (me) and within 5 years my whole family could be 90%+ free. I hope that my children will take on this view and do the same with their family.
