    I was looking at that today and would like one... I don't know if you know the answer to this but it being /. I figured I might as well ask... does it work with linux (I'm on fedora core 5) and would it be able to access the net on my setup anyway because it is bound to one MAC address (I worked around this by changing my other pc's MAC address but don't know how to do it on a DS)... I don't suppose anyone has seen/solved either of these issues

    damn small linux will run great on your system - although it is technically a live CD... you could get something like fedora core 2 or 3 or something... i'm using 5 but I think that that might be a bit too much for that system... unless you want to run in runlevel 3. ; )

    could the banks not create a usb card reader which you could put your debit/credit card into as part of the authentication, or even better an "authentication" card, it could have say 5 billion numbers on it and the system could ask for 5 digits randomly out of all of them, if the box was set to never send more than 5 digits then even if you fell for a phishing attack or got hacked those numbers would almost never be asked for again. This seems like such a good idea... I feel I must be missing something.

    Observable situations can't ever be said to be "objective facts". This was Hume's problem with induction (and similarly the problem Hobbes had with the science of his time). It will never be an objective fact that all swans are white, because it is untrue, but if you had only ever seen white swans you might (erroneously) believe this to be the case... if you had seen millions of white swans you might feel pretty confident with it, but it would still be wrong.

    Similarly you can't ever say that wikipedia is a repository of objective facts, becuase there is no such thing... Although if I wasn't nit-picking I would say that you could always say that when the topic wasn't controversial it didn't contain information which we explicitly know to be false

    you make a good point, I would also add that (at least in the UK) when you buy with a credit card you are protected against fraud because your contract is not with the people you gave the credit card information to but with the credit company itself, so if goods don't turn up or a company goes under you can get your money back. Debit cards don't offer that protection... but I don't know how to pay credit cards so I guess I'll never get one.

    I wasn't too sure what GNUCash was from the summery and the article seems to have gone down, if you're wondering:

    GnuCash is an application to keep track of your finances. GnuCash is a personal finance manager. A check-book like register GUI allows you to enter and track bank accounts, stocks, income and even currency trades. The interface is designed to be simple and easy to use, but is backed with double-entry accounting principles to ensure balanced books.

    That's from yum, although 2.0.0 isn't in the fedora repositories yet (well, not; livna, core, extras or updates)

    hmm... you could play it that way, in my deck I prefered to take the small damage in the opening turns in order to get set up with the more powerful cards later... I had a sliver deck and when you got the sliver queen along with 4 of the muscle slivers, a flying one and the one that gives them rampage you really get going... you could lose even 10 points, even 15, give it a couple of turns with that kind of power and it'd all be over... I miss playing MTG (and star-trek cards too...) why must I be seemingly the only nerd at my uni?

    well, some people don't like wikipedia... you can write anything you want, and some people do, I prefer to trust that people can be sensible when trusted... "trusted people are trustworthy"

    well according to wikipedia there have been at least 6 fairly big tsunami's since the 60's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsunami). Although the boxing-day one was the biggest in recent memory thousands of lives could be saved in the next 50 years even if (which we hope) no other big tsunamis happen

    but what if the technically inferior format wins, because it is slightly cheeper, and you want to be able to use this so other people can watch and play what you have made, but you want to be able to back up 200GB of data... so that would be good

    "TDK recently announced that they have created a working Blu-ray disc capable of holding 200GB of data (six 33GB data layers)"... at the mo I've only seen HD-DVD at 45 GB (although I might just be out of the loop on that one)

    I hate to respond like marx did when he gave a speech on free trade here but I fear it is the only option... we should support DRM, make sure that it becomes as intrusive as possible, make sure that at every turn every legitimate use of people's own products becomes difficult and when something like the Sony Rootkit happens (which it will, again and again...) then we seize on it and show the world that this makes the situation worse for everyone.... Appart from the people who pirate things and have the encryption handily broken *shifty eyes*

    I guess that means we need to stop the EFF protesting for a little while.

    If you agree a price and they accept then they can't later alter this so I fail to see too many problems

    This might need looking at although I can't imagine too much which could go wrong, if the product isn't of a merchandisable quality then you can get your money back anyway (because of the statutory rights) - there are also rights to protect you from misleading advertising - if they fail to deliver then you can simply get your money back without too much trouble.

    No contract is worth anything if it is not in writing so I can't see how this is a problem

    You'd expect this anyway, if they refuse to help then cancel because it is within your cooling off period

    - this all seems like it could be solved fairly easily anyway... you can't sign away statutory rights so consumers are safe as far as I can see...

    I agree with you, it got about 5 front page /. stories in the first week too... which is pretty impressive. Also they seem to disagree with their own readers (who gave it an 8/10 score) and their decision has nothing to do with "tech"; they don't even mention the technology that is inside it... still, what do you expect when they say how bad that little phone is but the editors review gave it 6.6/10 and a "good" rating

    what is it with schools these days, when I went I got taught - hell I thought that was what a school was meant to do - now this seems like it comes second to investigating whether or not your a criminal... If this was me I'd be buying a PDA phone and encypting the data... then you get the fun of watching them try and decrypt it

    can I ask (and I'm not trolling; just not from the USA) is AT&T a government thing? they seem to be close to the NSA (is that a government thing...) but I don't get why a private company would be acting like this.

    about the EFF... I don't always agree with how they do things but I'm glad that at least some people are trying to raise awareness of these issues, people often just see them as something tha will never affect them, but these issues concern everyone (or should). Once freedoms have gone they are hard to get back, if people know maybe we can try some prevention rather than cure before the idea that you don't have a right to your own privacy becomes ingrained through-out the world.

    I'll accept that this is a half-arsed effort on MS's part, and that it in no way can be seen as a comittment to "open" or "free" software - but does this change the fact that now govts around the world can adopt open standards without any complaints from people who only use MS software or disabled people; which has to be a good thing

    because if you would sit and wait to download all the episodes it means that you at least like it to some extent... I would say that about 40-50% of the people who download all the episodes would have bought the dvds legally had they not have downloaded it. If you would not have done then fair enough... but if you watch it at least twice a week I would say chances are you would have paid up.

    I think this is how I aviod the false logic of how every download is a lost sale.

    one thing that I think was missed a little about the issue of piracy is simply that if we don't watch it on their channel or buy the DVDs then they just won't make it any more. The damn networks like to mess around with scheduals to the extent that they kill the shows; when this happens it falls on the more hard-core fans to buy the dvds and vote with our wallets to get it back. Piracy seems to harm that effort at least.

    Excellent point. All that I would add is that this is a good reason to switch to Linux. I use fedora. If some script-kiddie hacked it and then tried to brag about 99% of the people in the world would be like "whats linux?" "whats fedora?... isn't that a hat?" so it's pretty safe there.

    Secondly Fedora is about to become the OS of choice for thousands of third world children... people not known for having a credit card with a huge balance/credit. So it should be pretty safe their (there is no way of excluding them whilst including people like me... so it would waste a lot of their time)

    So ultimately you should use Linux (and fedora which is a jolly good distro... I don't know if security wise there any real difference between the distros though)
