please, please, please, please, please, please, please will someone reprint Computer Lib!!!! I remember hearing about it and Ted Nelson at college but his book is long out of print.
So if it was possible on single core machines from way back and an example still doesn't exis, is it actually any more of a threat now we are multi-core?
I'm sorry but posting this story on this site is just waving a red flag in front of a bull and waiting for it to go berserk. I know it's a slow news day but...
1) If it is a half decent piece of software then you won't need that much support. Then again I could put some bugs in just to drum up business.
2) As a developer I would rather be paid to write code than take phone calls from clueless customers.
3) I am sure the customer has better thing to do with their time than going through the code looking for my bugs.
I have returned to/. after Digging for a while. You do get consistently more 'interesting' stories than at the more social news sites. Thats what editors are for. I suspect/. didn't have quite as many iPhone stories as Digg and there is certainly less general crap. I also sometimes just read the summary and head streight to the comments. I think because of AC staus you do get more peole commenting here and generally they seeem to know more about what they are discussing.
All the service pack does is give you the first years worth of updates in one execuatble. Most Vista users have Auto Update turned on so they have it all already. It just means that anyone doing a fresh install can whack that on and save half an hours downloading.
While graphics have gotten better over the years AI has mysteriously gotten worse. It's not too bad if a silly little sprite is doing behaving stupidly but when you have a realistic looking guard/soldier/goblin and he stands there behaving unrealisticly then it stands out more. The more sophisticated the thing the unit represents, the more glaring its behavious will be.
Any companies out there specialising on game AI alone?
Why would M$ have paid anything towards it? It is not a maker of DVD players and its never been in that market. This is purely the hardware boys trying to get one over on the other.
Back in the 60s it was common for bands to release a couple of albums a year. Certainly the successful pop bands like the Beatles and Beach boys HAD to. The idea being that pop wouldn't be around that long so lets fleece the kids as much as possible. At least we get them once a year now except for a few artists *cough *Ryan Adams *cough. That at least gives em time to write some decent material.
Does it come with free earplugs or a soundproof cabinet to put it in? There is no way I am leaving that on in the corner of the room just it case I want to record something.
First we can wave goodbye to all those internet phone companies (vonage, etc). Next will be all the millions of video sharing sites. Then probably a coule of social networks or two.
My money is on the torrent trackers.
Don't blame me if the next time you decide to go and have a look round the record shops in town they have all disappeared. Clicking around iTunes will never be the same as looking round a store the same way listening to any post '75 Elton tunes will never be the same as listening to decent music.
I found it quite amusing that if you typed "Democracy" into Google then most of the results on the first page were software related. There were a couple of references to politics but not much. Show the state of the Interweb.
Things is, these days even if you write some efficient code its not necessarily what's going to be executed. The pre compiler is going to turn your lovely C++ into some C. Chances are the compiler is going to rearrange the instructions based on what sort of CPU architecture its expecting and whether its optimised or not. Secondly the CPU itself might jiggle things around. I see these skills are useful if you are writing drivers, etc, but how many of the programmers out there actually do that? Not many.
Don't kid yourself. All a 14 year copyright means is that cheap compilations will come around much quicker than before and the bands won't get a penny. Yeah, you will be able to pick up the greatest hits of the 60s, 70s and 80s for a couple of quid but you won't be helping the artists.
If anything you should have different levels for copyright for different areas. Art, music, film and software are all wildly different areas so why should they be goverened by the same rules?

But can you share it wirelessly?

I think they are missing a big C there somewhere. Just can't figure out where.

Checking something called an iRack onto a plane is just asking for a full cavity body search and possibly a nice orange jumpsuit.

We are all going to die!!!
Or how about Half Life 2 where the combine and other characters are actually the same size as you? That would be immersive.

MTV, get off the MTV get off my console!

Shame.

Oh, the irony. :)
It will probably encourage more people to join up now they have left.
