>>>Ever known anyone that got cancer? Those bills run into the hundreds of thousands.
Yes my friend. He died in his mid-50s and chose to accept his death rather than fight it. If I had been in his shoes, I would have done the same. It is far wiser to accept death, than to live in denial about the inevitable. No matter how rich you are, or how much "free" healthcare your government gives you, you will not live forever. It is pointless to try.
Interesting perspective. I wonder how far you actually take it. Surely if you get an infected wound, you treat it rather than "accept death." It sounds as if you are promoting "accepting death" solely for financial reasons.
FWIW, I know several people who got cancer, got treatement, and are now living healthy, normal lives. They are not going to live forever, but they have lived, and presumably will continue to live, for quite some time. Do you believe these people should have just "accepted death"?
While death may be inevitable, there is nothing inevitable about dying at a particular point in time, unless you choose to do nothing about it. If you are at the bottom of a pit, do you accept the inevitable and starve to death, rather than climb the rope that is being offered to you?
And who would the "proper authority" be in this case? His management doesn't care. That would be the point. There isn't a "proper authority" because the company isn't doing anything illegal. If, on the other hand, the company is doing something illegal, surely the "proper authority" would be fairly clear?
I'm not sure why everyone seems to be defending this guy and jumping on the "whistleblower" bandwagon. How can you expect to post sensitive security details about your company to an internet forum and not lose your job? Regardless of how dumb the company is, this employee isn't the brightest either if he expected -- and wanted -- to keep his job.
Police Major Lane Hagin says... "There's no problem with the robot going up and down the street or being visible or any of the other things it does -- with the exception of spraying water on people." Hagin adds, "Then, it becomes really freakin' cool no matter where it happens." Fixed.
So, if this trend continues, \. will get a C&D order for the "broken windows" icon for MS related stories. Oh no! And Backslashdot is my favorite news site, too!
The updates will fix visual bugs as well as plot holes. Unless the movie is produced by Microsoft, in which case every couple patches, one will cause a reasonably functioning movie to crash halfway halfway through watching it.

Yeah, and I'm sure the moon landing was faked, too.
In my experience, if you want your wife to stop bugging you about computer problems, buy her a Mac. What experience, exactly, do you have with his wife?

When Ethics and IT Collide

1. Someone looking at adult porn is not an "ethical problem", unless you got your ethics from the bible belt. Someone looking at adult porn on company computers is an "ethical problem."
2. Someone looking at kiddie porn isn't an "ethical problem" either - its a legal problem! Like in "against the law". Yes, indeed.
3. Not reporting it because you would have to admit you were snooping on other people - priceless AND retarded. He did report it. It says so in the summary that you quoted.
Whenever I move somewhere the first thing I do is call and get a new internet. It used to take about 6 weeks but now it only takes a couple of days. I'm living out here by the lake now so my internet got installed by some redneck but he did an okay job, my internet is fast enough.
You are obviously living in some backwoods part of the country. Most people I know these days have internets PLURAL. That's gotta be a lot faster. But damn, they do always all seem to go down at the same time.
He put his ship right next to the hanger doors creating as much as an airtight seal he could then he opened the door and all the air left his ship and filled the hanger area giving some pressure for him so his head doesn't explode but the air was rapidly thinning because it wasn't completly air tight so he only had a couple of seconds to get in.
Well, my head exploded trying to read that sentence.
It's interesting the parallels between reading that and being in space... can't hold your breath, don't survive very long, head explodes...
The situations are similar, sure. That doesn't make it a good analogy. A good analogy would not have the extraneous information. That is, you wouldn't need to say something like, "In that both defendants were making the same claim relative to their potential culpability for activity conducted using their property, i assert that it is a good analogy."
In essence, the reason this is a bad analogy is because you have to be careful to separate what you are talking about from the extra junk (i.e. all the other reasons Slashdot users think Vick's defense is lousy).
You are surmising that Slashdot users feel his defense based on ignorance is lousy, but your surmising doesn't appear to be based on anything, other than that the general population seems to think his defense is lousy.
Interestingly, the first DNA sample they plugged into this technology was Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's. They found out that his chromosomes, in fact, sound remarkably like the Spice Girls being played at 78 rpm. Strange but true.
VERY strange. I'm trying to imagine how one would begin fitting all the spice girls onto a turntable, let alone trying to play them...

Only when their nostrils collapse. Until then, they can still snort cocaine.
Cars tend to "break in" and get better MPG than when they are brand new, at least in my experience. The guy I bought my car from also told me this (though I don't know how much you should trust that.) This may have been part of the reason you saw such a marked jump.
I'm not saying there wasn't any benefit from driving better, but it probably wasn't as big a difference as the numbers seem to indicate.
you "found" documents years old... how, with a logical directory naming convention, did you "lose" them to begin with?!?
Directory structures can only organize along one key. Unless you are making symlinks/shortcuts to files and directories, in which case you are a doing a LOT of extra work that could easily be avoided by searching.
Why do you think Gmail works? It is based on the philosophy that it is easier to search a large group than to organize it along the way. (Of course, it IS being organized along the way, just not by the user.)
There's always some "L33T" dude on here that scoffs that ANYONE with ANY SENSE would EVER use myspace.
Yeah that's just nonsense. There's no call for others to scoff at people with ANY sense using Myspace. Only for others to scoff at people with a sense of AESTHETICS using Myspace.

Of course, to get it back you are going to need a disinterdeterminaterizer.
He said pour dirt into the radiator, not into your monitor and keyboard!
Terratec and M-Audio both make quality sound cards, and I much, much prefer those companies to Creative.
What's all this about vibrating membranes? I thought this was supposed to be about math!

Great idea, but it is 4w per CUBIC centimeter. You would need a cubic acre, not a square acre, to generate that amount of power...
Creating a fake MySpace profile is impersonation. Talking about how the principal sucks is not. (Nor is passing around naughty notes in class.)
This is a very big distinction.
