Just don't run the checksummer from the ballot machine. Store it as a read-only exe on a USB device, plug it in, run the checksummer on the ballot program. Tada. Oh.. couldn't it just be open source? I guess that idea only works on Slashdot and not in the real world.
The AC makes a good point. In this case, he may have been already frustated that he couldn't run Linux but he can't publicly blame his employer for it.
I personally have trust in Google for right now. As long as they don't violate that trust, I'll use them. If they do, I'll seek other alternatives. Google got its audience through word of mouth. They can also lose it through word of mouth.
It really disgusts me to see this for the "minmum computer requirements" for SERVE, the new online voting that the federal government has been developing:
Minimum Computer Requirements 1. a Windows-based computer (Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000, NT or XP)
2. a connection to the Internet (dial-up modem, cable, DSL, LAN, WAN, etc.)
3. one of the following Internet browsers:
- Microsoft Internet Explorer, version 5.5 and above
- Netscape Navigator, version 6.x and above
If you are using an older browser, you can download a new version at the Microsoft or Netscape websites:
- Internet Explorer: http://www.microsoft.com
- Netscape Navigator: http://www.netscape.com
At the Midwest ACM Reflections Projections Conference today, the keynote speaker mentioned that the government would be requiring ActiveX for one of the online voting systems. So not only do you have to be 18, you must run Internet Explorer on Windows too. I find this very frightening.
Check this site then click on "How to Participate" then "Minimum Computing Requirements." They're using some kind of POST form, so I can't link to them directly.
Almost any time I show someone I know what Firebird can do (or they see me always using it), almost always they keep it as their main browser. I know they stick with it because once in awhile they'll ask me "how do I do.." or "why does Firebird.." The 5,000 shortcuts that Firebird has built in are awesome. Everything from the very quick google searches to text searching within a page in one keystroke or less.
Though, usually they want it because of the popup blocker;)
Well, Google's Voice Search was surprisingly accurate when I tried it awhile back. It doesn't seem to be working now though. I heard somewhere they wanted to try the voice searches in cars. Hmm, it'd be nice to have this hooked up to my microphone.
Froogle is a new service from Google that makes it easy to find information about products for sale online. By focusing entirely on product search, Froogle applies the power of Google's search technology to a very specific task: locating stores that sell the item you want to find and pointing you directly to the place where you can make a purchase.
I've only tried it a few times awhile back, and it seems to work pretty well. Will this compete with A9?
I think people don't report it because of the longstanding belief that the authorities don't care. Hell, I can't even get ISPs to care, let alone law enforcement agencies. You tempt me to move to Arizona though;)
If your ISP won't switch over or you don't want to run your own nameserver.. there is a list of publicly available tier 2 servers that you can switch to that are offered by OpenNIC members.
Update - August 13, 2003 To receive any reimbursement under these settlements, you must have mailed or filed a claim on-line with the Settlement Administrator. The Court approved deadline for submitting a claim for reimbursement under the settlements has now passed. The Final Settlement Hearing was held on May 22, 2003, and the Settlement was approved on June 13, 2003. You can view the Judge's order by clicking here. An Order Regarding Claims was issued on July 2, 2003. To view the Order Regarding Claims, click here. The Final Judgment and Order was issued on July 9, 2003. To view the Final Judgment and Order, click here. Notices of appeal have been filed by persons whose objections to the Settlement were denied by the District Court. Counsel for the State Plaintiffs and Plaintiff Settlement Class are contesting those appeals. Until the appeals are resolved or denied, payments for valid claims and distribution of CDs under the Cy Pres Distribution Plan cannot go forward Please check this web site periodically for updates.
The next time you're driving 41 on a 40 mph road, change your direction, and head over to the nearest police station to turn yourself in. I'm sure they would really appreciate it.

Very true; the grandparent confused me.
Because it just may happen

Erm.. from the original post:
I put it in bzip2 format, which reduced it to 7.4mb from 11mb+ in gzip.
Yes, this is TEMPORARY.

Here it is
It's on limited bandwidth, so please post a mirror with more resources.
DAMN that's the fast, I'm getting ~2.02kB/s from my univ :(
Though, once I get it, I'll mirror it of course.
Here's the mirror.
Notes:
Not all of it is downloaded.
In the images gallery, the thumbnails aren't there yet. Most(?) of the full images are, so click on them anyway.
Enjoy.
Thinking along the same lines..

What about Froogle?

.. that won't happen and VeriSign gets sued into the ground by GoDaddy and other registrars.
I think it's similar to a warranty for something on a car. "30,000 miles or 3 years, whichever comes first" type of thing.

As another person mentioned this already, e-mailing them is a waste of time unless you're a corporation with extra cash.
How do you fix this problem? DON'T USE THE ICANN ROOT SERVERS. Easy as that.
Plug: OpenNIC (for ICANN users) and OpenNIC (for OpenNIC (and its peers) users)
Compared to Bush... not much
I think a lot of it is based on the cost of living of your area, especially if you live in the US.
Ah hah.

That explains it.
Better yet.. they settled
Ugh. This really does make me sick.
OTOH, the government could simply appropriate more money for it and take more of our money to pay for it.

Yes.. I even submitted a claim, but I have yet to receive my check. Anyone know the status on this?
It's only a partial mirror; the server is still trying to recover. But the mirror will try to get the rest of the pics.
