Don't make it a default - make "ask a questin" a default - just let me choose between the text and the GUI installer right at the beginning and I'll happily abandon the text interface, thanks.
If they accomplish the same thing so what if the GUI is slow and clumsy. A lot of people is only going to do it once. Why spend anytime learning just how to use the installer? I'd rather spend time learning something I'll do more than once.
"Zero learning curve, abysmal usability / speed" summarizes the behavior of most GUI. If I only have to do it one time the Zero learning curve is going to make up for the usability / speed and then some.
If you have leftover it simply means you cooked too much!
Sure this is a good idea, but it only uses the energy in the food - i.e. all the time you use to cook it, decoration etc. are still completely wasted efforts. I'm sure the battery would still work if you put the "raw materials" in it i.e. eggs, meat, vegetables, sugar, grain etc.
Cooking it then feeding it to a battery instead of eating it just makes no sense to me. Unless they make a battery with a sense of taste.
I do have backups. But having a reliable HDD really gives peace of mind, and would open up a lot of possibilities like putting it in an offroad vehecle.
For the power cable...ew...I believe anyone who value his/her data should at least get a UPS with a 10 minutes supply.
It can easily be the best $80 computer money I've ever spent.
Honestly - I do not feel the need of anything faster than the slowest 5400 RPM HDD for now - my PC has gobloads of RAM and I can make use 128MB-per-HDD as buffer. Easily.
What worries me is, the faster you spin, the more catastrophic a failure is.
What I DO care about, is reliability and shock resistance. If anyone sells a reliable HDD that would survive 5-inch drop and still operate with all my data intact, I'll buy it in a heartbeat.
Compared to my data, the HDD and the theoretical time that can be saved with higher speed worth REALLY little. Almost nothing.
I'm about to post I can run 60+ OS with emulators alone. Technically, it is not cheating, and more amazingly, OS run with emulators can be up SIMULTANEOUSLY.
But, what if they threaten to sue modchip makers out of existence at the same time they make these BIOS "updates"? I bet after several changes nobody will be around to make the modchips...
Well...it's from Kodak (who makes most of its $ from 35mm films) so what can I say - when we have 15 MP cameras they'll start to sell 35mm films that "would take a 30 MP digital to match"...
For most applications tho 8 MP would be a really close 35mm substitute.
Is there any introductory reads about all the different 802.11's? it seems that we now have a b c d e f g. What would happen when the letters are all used up?
Being a Blackberry user, I am with you that it is a lot more usable than the Palm - I let my Palm IIIx sit for longer than its 2 AAA would last and I lost all my data!!! (Thanks to Yahoo! they were uploaded. Phew!)
A downside to Blackberry tho, is that it does not have enough 3rd party programs to compete with Palm/WinCE's libraries.
IIRC the new Blackberry uses Java. It is the right direction - but still a good developer relation program would help a lot.
>just because the brakes are being automatically >engaged, doesn't mean the driver can't further >engage them
This is not the issue.
The real question is: when the system decides to automatically engage the brake, can the driver _override_ the decision and say "NO"? Applying the brakes at the wrong moment can kill too.
>Automated Distance Closure Braking System: >Basically, if something's coming close at >either sudden acceleration or high velocity, >the braking system will automatically engage.
and possibly kills you...if YOU are in control, are you going to brake? I'm not sure I'll do it all the time.
important decisions like this should be handled by the driver instead of the car.
This can at least save me an inverter if I want to put a PC in a car - just some DC/DC transformer would do. That's a BIG save in noise, heat and energy...
They think all linux users expect free stuffs. If we change that attitude, and don't whine about games not going open source, then we may have a chance.
What? You're using Debian on old 386's as routers? Good for you.
There is one thing you may like to know though. Even distros with kernel 2.0 can make really good and secure routers.
If you have old hardware, don't expect to run new software.
Why do you think we keep maintaining and making security fixes for old software?
Software that comes out in 2002 should not be held back by a CPU that came out in 1986. Let some 1998 software handle that.
What if I want to keep a non-functional installation of Scrollkeeper on my machine by replacing some of the stuffs it depends on?
With Slack it is easy.
Who needs dependency? I have ldd.
Also you'll know right away when the program complains.
Dependency checking just gets in the way when I *WANT* things to get temporarily screwy.

In this aspect, the BSD license is just stupid - if I were to rewrite the license I'd add the following clause:
Upon execution, derived work must prominently display that the code is derived from the BSD code, and must not be misunderstood as original work.
I think anybody who cares should use the zlib/libpng license instead of BSD.
Hey, you missed the greatest war of the continent: The War of 1812
They are wasted energy, but not wasted efforts because the chicken - seed - plant - sun chain occurs naturally and does not require any human effort.
You have to do something (i.e. cook) to waste the energy to make leftover food. Now that's wasted efforts.
If you have leftover it simply means you cooked too much!

Maybe it's a good time you invested a $70 CD writer...
My guess is, they WANT to shut it down, but they cannot, because they know their case will not stand.
Console makers know very well that a modchip whose only function is to defeat region scams^H^H^Hhemes is completely legal.
So somebody PLEASE make such chips. Lots of them. There ARE demands - and I love to see MS grinding their teeth and not able to do anything!

The same thing can't be said for "real" OS. LOL
I'm quite sure that video games can help me vent more "amount" of anxieties/anger/aggression than the trace amount that they can cause.
Your concern is no biggie for me.
You should all be thankful to the /. lameness filter that filters out empty posts otherwise you'll all be in violation!

We're closing on 35mm with about 8 MP....with about 20 MP we'll be in the 645 category. What's next?

This is so far the best library I have used for pthread programming. Powerful, easy to use, and encapsulates message passing really well...
You forgot the PANTS man, PANTS!!!
